Airwars assessment

Local residents and press sources said that 43 civilians were killed in airstrikes and missile shelling by the International Coalition and Iraqi forces in Zanjili neighbourhood, in the west of Mosul.

Mosul Eye reported:

“Mosul witnessed 20/3/2017 wave of casualties in a large number, and the initial outcome that we were able to collect was as follows:

134 civilian casualties due to military operations

In Zanjili only 43 victims

New Mosul 36 victims

New Bab, Farouk, seen 55 victims”

Iraqi News agency also reported Coalition airstrikes and shelling by Iraqi forces and put the death toll at 100 for the neighbourhoods Zanjili, New Mosul and Old Mosul.

One victim was later named as Hamed Ismail Hassan Ali (pictured).

Local sources reported that six civilians were killed and several others were wounded in an alleged Coalition airstrike on Anah, in the west of Anbar province.

In a suggestion that the deaths were caused by the Iraq Air Force, Saad Awad – the mayor of Anah district – reportedly called on the government’s air force “to be more accurate and cautious with their airstrikes within the judiciary; because they target civilians more than the Islamic State.”

Local sources reported that airstrikes on Tammuz (17 July) neighbourhood in West Mosul killed and injured forty civilians, in a dawn attack.

Iraqyoon said that two neighbourhoods were hit, noting that “an aerial bombardment targeted the neighborhoods of July 17 ( Tammuz ) and al-Rifa’i, West Mosul.”

Mosul News Agency blamed the Coalition. Other sources did not say who was responsible.

One report on social media said that an ISIS member named Ali Ubaid ‘Issa Dagher (Abujrajis) was killed with his “entire family” including his mother in an airstrike. It is presently unclear in which West Mosul neighbourhood the strike occurred.

In its July 2017 civilian casualty report, the Coalition reported that it did not carry out strikes in the area of where civilian casualties were alleged in social media reports. This allegation was previously unknown to Airwars.

Airwars assessment

Local medical sources reported that civil defense teams had pulled as many as 74 bodies from the rubble in Zanjili neighbourhood (West/Old Mosul). The civilians had died as a result of different kinds of shelling on their houses.

Airwars researchers contacted local medical sources, who said a total number of 74 civilians were killed. This number was also reported by Iraqyoon news agency, which said that “ambulances, forensic doctors and civil defense in Mosul recovered 74 bodies from the streets of Zanjili area northwest of Mosul, near the Pepsi plant. The bodies were seen to have the effects of disintegration. Most of them were women and children who were shot by Daesh as they tried to flee the area controlled by the organization.”

Urgent Mosul news posted a series of graphic photos of bodies being pulled from the rubble by civil defense members.

Yaqein said that the Joint Forces had carried out the raids – but did not specify whether the Coalition and/or Iraqi aircraft were involved.

Local media sources reported on the death of an unknown number of civilians, after alleged airstrikes on Qeam district in Anbar Province.

The head of the district council, Abdul Karim al-Ani, called on the government to stop the shelling because it targets the homes of unarmed civilians and has led to deaths and injuries. All sources blamed the US-led Coalition or government aviation for the incidents.

At present, Airwars does not have a number of casualties for this incident.

Local sources reported that as many as 50 civilians died in alleged US-led Coalition air strikes on Al Qaim, west of Anbar province. However, there was doubt regarding their combatant status.

Yagein said that according to one report, civilians had attempted to return to their homes when targeted and up to 50 died. However, its report also quoted a source within the war media cell of ISF who alleged that the Coalition instead killed 47 terrorists in Al Qaim.

Tanha Islam reported dead and wounded as a result of the attack. It blamed the US-led Coalition.
