Airwars assessment

Up to nine civilians, including a woman and one or more children, were killed in overnight bombing in Mosul according to local reports.

Al Rafidain Network for Human Rights reported a bombing “killed or wounded innocent civilians, including women and children.” Al Hathalyoum placed the death toll at eight: “A security source and local residents from inside Mosul said international coalition forces targeted in an airstrike Alqosjat and the Arab region, in the north of Mosul – killing at least eight civilians, including a woman and two children.“

Iraqi Spring Meda Centre put the death toll at nine, and said the dead woman’s husband was also injured in the attack on the Shifa’ and Asatetha neighbourhoods.

Given reported British actions in the area that day, Airwars flagged the incident to the UK’s MoD which said “we can confirm that there was no UK involvement” in the event.

Airwars assessment

Nearly 100 civilians were killed or wounded in Mosul due to airstrikes and artillery bombardment, according to a local source.

Iraqi Spring Media Center reported the deaths of 98 civilians in Mosul during the preceding 48 hours due to aerial and artillery bombardment targeting residential areas.

In an emailed response to a report submitted by Airwars on this and other incidents in December 2016, the Coalition officials said the event was presently assessed as Not credible.

Local sources said that more than 30 civilians were killed or injured by an air or drone strike on a funeral in al Shifa, and in other neighborhoods west of Mosul.

Iraqyoon quoted witnesses saying that “aircraft had bombed a funeral for the Sangaree family in Shifa neighborhood, at the right side of Mosul”. People had reportedly gathered there to mourn the death of retired Colonel Aziz Ahmad Aziz Sangaree, who passed away a few days before, according to MNN.

Iraqyoon said witnesses had reported that “the bombing killed eight civilians and wounded 22 others”. They furthermore said that “the dead included three of Sangaree family, namely: Maan Ahmed Aziz Sangaree and Mishal Aziz Ahmed Sangaree and lawyer Ammar Mohammed Sangaree and five of the mourners.” Iraqyoon said that it was unclear whether the warplanes were from the Coalition or the Iraqi Army.

According to the Iraqi Spring Media Center, eight people had died at the funeral due to a drone strike.

Sheikh Mamdouh Duwaish Al Jarba was also named as one of the deadly victims of the raids on the funeral, according to Ahmed Al Jarba (Facebook), who said American planes were responsible. Likewise, Colonel Talib Aziz Alnemr was reported killed while attending the funeral, according to Iraqyoon.

Raedlay posted a very graphic video showing dead bodies as well as a witness collecting body parts. It said these were the result of Coalition airstrikes on different Mosul districts. In another post, Raedlay spoke of “21 dead and 11 wounded, including women and children” Coalition raids on several neighborhoods in Mosul.

CJTFOIR reported on March 4th that “Jan. 17, 2017 near Mosul, Iraq, via social media report: After a review of available information and/or strike video it was assessed that no Coalition strikes were conducted in this geographic area that correspond to the report of civilian casualties.” Officials confirmed to Airwars that this was a reference to the al-Shifa allegations.

In an incident not previously tracked by Airwars, the Coalition later confirmed the injuries of two civilians in an event near Mosul.

Their July 2017 civilian casualty report noted: “During a strike on an ISIS headquarters building, after reviewing post-strike video, it was assessed that two civilians were unintentionally injured.”

The Coalition provided Airwars with the location for this incident, accurate to within a one metre box. The location given placed the event near the Omar al Taleb mosque.

Local sources said that up to 80 civilians were killed or injured after Coalition or Iraqi airstrikes targeted the Omar mosque area in al-Faruq neighborhood in western Mosul.

The mosque was used as a shelter by displaced families, according to the Niniva Media Center.

Reuters cited three local witnesses, noting that “The Omar al-Aswad mosque, in the al-Faruq district of the old city center, was hit by an airstrike, three residents in the same area told Reuters by phone. Neighboring houses were damaged or collapsed because of the blast, they said without giving a precise estimate of the casualties as their moves are restricted by the militants.”

Urgent Mosul news reported that “this morning warplanes targeted Omar Black Mosque in al-Faruq area on the right side [with] several missiles, which led to the death of more than 50 civilians and the destruction of homes adjacent to the mosque.

Residents had also reported this to Reuters, said Mosul MNN. “They added that the neighboring houses were damaged or collapsed because of the blast, without giving precise estimates of the number of dead and injured because the regulation restricts their movements. A spokesman for the Coalition led by the United States said he did not know that an attack targeted a mosque. For his part, the Iraqi military officer told the media that the battle continues, and that forces [may be] targeting elements of Daesh wherever they may be, but [he] declined to mention targeting this particular mosque.”

One resident of al-Faruq neighbourhood (pictured below), was named as killed in the raids.

In its July 2017 casualty report the Coalition appeared to deny responsibility for the attack, noting: “March 1, 2017, near Mosul, Iraq, via social media report: After a review of available information it was assessed that no Coalition strikes were conducted in the geographic area that correspond to the report of civilian casualties.”

The coordinates supplied to Airwars – 36.344546, 43.121074 – were less than 400m from Farouk though were also less than 1000m from Sha’aren, scene of another alleged event that day.

Airwars assessment

Security forces and press sources told Al Araby that two children (aged four and seven years old) were found alive under the rubble by Iraqi forces, while their mother was killed. They reported that she died after a Coalition airstrike bombed their home in Nablus neighbourhood in West Mosul, on the Friday night.

It was reported that the “daylong” crying of the mother had drawn the attention of Iraqi troops, who then lifted the ruins and found the two children, who miraculously survived and were taken to a military hospital. However, the source said that the mother (30 years old) had suffered a head trauma which led to her death.

In their August 2020 civilian casualty report, the US-led Coalition assessed reports that they were responsible for civilian harm in this strike as “non-credible”, stating that the allegation provided insufficient information on the timing and location of the strike to make a determination.

Local residents and press sources said that 49 civilians were killed and 100 injured in the clashes and shelling in the neighborhoods of Nablus, Yarmouk, the Old City and the Haraj market in the West of Mosul.

Ninawa Media Center put the number at 38 for the neigbourhoods of Zangali, Rifai and Najjar.

Al Arabi also said that more than 50 were killed in one day. It reported: “After fighting to no avail for more than 10 hours on the walls of the neighborhoods of Nablus and Yarmouk in the Iraqi city of Mosul, the United States aircraft, on Monday, came into the picture [and] after the transformation of the neighborhood to a block of flames and smoke, the Iraqi forces were able to enter and to clearly extend the control.” It said 49 people died and at least 100 were injured.

For March 19th-20th the Coalition stated: “Near Mosul, six strikes engaged four ISIS tactical units and four ISIS sniper teams; destroyed 17 fighting positions, six heavy machine guns, four vehicles, three rocket-propelled grenade systems, a mortar system, a VBIED factory, an artillery system, and a roadblock; damaged nine supply routes; and suppressed six ISIS mortar teams, five ISIS tactical units, and an ISIS anti-air artillery team.”
