Airwars assessment

A child was killed and two or more civilians injured in an alleged Coalition strike on the village of al Jafil (or less likely al Hakal.)

According to Shaam News “One child was martyred and others wounded when the same planes [as the previous event] bombed the village of al Hakal in the western countryside of the city.”

Amawi News reported that “a child is martyred and four people injured following Coalition raids on the village of al Jakal in the western countryside of Manbij.”

In the second of their March 2020 civilian casualty reports, the US-led Coalition assessed reports that they were responsible for civilian harm in this strike as “non-credible”, stating that no Coalition actions were conducted in the geographical area at that time.

Six civilians were reported killed in the village of Tal Housan, in what Halab Today said was “a result of Coalition aerial bombing and the artillery of democratic forces; and the bombing by Daesh of a car on the outskirts of the village.”

Fierce clashes between ISIL and US proxies the SDF were reported in the vicinity that day. As Lens Young Manbij noted: “People from inside the village have told us that the village has witnessed very violent clashes between the Islamic State and SDF forces, and the village has been under the control of the IS since last night. Its residents have left towards the city of Manbij and Abu Qalqal, and today Monday afternoon warplanes are targeting the village and IS positions with several raids in an attempt to regain control of the village.”

In the second of their September 2020 civilian casualty reports, the US-led Coalition assessed reports that they were responsible for civilian harm in this strike as “non-credible”, stating that no Coalition actions were conducted in the geographical area at that time.

Local sources reported that between 1 and 2 people were killed and possibly one other person injured in Tal al-Jayer when Coalition jets bombed a school and adjacent house.

In an apparent reference to the incident, the Coalition noted on December 1st 2016 that “three reports received in October are still being assessed” including “Oct. 6, 2016, near As Shaddadi, Syria.”

A local activist, Siraj al Hasskawi, posted on Facebook that “international coalition aircraft raides this afternoon the village of Tel Jayer… they targeted Tal Jayer secondary school, which led to the death of the young man Nawwaf Saad Muslah al Fadel, 28 years old, married and a father of a boy and girl.” He was identified as a civilian. Some local sources alleged that members of ISIL were holed up inside the school, but others reported that they were not present.

According to a local media activist cited by ARA News, the victim was identified as Nawaf al Muslih. Syria News Desk put the death at two civilians, and said one other was wounded.

A Coalition statement issued January 2nd 2017 noted: “Oct. 6, 2016, near al Shaddadi, Syria: After a review of available information and strike video it was assessed that no civilians were harmed in this strike.”

Given reported British actions in the area that day, Airwars flagged the incident to the UK’s MoD which said ” we can confirm that there was no UK involvement” in the event. However given the limited information given by the MoD on its strikes in Syria that day, Airwars has requested further clarification.

Airwars assessment

A local source told Airwars’ Iraq-based field researcher that three families have died in the village of Abu Jarbuha, followed Coalition airstrikes allegedly destroyed their homes.

With British airstrikes confirmed in the area that day, Airwars reached out to the MoD, with information which included geolocates within 1km of the likely vicinity of the event (36.41241, 43.31882.)

An MoD official subsequently told Airwars that “From the evidence you have provided… we cannot make any definitive assessment. However, I can confirm that there was no indication of any civilian casualties in our own detailed assessments of the impact of each of our strikes on the dates in question.

A UN report on the protection of civilians in context of Nineveh operations and the retaking of Mosul stated: ‘On 24 October 2016, an airstrike reportedly hit a house in Abu-Jarbu’a village in Bashiqa subdistrict of Mosul killing six civilians–two children, two women and two men–from two families and also wounding four civilians–two children, one woman and a man.

Dozens of civilians were killed or wounded in Tal Afar due to airstrikes and shelling, according to many local sources.

Yaqein reported that scores of unarmed civilians were killed by Coalition strikes as well as selling by government-aligned militias. A source told Yaqein that Tal Afar hospital is currently teeming with dozens of people injured due to indiscriminate shelling of the [Coalition] alliance and militia.

Several other outlets, including News of Iraq, reported both airstrikes as well as shelling from Popular Mobilization units.

Al Jazeera said that dozens of civilians were killed or wounded, but also reported that the Iraqi Defense Ministry said that the Iraqi Air Force was involved in bombing raids.

Fursan al Malhama noted fighting in the area involving government-aligned militias and claimed that 15 militia members had been killed.

Up to eighteen people were killed and 24 injured – mostly women and children – in government and Coalition airstrikes, in Al Qaim, Anbar province.

Yaqein reported the incident and added – quoting local sources – that “the raids focused on the areas of Karabila and Saada east of the city, and resulted in the complete destruction of four houses and damaged the homes and property of civilians.” Yaqein furthermore said that “it is noteworthy that the cities of Anbar province are exposed daily to a retaliatory bombing by government and international [forces] causing the killing of many innocent civilians and the destruction of their homes.”

News of Iraq (Facebook) also noted the incident and blamed the Coalition for the raids. Euphrates Post put the death toll at 18, but did not say who was responsible. Iraqi Spring Media Center said that 17 people were killed, including two children and 3 women (in a first report mentioned as “injured”), and 24 others were wounded, mostly women and children.

Raedlay posted a video of the effects, which was later deleted, of what was reported as “US bombing on the town of Karabilah”.
