Airwars assessment

In an incident not previously tracked by Airwars, on April 1st 2017 the Coalition said it had concluded an assessment on social media claims of civilian harm “near Raqqa, Iraq”. According to the Coalition report, “108. May 22, 2017, near Raqqah, Syria, via social media report: After a review of available information it was assessed that no Coalition strikes were conducted in the geographical area that correspond to the report of civilian casualties.”

The Coalition shared the location of this assessed strike with Airwars. The location was stated as Kadiran in the vicinity of Raqqa.

The strike was assessed as non credible based on the claim that “no Coalition strikes were conducted in the geographical area that correspond to the report of civilian casualties.” However, the Coalition reported multiple strikes in Raqqa that day.

No additional details are presently known.

Airwars assessment

At least 17 civilians – reportedly displaced persons – were killed when buses transporting them were hit by Coalition airstrikes according to local reports.

The Syrian Observatory reported that 18 people were killed in Coalition airstrikes in the vicinity of al-Kasrat, of whom at least 10 members of ISIS. The Observatory said that some attacks hit buses on the road between al Kasrat and Ratla village.

Smart News put the death toll at 17 and said the Coalition strikes hit public buses transporting civilians south of Raqqa city. Many other outlets cited the figure of 17 or 18, and gave similar accounts.

Baladi News had a higher death toll of 20, and said that others were injured when the buses were attacked. Masaida said there were women and children among the dead, and added that 20 were injured.

Unusually no victims were named.

In its December 2017 civilian casualty report, the Coalition confirmed that “During a Coalition strike which destroyed an ISIS headquarters building it was assessed the three civilians were unintentionally killed.” However officials have refused to provide co-ordinates for the event, meaning that we cannot presently determine whether this was incident S763; S765; S766; S767; S768 or perhaps a new event.

Airwars assessment

The Coalition reportedly struck an ISIL weapons depot in the Al Ta’as area of Bokros town. Sources said that member of ISIL were killed – however only one report mentioned civilian casualties.

Sharqiya Voice reported that there were aftershocks following an air raid (but didn’t say who carried it out), and an explosion which “shook the area”. It reported an unspecified number of civilian casualties and that ISIL had cordoned off the area, preventing people from accessing it.

According to RFS, “An international air strike on Thursday targeted an arms depot belonging to the Daesh in the town of Bokros, east of Deir Ezzor, killing four members of the organization.”

Shaam News Network reported that “Warplanes of the International coalition launched air strikes targeting an ammunition depot in the town of Bokros in the eastern countryside followed by the sound of explosions.”

Airwars assessment

Multiple local sources said that more than 13 members from one family were “scattered under the rubble” of their houses in Shifa neighborhood, in the centre/ west of Mosul. Unidentified aircraft had allegedly hit the houses.

Sawlf Ateka, a local Facebook group, said that Abdullah al-Mazouri had died in the raids (see photo below). In a later post, the page reported that he used to be an engineer, and that in total 13 people had lost their lives in the airstrikes. The house was located in Albbsi Street in Shifa neighbourhood, near the Bursa (stock market) area. The page asked to save them. It is unclear how many of the civilians under the rubble died, though it weas implied that all had died.

A tweet by @hhcc7 suggested that most of the victims were women and children.

According, to Sharqiya Voice, there were “a number of civilian martyrs and wounded after warplanes raided Aisha hospital in al Abu Kamal.” The source went on to report that there were “more than 10 raids” by the Coalition on “the Al Sina’a area, al Hajana and the area around Aisha hospital.”

Euphrates Post said that 10 wounded members of IS had been transferred to the hospital and that “Coalition aircraft targeted the vicinity of Aisha hospital at 4 pm.”

Two women were killed and several others were injured in the Al Badu neighbourhood of Raqqa, allegedly caused by SDF mortars or supporting Coalition airstrikes.

Several sources reported that seven people were wounded in the raid. However Madar News reported that at least 10 people were wounded.

Eleven of 14 sources reported that the US-backed SDF, the Coalition or a combination of the two parties were allegedly responsible for the civilian casualties.

For June 14th-20th, 19 strikes were made by French aircraft in Iraq and Syria. Most of them were carried out during the Battle of Mosul, in support of the Iraqi fighters engaged in the fighting to drive ISIL out of its positions in the North of the Medina. The other strikes were carried out in support of the fighting for the capture of Raqqah, and against flows of arms and fighters in Iraq and Syria.

The declassified documents were obtained by Azmat Khan and the New York Times through Freedom of Information requests and lawsuits filed since March 2017, and are included alongside the corresponding press release published by the Pentagon. For June 18th-19th the Coalition reported: “Near Raqqah, 12 strikes engaged 10 ISIS tactical units and destroyed four vehicles, two fighting positions, two mortar systems, a VBIED, a tactical vehicle, and a heavy machine gun.” It additionally reported that “On June 18, near Raqqah, Syria, three strikes engaged three ISIS tactical units, destroyed eight fighting positions and a mortar system, and suppressed an ISIS tactical unit.” And that “On June 18, near Raqqah, Syria, one strike engaged an ISIS tactical unit and destroyed five fighting positions; damaged eight fighting positions; and suppressed an ISIS tactical unit.”

For June 19th-20th: “Near Raqqah, eight strikes engaged seven ISIS tactical units and destroyed 15 fighting positions and a vehicle.” It additionally reported that “On June 19, near Raqqah, Syria, one strike engaged an ISIS tactical unit and destroyed a fighting position and a UAS launch site.”

For June 14th-20th, 19 strikes were made by French aircraft in Iraq and Syria. Most of them were carried out during the Battle of Mosul, in support of the Iraqi fighters engaged in the fighting to drive ISIL out of its positions in the North of the Medina. The other strikes were carried out in support of the fighting for the capture of Raqqah, and against flows of arms and fighters in Iraq and Syria.

Cette semaine, les aéronefs de l’opération Chammal ont réalisé 34 sorties aériennes dont 31 de reconnaissance armée ou d’appui au sol (CAS) et 3 de recueil de renseignements. 19 frappes ont été réalisées par les avions français en Irak et en Syrie. La majeure partie d’entre elle ont été réalisées dans le cadre de la bataille de Mossoul, en appui des combattants irakiens engagés dans les combats pour chasser Daech de ses positions au Nord de la Médina.
