Multiple local sources and Al’Amaq [ISIL press agency] reported that up to 108 civilians were killed and 265 were wounded due to artillery shelling and airstrikes by the international Coalition, the Iraqi Joint Forces and popular militia over a number of days.

A medical source had told Yaqein Agency in a press statement that “108 people from Mosul were killed and 265 wounded, mostly children and women, who died during the past four days as a result of continuous shelling on the neighborhoods of the right side [West] of the city of Mosul.” These numbers were also reported by others, who said these were numbers reported by Al’Amaq – the ISIL press agency.

A resident, Um Imam Ahmed, also reported that many had died. On May 16th he posted a photo on Facebook and commented: “The bodies of 30 civilians, including nine members of a family who were killed in the bombing of Coalition aircraft, still under the rubble of a house that was bombed two days ago on the western side of Mosul.”

The Ninawa Media Center said that a local source had confirmed that “a number of unarmed civilians” had died and were injured in Rifai neighbourhood, in north-west Mosul. The Center said that the Coalition had carried out airstrikes on a car bomb near Khaled Ibn al-Walid school – resulting in the destruction of the homes of these civilians.

Airwars assessment

Multiple local sources reported that a family of four brothers and their uncle, as well as a man with his son, and a woman, were killed in Rifae neighborhood after missiles and airstrikes hit the area. The raids took place in the street near the Mufti Mosque, in front of the medical clinic, and near Al Talib mosque.

The woman killed was “the wife of Brigadier Hilal Sabah Al-Fakhri” and the mother of both the lawyer Mohammed and Dr. Sabah. She reportedly died after raids hit their house.

MNN news and several other local media furthermore reported that Professor Ismail Hamo Abu Abdullah (pictured below) died after an airstrike hit his house in Rifae neighbourhood. Yaqein said that his only son was also killed in the bombing.

Sawlf Ateka reported five other victims:

“Yesterday, Wednesday, the missile shelling targeted the house of Hossam Ahmed Hassan al-Dulaimi near Al Talib mosque in Al-Rifa’i neighborhood. The shelling led to the martyrdom of his four sons and the martyrdom of his brother Waddah Ahmad Hassan al-Dulaimi.” MNN mentioned the same information.

Airwars assessment

One woman and one girl were reportedly killed in Dabsi Afnan in Raqqa governorate, roughly 30km west of Tabaqah, but it was contested who was responsible.

Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently (RBSS) and the Syrian Network for Human Rights alleged that the Coalition was responsible for the airstrikes, while Mohab Nasser, Euphrates Post and several other sources reported that the Syrian government was to blame.

Al Ragga Truth and Ahmad al Shibli also reported the airstikes, but did not allege who was responsible.

Pro-Hezbollah outlet Almanar TV reported a death toll of six, including two women, and blamed the attack on the Coalition.

"Wednesday 24 May – a Reaper attacked near Raqqa, whilst Tornados prosecuted four Daesh targets in Mosul…A Reaper, conducting surveillance south-west of Raqqa on Wednesday 24 May, kept watch on a small group of terrorists and was able to conduct a successful attack with a Hellfire missile. In Mosul, when advancing Iraqi security forces found themselves facing two buildings defended by a Daesh heavy machine-gun, a sniper team and at least one individual in a suicide-bomb vest, they called for assistance from a flight of Tornados. Our aircraft delivered a very precise simultaneous attack with two Paveway IVs which destroyed both terrorist strongpoints. The Tornados then hit a third terrorist position, again with a Paveway, whilst a second flight bombed a fourth position."

An unspecified number of civilians died and one named civilian was injured in airstrikes and/or an artillery bombardment on Raqqa’s Bado neighbourhood, according to local sources.

Mohammed Amiro was named as injured when an artillery shell fell behind the Directorate of Water in the Bado neighbourhood – though sources didn’t identify the culprit.

RFS reported that Raqqa was under ” heavy shelling from the international coalition aircraft and the artillery of the Syrian Democratic Forces”.

It reported that “the city was exposed to a large number of missiles targeting different areas in the city, including (Faculty of Science – Haraamiya neighborhood – the Euphrates basin garage – Al-Taamir garage – Al-Sakia Street), killing a number of civilians and injuring others, while also causing extensive damage to buildings and public facilities.”

The source went on to add that “some activists and residents of al-Raqqa reported the deaths of at least 70 people during the first three days of Ramadan.”

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported “that three warplanes carried out three raids on the town of Al-Mayadin in the eastern countryside of Deir Al-Zour. The first two raids targeted a pre-fabricated area, while the other raids targeted an IS near the grain center, killing two elements of the organization of Syrian nationality”.

‘Wednesday 7 June – a Reaper killed two terrorists planting booby-traps in Raqqa, while a Tornado and a Typhoon attacked two Daesh-held buildings south-west of the city… The RAF is continuing to support Iraqi forces in their effort to liberate western Mosul. While the operating environment in the city is very challenging, particularly given the closely-packed buildings, very narrow streets, and the density of the urban population, our aircrew have continued to deliver precision strikes in close support of Iraqi troops on the ground. Daesh’s current tactics, including the illegal use of civilians as human shields, and fighting from sites such as schools, hospitals, religious sites and civilian neighbourhoods, increases the risk to innocent life. While no military operations come without risk, particularly in dense urban environments and against such inhuman Daesh tactics, the RAF continues to take all steps necessary to minimise civilian casualties. Royal Air Force aircraft have provided close air support to the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) who are now fighting Daesh on the outskirts of Raqqa. In Mosul, our aircraft are continuing to assist Iraqi troops in clearing remaining Daesh positions in and around the city. A Reaper remotely piloted aircraft flew an armed reconnaissance patrol over northern Raqqa on Wednesday 7 June. It observed two extremists burying booby-traps along routes into the city. Hellfire missiles were deployed, killing both. Some 45 miles south-west of Raqqa, a mixed pair of Tornado and Typhoon fast jets used a Brimstone missile to hit one Daesh-held building. A Paveway IV guided bomb left a second target on fire.’

Eight Iraqi police were accidentally injured and one or two killed following an airstrike, according to multiple sources.

According to Yaqein, “a government source said in a statement that ‘the fourth regiment of the Ninewa Emergency Police headed to support the federal police in the area of ​​Wadi Akab in west Mosul, adding that as a result of a close clash with ISIL gunmen the area was bombed airstrikes.’ The source added that ‘the bombing resulted in the death of a policeman (Karim Pazo or Karim Bawz Sinjari) from Sinjar and the wounding of eight others, including Colonel Ahmed Juma who suffered a serious injury and was transferred to a hospital in the province of Erbil.” Another site reported that police commissioner Abbas Mustafa was severely injured.

NRT TV reported that two police offiicers died, adding that it was unclear whether Iraqi or Coalition aircraft were responsible.

In an incident not previously tracked by Airwars, on September 29th, 2017 the Coalition said it had concluded an assessment on social media claims of civilian harm “near Mosul, Iraq”. According to the Coalition report, “112. June 17, 2017, near Mosul, Iraq, via social media report: The report contains insufficient information of the time, location and details to assess its credibility.”

The Coalition shared the location of this assessed strike with Airwars. The location was stated as al Shafaa neighbourhood in Mosul.

No additional details are presently known.
