Airwars assessment

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights confirmed the occurrence of civilian casualties as a result of the Turkish artillery shelling targeting areas in the Sheikh Hadid area in the western countryside of Afrin. The Observatory later put the number killed in Sheikh Hadid at three.

According to local media, three civilians were killed followed an alleged Turkish airstrike on Nubl town.

According to Enabbaladi, the Syrian regime’s media published a statement saying that Turkish planes’ targeted allied positions in Nabal and Zahra, which resulted in a number of civilian martyrs.

An image published shows the casualties to be young men.

Only one other source reported that civilians had been killed. Endi Zentarmi said: “After bombing a checkpoint in the Ziyarah area and killing eight pro-regime fighters, Turk jets have now also bombed the regime-controlled town of Nubl (south-east of Afrin city), killing at least three civilians. The airstrikes are deemed deliberate.”

Three unnamed civilian males were reported killed in a Turkish (or less likely Coalition) action at al Bab. The Coalition later denied responsibility.

According to Step News, “Turkish planes targeted al Bab, east of Aleppo, with three raids and there are news about casualties.” VDC later reported three unidentfied male civilian deaths – though said these were a result of actions by “International Coalition forces.”

In an emailed response to a report submitted by Airwars on this and other incidents in December 2016, Coalition officials said the event was presently assessed as ‘Not credible’ with “no Coalition strikes conducted in the geographical area of the reported civilian casualties.”

Two named children died in either Turkish or Coalition airstrikes on Tadef.
According to the Syrian Network “The children So’ad and Jonaid Fares Al Ali died after International Coalition warplanes missiles fired on Tadef town in Aleppo governorate eastern suburbs.”

However according to al Bab News, “Turkish planes launched three raids at dawn today killing two from the family of Faress al Ali who is from the rescue teams in al Bab. His daughter Souad al Ali, 15 years old and his son Juneid Al Ali, 9 years old and he [the father] was injured. Several buildings were totally destroyed.”

Al Bab 24 noted on the same day “a violent air and artillery bombardment from the Russian and Nusairi [sectarian term refering to Alawites] and Turkish [armies] in coordination targeting al Bab, Tadef, Baza’a and several village nearby al Bab hit with no casualties recorded thank God.”

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights also blamed Turkey, but put the death count at three, reporting that “three from the same family including a woman with her grand daughter and son died in the town of Tadif near al-Bab city”.

Local media reported that between one and three civilians died and three more were wounded in an alleged Turkish shelling of Mirkan village, Syria.

Multiple sources named Juan Mohammed Omar as killed.

Sources added that three other civilians were wounded. Rumaf named one of these as Fahima Ahmed, 39, who sustained an injury “with shrapnel in the left foot”.

Villages told Afrin, heart of the news, that “six shells fell on the village and its surroundings”.

According to Abdinx1x, one of two civilians wounded was a woman with special needs.

One source, Karam Youssef , said that three civilians died.

Three civilians including an elderly woman died and 24 others including children and women were wounded in an alleged Turkish shelling of a bus in the village of Barbaneh, Syria.

Sources said that victims were wounded by artillery shrapnel and transferred to Afrin hospital.

Reports said that three victims later died. They were named as Amina Mohammed Mustafa (an 80-year-old woman), Abdel Rahman Khalil, 43-years-old, and Nouri Juma.

According to The War Media of the SDF, “On the morning of 5 March 2018, Turkish aircraft targeted an internal transport vehicle on the road leading to the Rajo area (the village of Barbaneh), injuring 22 civilians, including four children and more than 15 women.”

Afrin Media Center reported that “Three sisters Alia 12, Nerouz 35, and Nazifa Mustafa 19 years old were injured on March 2 after a bus carrying their family was bombed by #Olive_Branch forces, killing their elderly grandmother and another girl and injuring 18 others”.

Rumaf added some more details on the injuries of the sisters. It said: “As a result of the injury, the three sisters lost the ability to see relatively well, especially 12-year-old Alia Mustafa, who lost her right eye and Nerouz, who has a broken lens in the eye. Nazifa has deformity in retinas”.

In an undated event prior to January 26th, the Manbij Military Council reported that, “in the province al Jazira, Turkey used tanks, guns and mortars to shell residential neighborhoods, where nine different shells were documented, resulting in the death of three civilians and one injury.”

No additional details are presently known.

Airwars assessment

As many as three civilians – including two woman and a man – were killed, and six others were wounded in an alleged Trukish airstrike on Heikja village, according to local media. One source claimed that an unspecific number of children were also killed.

The two female victims were named as two women. The Kurdish Red Crescent named the third victim as male. One source alleged that some of the victims and the wounded were from the same family.

However, a report by Syria News said that a Turkish bombing targeting the city of Afrin and the village of Hijka of the region of Gondrissa, resulted in the deaths of children.

Sources have reported on damage to homes and agricultural lands.

Please note many of the images are tangled with incident TS191, Afrin City. It is difficult to determine which images correspond with which event.
