Airwars assessment

In a Coalition targeted strike, three men were killed when a car was destroyed at Al Atarib on the road between Sarmada and Bab Al-Hawa.

The Coalition originally reported destroying a car at Aleppo on October 15th-16th 2015. This was later amended to a US unilateral action, a targeted killing which the Pentagon said had killed Abdul Mohsen Adballah Ibrahim al Charekh, aka Sanafi al-Nasr (pictured right), described as “a Saudi national and the highest ranking leader of the network of veteran al-Qaeda operatives sometimes called the ‘Khorasan Group’… Al-Nasr is the fifth senior Khorasan Group leader killed in the last four months.”

VDC originally reported three unidentifed males inside the vehicles as civilians. However all three were later admitted by al-Nusra to be combatants, with the others named as Abu Yasser Al Maghrabi and Yassin Al Muhajir, local Aleppo leaders of the group.

Airwars assessment

On the second day of the offensive to recapture Mosul, Coalition strikes reportedly damaged a medical center in the south of the city leaving several dead, including at least three children.

Al Rafidain Network for Human Rights reported that “American” bombings targeted a health center in Hamam al-Alil, south of Mosul. Ahmed Mashal posted that an “American bombing raid” hit the center, leaving a number of “civilian casualties, including children.”

A graphic video posted on social media, appearing to originate from an ISIL-controlled outlet, showed at least three children dead wrapped in blankets. What appear to be portions of the medical center are reduced to rubble.

Given reported British actions in the area that day, Airwars flagged the incident to the UK’s MoD which said ” we can confirm that there was no UK involvement” in the event. However given that RAF strikes were reported south east of Mosul, Airwars has requested further clarification.

Local sources said that three named civilians from the same family were killed after a Coalition airstrike targeted a sniper on the roof of their house in Yarmouk neighborhood, West Mosul.

MNN and Urgent Mosul News said that Sheikh Mohammed Fathi al-Hussein al-Rashdi and his wife and his son’s wife were among the victims. According to sources, the bodies were still under the rubble. Both said the Coalition was responsible.

The other sources did report civilian casualties in the neighbourhood, but did not say who carried out the shelling.

Two local sources reported that an entire family was killed and another family was severely injured as a result of airstrikes on their houses in Najjar neighborhood, in West Mosul.

Iraqyoon Agency reported that the entire family of Nashwan Salem was killed in airstrikes that hit their house near Saada area, in Najjar neighborhood. It is unclear what the exact death toll is.

Sawlf Ateka (local Facebook group) launched an appeal to help the family of Osama Anis. Their house “behind the Bahaa al-Din Mosque” was hit by airstrikes, and the family is in danger. They were pulled from the rubble, but are “seriously injured and are currently in a house in Khuz Bakr behind Baha al-Din Mosque.”

For June 14th-20th, 19 strikes were made by French aircraft in Iraq and Syria. Most of them were carried out during the Battle of Mosul, in support of the Iraqi fighters engaged in the fighting to drive ISIL out of its positions in the North of the Medina. The other strikes were carried out in support of the fighting for the capture of Raqqah, and against flows of arms and fighters in Iraq and Syria

Saturday 17 June – Tornados and Typhoons struck a Daesh-held building in Raqqa and six terrorist targets in Mosul…On Saturday 17 June, Tornados and Typhoons suppressed a Daesh position in Raqqa, and struck six more positions in Mosul, again using a Brimstone and Paveway IV mix to deal with snipers and a machine-gun team.

Three civilian brothers were killed in alleged Coalition airstrikes on the Dar’iya neighbourhood of Raqqa, local sources reported. Initially, the strike was reported to have taken place in the Al Badou neighbourhood, but Q_Alenzy corrected this the following day: “Martyrs of the family “Al-Ward” who were martyred by an air strike of the coalition before yesterday in the neighbourhood of Dar’iya and not in the Badou neighbourhood.”

Other sources who reported the deaths alleged that the Coalition was responsible.

Amnesty and Airwars’s joint April 2019 report War in Raqqa: “Rhetoric versus Reality” also reported, based on field research, that an alleged coalition artillery strike had killed the three brothers.

Amnesty’s researchers gained a testimony from the fourth brother, Abbud, who was quoted saying “My three brothers were killed; why? There is no reason; the shelling was random.”

In April 2019 the Coalition announced that it had classed this allegation of civilian harm as non-credible, noting: “After review of all available strike records it was determined that more likely than not civilian casualties did not occur as a result of a Coalition strike.”

Two Royal Air Force Reaper remotely piloted aircraft conducted armed reconnaissance over Raqqa on Monday 3 July. One assisted Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) who had come under attack from a heavy machine-gun on the top floor of a building. A Hellfire missile through the building’s roof silenced the terrorist fire. The second Reaper used two Hellfires in a successful attack on a Daesh headquarters for foreign fighters. A mixed Tornado and Typhoon pair were also active over the city. The SDF, advancing into the centre of Raqqa, encountered a strongly defended building.
