Airwars assessment

An alleged Coalition airstrike on a house reportedly killed 15 civilians from one family on the night of December 11th, in Al-Kashma.

All sources said that the airstrike was conducted in Al-Kashma, except for Al-Shaafa Facebook page which reported that the event was in the adjacent village of Al-Shaafa.

Possibly explaining the confusion, Andolu News Agency reported that “sources pointed out that the bombing targeted the area of al-Kashma adjacent to the town of Al-Shafa, which is controlled by the terrorist organization Daesh.”

According to one source, an unknown number of people were injured.

According to a Radio Al Kul correspondent “The 15 dead were in one house, most of them children and women from one family, and a number of young people were not known whether they were civilians or fighters in the Daesh district”.

Qasioun said all of those killed were from one family.

In their monthly civilian casualty reports, the US-led Coalition has indicated that the credibility of this civilian harm allegation is in the process of being assessed.

The incident occured during the night.

Tuesday 11 December – a Reaper attacked three Daesh positions in and around Hajin, including a mortar team... Another Reaper continued to support the SDF on Tuesday 11 December; its crew identified a group of Daesh with small arms and rocket-propelled grenades, firing at the SDF, and engaged them with a Hellfire missile. The Reaper’s crew then observed another group of terrorists repositioning after a firefight with the SDF, and caught them in the open with a second Hellfire. Meanwhile, a coalition surveillance aircraft had identified a Daesh mortar team operating under cover of trees, and was able to direct the Reaper onto this target, which was successfully attacked with a GBU-12 guided bomb.

Local sources said that 15 people were killed and 38 wounded, including children and women, due to artillery shelling targeting Tayaran, Dawasa, Rajim Hadid, Ma’moun and Ma’ash Sooq neighborhoods in western Mosul.

While most sources did not say who was responsible for the artillery shelling, Yaqein and Niniva media center blamed the Iraqi government forces.

Niniva media center reported on Facebook that: “The population of the Ma’amon neihborhood, on the right side of the city of Mosul (south axis), [expresses] urgent cries of distress to rescue stranded civilians under the rubble of demolished houses as a result of military operations in the region against the terrorist organization Daesh.”

Different media and residents had told the center that: “There are a lot of civilians [who] have not been able to get out of their homes in Ma’amon neighborhood because of the intensification of armed confrontations between the Iraqi forces and the terrorist organization, pointing out that there are houses [which] have completely collapsed on their residents, and some of them are still alive under the rubble and could not parents and pulled them out.

And they followed [saying] that the local and central governments and international organizations should urgently intervene to save civilians from the rubble and evacuate the bodies of the martyrs.”

Airwars assessment

Between 8 and 15 civilians including one woman and one to two children died – and dozens more were injured – in airstrikes on a market in Ariha, according to multiple local sources. Reports are conflicted as to whether the attacks were carried out by Russia or the Assad regime, with one source saying that both parties were responsible.

In an initial report, Shaam News Network said the regime was to blame. It put the death toll at 12 with dozens more wounded. The Syrian Network for Human Rights also attributed the incident to the regime, although said seven died including a woman and a child.

However, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights – which published a video showing destruction on Ariha and 19 images – suspected Russian warplanes were responsible. It put the death toll at seven including two children and one woman.

A subsequent Syrian Observatory report put the death toll higher at eight, adding that it was likely to rise because 30 people were injured, some in critical condition. It also said that “some information reported 2 other casualties“.

In a later report, Shaam News Network appeared to change position and blame Moscow: “Russian aircraft raided on the city of Ariha causing the fall of 10 martyrs and several wounded after being targeted for market popular downtown.”

Orient News instead blamed the regime for shelling a market, and put the death toll at eight including one woman. According to Akhbar Alaan, “The Syria regime used a MiG-23 plane to carry out three air strikes on Ariha”. They said that “nearly ten” died, including women and children and 25 others were injured, some critically, adding that there had been widespread destruction and damage to the shops in the market.  Muslim2day put the death toll as high as 15 with up to 50 wounded.

Sin also said eight died – and that the regime was responsible – and put the number of wounded at 24. It named several victims, including a woman and a child who could not be identified.

SHRC – who blamed Russia – named an additional victim.

But according to Chamtime, both Russia and the regime were responsible: “nine were killed and tens were wounded in three raids by warplanes in Ariha. The first two were Russian and the third was regime.

Airwars assessment

Between eight and 15 civilians, including women and children, were killed and between 20 and 25 civilians were wounded in airstrikes launched against the town of Kafr Naha in western Aleppo. Local sources were conflicted as to who was responsible for the airstrikes.

According to Mohammed Haj Hussein, a local media and civil defence correspondent, airstrikes were launched by Russian and Syrian regime aircraft during afternoon prayers, targeting both a mosque and civilian housing.

While Step News identified Russian and Syrian regime aircraft as launching attacks across the countryside of Aleppo, the majority of other sources, including HNN and the Local Coordinated Committee of Syria blamed Russian planes for being specifically responsible for the attacks on Kafr Naha.

Many of the civilians affected by the airstrikes were from the same family and most were women and children. An image posted by @TRTalarabiya showed a young child covered in blood from injuries sustained by the airstrikes.

According to Shaam Network, the bombs used in the airstrikes were highly explosive rockets that resulted in heavy casualties and damage.

Videos posted by Thiqa Agency and Alboazezi show the moment that the rocket was launched into the town and the destruction in the aftermath, including bodies of civilians laying in the streets. Immediately following, the civil defence teams went to the scene to rescue the injured from the rubble.

Many of those injured were reportedly in critical condition, which was made worse by the continued shelling and the difficulty in finding a nearby hospital.

The local time of the incident is unknown.
