Airwars assessment

One civilian was seriously injured in an alleged Israeli airstrike on a house in the Al-Karama neighborhood in northern Gaza, on May 18 th 2021, according to local reports.

Ihab Dawahidi, 35, Director of Medical Laboratories at the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), was struck in the head by shrapnel that fractured his skull and critically damaged his brain, said the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights.

Jihad, Ihab’s brother, told Haaretz: “Midday on Tuesday, May 18, the Israeli army called the neighbors and informed them that their house was going to be bombarded and that they should leave. My family knew nothing. A few minutes later the army called again, this time phoning the neighbors from another house: ‘We see the Dawahidi family is still in their house. Tell them to leave because [we’re] about to bomb.’”

The neighbors notified the Dawahidi family, “we all immediately ran out of the house,” Raghda, Ihab’s wife, told Haaretz. Upon hearing of the impending strike, Ihab rushed home and he and his brothers watched the bombardment, reported Haaretz.

A drone reportedly fired a warning shot at the roof of a neighbor’s house and residents concluded one of the inhabitants may have been a member of a Palestinian militant group, reported Haaretz. At approximately 1:30 P.M., the house was struck by a second missile, said the source.

The Palestinian Centre for Human Rights reported that the strike hit a house belonging to the Saleh family.

“About 400 meters from the house, Ihab took cover among a few trees, but the shrapnel got him right there,” Jihad told Haaretz. “His brain was outside” Jihad continued “one of our brothers, Ahmed, who was next to him, instinctively covered the wound and the opening in Ihab’s head with his hand, put pressure on it and called an ambulance.” “On the way to the hospital in our friend’s car, Ihab’s heart stopped. His eyes rolled back in his head. Amjad (another of Ibah’s brothers) started mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. On the way, they met the ambulance that Amjad had called and its team continued the resuscitation”, Jihad told Haaretz. “They said Ihab was a shahid [martyr]. My brother argued and insisted it wasn’t so, and they finally operated on him; he was in an induced coma for 72 hours. They found a blood clot in his brain, and he was taken in for another operation.”

Mr. Dawahidi spent time on a ventilator in the intensive care unit of Al-Shifa Hospital before being transferred to Al-Makassed Hospital in Jerusalem via the Erez crossing, reported The Palestinian Centre for Human Rights. Haaretz said that an initial request for Mr. Dawahidi to be accompanied by his brother and his uncle was denied, “my permit came late Wednesday evening, and the next day, May 28, we left”, Jihad told Haaretz.

The Palestinian Centre for Human Rights accused Israeli authorities of procrastination, which they say, led to a serious deterioration in Mr. Dawahidi’s health. At the Erez crossing, Mr. Dawahidi’s body was checked over with a magnetic wand by an Israeli security officer before being granted access, reported Haaretz.

In an article published June 7 th 2021, Haaretz said Mr. Dawahidi had yet to regain feeling in the left side of his body and was communicating with family members by moving the fingers on his right hand.

The incident occured at approximately 1:30 pm local time.

The victims were named as:

Ihab Dawahidi إيهاب الدواهيدي

Airwars assessment

A young girl between 9 and 12 years old, Dima Saad Asaliya, was reportedly killed in an alleged Israeli missile strike on Al Sikka street in Shasha neighbourhood of Gaza on May 19 2021. Another five other civilians were also reportedly injured in the attack.

Dima Asaliya’s father, Sa’ad Asaliya, a taxi driver in northern Gaza, posted an image of his daughter on Facebook after the incident. He told local sources that he had seen the missile hit the area from where he was standing on the roof of his building. He called an ambulance immediately, and only discovered the body of his daughter after the dust had cleared. Mr. Asalyia commented to Wafa news outlet: “What did my child do to make a missile turn her into pieces? Didn’t the occupying country, which possesses the technology, recognize that she is a child?”.

