Airwars assessment

Omar al Halbusi, an Iraqi blogger, claimed that roughly 100 civilians were killed and 220 others were injured in alleged artillery bombardment by the Coalition and the Iraqi government on the Al Meydan area of Old Mosul in the two days prior to July 9th.

Ninawa Media Center added that 30 families which made up roughly 100 people – comprising of children, the elderly and the wounded – were also besieged in the Al Meydan area of the city and have had no access to food or water for three days. It said most of them were wounded.

Airwars assessment

A number of local sources claimed that more than 1,000 civilians had been killed or wounded over a week-long period as a result of alleged Coalition and Iraqi government bombardment of Old Mosul over recent days. However further details were sparse.

Iraq News Center reported that the number of civilian casualties buried under the rubble was so high that civilian defense teams had been unable to keep up in their attempts to recover them, and many remain buried there.

Activist Ali al Hamdani told Alaraby that “intensive bombing” by Iraqi forces was putting many thousands of civilians at risk because they aim to “resolve the battle quickly, without thinking about the fate of the trapped population”.

He added: “Death threatens thousands of civilians, while the bodies of others are still lying in the streets of the liberated areas, some of which are buried in public squares and gardens.”

Three of the five sources claimed that the Iraqi government was responsible. Meanwhile one alleged that both the Iraqi government and the Coalition was responsible.

Airwars assessment

Seven civilians were reportedly killed and several others were injured in alleged Coalition airstrikes on New Anah in western Anbar Province, two local sources reported.

Noor al Mustafa Hayder Dawoud, one of the sources, also reported that the house of Ossman Azzawi, the al Sayed household, Hajji Sayf’s household, Sheikh Nayef’s household, Al Maher Radi’s house and Hussein Ali’s house were hit in strikes on neighbouring Al Rayhana, but said there were no civilian casualties because members of ISIL had forced them out of the area.

Only Omar al Halbusi, the other source, alleged that the Coalition was responsible.

A father and son died as a result of being buried under the rubble in Makkawi, Old Mosul, reported Nineveh Media Center, following likely Coalition airstrikes.

Four families in total were trapped under the rubble, but Iraqyoon News Agency reported that most were still alive. The families were believed to be trapped in the basement of the house next to the Al Masafi Mosque at the entrance of Al Makawi Street.

One child reportedly sustained a broken leg as a result of the incident.

No further details are presently known.

Airwars assessment

On January 13th, a local monitor reported the deaths of three civilians and 3 injured after their home in Medan, Old Mosul was shelled by an unknown source on July 4th.

Mohammed Satter Rejab explains that his mother, sister and her husband were killed in an airstrike and he was himself injured along with his sister and father.

In their June 2020 civilian casualty report, the US-led Coalition assessed reports that they were responsible for civilian harm in this strike as “non-credible”, stating that the allegation provided insufficient information on the timing and location of the strike to make a determination.

A local monitor reported the deaths of four named civilians after their home in Dakkat Barka was shelled by an unknown source.

Mosul Ateka reported “The death of Mus’ab Talal al-Qasab (the son of Mukhtar Daga Baraka), his son, his sister and his sister’s daughter. Their bodies are still under the rubble, while the rest of the family is still in the house. They are seriously injured. They appeal to the honorable authorities to speed up their ambulance after the shelling of their house in Daka Baraka area.”

No additional details are presently known.

In April 2019 the Coalition announced that it had classed this allegation of civilian harm as non-credible, noting: “After review of all available strike records it was determined that more likely than not civilian casualties did not occur as a result of a Coalition strike.”

This allegation had previously been closed by the Coalition in March 2018, however it was reopened due to new information, before being closed again in April 2019.

Two local sources reported the death of a young man, called Hakam Marwan Ghazi, after air strikes were said to have hit him the day before. His body was still under the rubble – and his family were not yet able to bury him.

Sawlf Ateka (local Facebook page) later reported that Mohammed Sharif (Abu Suhaib) had also died as a result of air strikes.

The sources did not say who had carried out the raids. A senior Coalition official informed Airwars on July 5th that “It is primarily Coalition aircraft conducting AIR strikes in Mosul. It has been a number of weeks since the Iraqis flew there.”

Local medical sources reported that civil defense teams had pulled as many as 74 bodies from the rubble in Zanjili neighbourhood (West/Old Mosul). The civilians had died as a result of different kinds of shelling on their houses.

Airwars researchers contacted local medical sources, who said a total number of 74 civilians were killed. This number was also reported by Iraqyoon news agency, which said that “ambulances, forensic doctors and civil defense in Mosul recovered 74 bodies from the streets of Zanjili area northwest of Mosul, near the Pepsi plant. The bodies were seen to have the effects of disintegration. Most of them were women and children who were shot by Daesh as they tried to flee the area controlled by the organization.”

Urgent Mosul news posted a series of graphic photos of bodies being pulled from the rubble by civil defense members.

Yaqein said that the Joint Forces had carried out the raids – but did not specify whether the Coalition and/or Iraqi aircraft were involved.

For July 1st-July 2nd the Coalition publicly reported: “Near Mosul, three strikes engaged two ISIS tactical units and a sniper team; destroyed 13 fighting positions, eight IEDs, three medium machine guns, and a supply cache; damaged 11 fighting positions; and suppressed four sniper teams and two ISIS tactical units.” It additionally reported that “On July 1, near Mosul, Iraq, one strike destroyed an ISIS-held building and damaged four supply routes.”