B’Tselem also collected testimony from Dima’s father: On Wednesday, 19 May 2021, at around 8:00 P.M., my daughter Dima, 10, went to her sister Irina’s, 26, to get a baking pot. My wife was making pita bread and needed the pot. Irina’s house is 50 meters away from ours. I was standing on the roof and saw Dima coming back with the pot. Just then, there was a loud explosion behind our house. I thought the missile had hit farmland about 20 meters away. There was a huge ball of dust and fire, and the force of the blast knocked me down. I didn’t think for a moment that the plane had struck my little girl. I immediately called the Civil Defense services and told them there’d been a bombing by my house and there might be people wounded or dead. I looked out at the main street to give them instructions where to go to, and then I saw a body lying on the ground. I still didn’t understand who it was. I told the ambulance driver that there was a body down below and asked him to wait a moment so I could climb down from the roof and check who it was. I went down and walked towards the body. Then I found it was my daughter Dima. I saw her lying dead, motionless. Meanwhile, my brothers and neighbors arrived, but I got to her first. I was in shock. I stood there and didn’t know what to do. I picked her up, but still didn’t know what to do. My brother Sa’id took her, put her in my brother Fathi’s car and drove her to hospital. After he drove off, I went inside to evacuate my family, because I was afraid there would be another bombing. Meanwhile, the ambulance arrived, but there were no more dead or wounded so he drove away. My brother Sa’id called me from the Indonesian Hospital in northern Gaza and told me that Dima had arrived at the hospital lifeless and that she was dead. I started crying and screaming and reciting verses from the Quran. Why did they hit Dima? She was just a young girl holding a pot. It’s a horrifying crime against an innocent girl. Dima was my life and the flower of the house. She was the youngest. My home has become dark. Every child who comes into the house reminds me of Dima. Everyone loved her, family, neighbors, friends.”

Andalou Agency reported on the event after interviewing Dima’s father: “The little girl, “Dima Asaliya”, took a short way to her married sister’s house, to borrow a small electric oven, which her mother requested, so that she could cook bread before the power cut. The 11-year-old girl, Dima, went on her way to her sister’s house, which is only 50 meters away from her house, and in the middle is an empty plot of land. It was only moments until the Israeli fighters launched a missile at the empty plot of land, leaving it stained with blood.”

In her home, east of Jabalia refugee camp, in the northern Gaza Strip, a tent of sadness covered the sky, where everyone was shocked by the horror of what had happened.”

Sa’ad Asalyia described his daughter to Andalou Agency as the “angel of the house”. Speaking to the New York Times, Asalyia wondered if Israeli soldiers mistook the electric oven Dima was carrying for a weapon: “Maybe their alarms went off because of the stove… but did they not see how small she was?”.

According to a tweet from @same76335451, the victims of the strikes were taken to the Indonesian Hospital for treatment.

Sources described the weapon used as a missile launched from a weaponised Israeli reconnaissance drone. The incident took place the day before a ceasefire was agreed.

The incident occured at 20:05:00 local time.

The victims were named as:

10 years old female killed

A 63-year-old farmer, Hajj Hasan Sami Borno, was reported to have been killed either in Israeli artillery shelling or as a result of a gunshot wound to the chest in the village Juhr Al Dik, southeast of Gaza city, on May 19 2021.

Some sources reported that Borno was killed as a result of warplanes bombing the village. Israeli thinktank the Meir Amit Intelligence and Terrorism Information Centre reported that Borno was killed by “IDF fire”.

Sources note that he was farming his land when the reported shelling occurred. A statement published by the Workers’ Council said: “It is a sad day for the families of the farmer worker, and for the hardworking workers, on which we mourn with great pain a martyr for a living, may God have mercy on him and inspire his family patience and solace.”

Borno’s daughter, Nada H Borno, posted on Facebook after her father’s death: “With more pride and honour, I mourn my father, the sweetness of my eyes, my beloved, and the joy of my heart”. His niece, Heba Salah, posted an image of a crowded funeral on Facebook, stating: “You saw the place of the martyr, God suffices us and He is the best agent. The meeting is heaven, God willing, my beloved uncle and my second father”.

Airwars assessment

On May 20th, 2021, one woman was killed and up to ten civilians, including up to four children and two women, were injured as a result of an airstrike on the al-Sitar al-Gharbi neighborhood in Khan Yunis.

Israeli warplanes fired a missile at 5:10am at the al-Khawaldah family home. The Palestintian Center for Human Rights reported that seven were injured in the al-Kawaldah family home, including two women and two children in the al-Kawaldah family. One of the injured had to have his leg amputated. The strike also damaged the home of the neighboring al-Khozondar family, killing 32 year old Huda Salah Rabi’a al-Khozondar and injuring her husand, Na’elah Rabi’a al-Khuzondar, and her two year old daughter, Malak al-Khozondar.

Multiple sources confirmed the death of Huda, but differed on the injury count, with some reporting four and others reporting up to ten. The Herald reported “Weam Fares, a spokesman for a nearby hospital, confirmed her death and said at least 10 people were wounded in strikes overnight.”

The injured were taken to Nasser Governmental Hospital, according to Safa News.

Between two to four children were reported injured as a result of the strikes, with the Palestinian Center for Human Rights reporting three children were injured, and @KightRises_ on Twitter reporting four children were injured.

Al Araby News said that the strikes occurred without warning and attributed them to Israeli warplanes.
