Airwars assessment

Some local language Twitter users alleged that US battleships bombarded the area of Mojan, al-Maraqisha, Abyan province early on February 1st 2017, where AQAP militants were allegedly based.  One source claimed that fisherman in the Shaqra area spotted American battleships approaching from the coast.  There were no known reports of civilian or combatant casualties.

Other sources later claimed that US shelling took place in the same area on February 2nd.  One anonymous Yemeni government official, speaking to Reuters, said regarding the February 2nd strikes that “Ships fired several missiles towards the al-Maraqisha mountains, where al Qaeda elements are based. The ships are widely believed to be Americans.  We have received no information on the outcome of the shelling.”

On February 2nd, the Washington Times reported that “government officials” had told the Associated Press that the area had been shelled by US warships for five consecutive days, though no further sources corroborated this claim.  According to Reuters, the “al-Maraqisha mountains are a key al-Qaeda stronghold in Southern Yemen”, after militants were driven there when Zinjibar and Jaar fell to Yemeni government forces in 2016.

US Pentagon spokesperson Captain Jeff Davies denied US involvement in naval shelling, Reuters reported.  One Twitter source indicated that tribal sheikh Faisal Mohammed Baleedi denied any bombing in the region, while Al Mushahid reported that a “security source” also denied that shelling was taking place.

The incident occured in the morning.

Airwars assessment

Several sources reported that a US drone strike killed at least one alleged AQAP militant travelling in a car in Wadi Yashbum, Shabwa governorate, at 4pm on March 6th 2017. There are no known associated reports of civilian harm.

Casualty assessments varied.  According to Yemenat, the strike “resulted in the burning of the car” and killed three AQAP militants. Reuters reported that, according to tribal sources and residents, “the bodies of two local men believed to be members of al Qaeda were found charred beyond recognition”. Yemen Current reported that one militant, Naji Lasoud Barasin, was killed in the strike, and that another person escaped.  As such, Airwars has assessed that a minimum of one alleged belligerent was killed, with a maximum of three.

This reported event took place amid a dramatic intensification of US operations against AQAP in March 2017. On March 6th, Pentagon spokesman Captain Jeff Davis announced that 40 strikes had been conducted in Yemen over the previous five nights.  A day earlier, AFP reported that AQAP militants had begun to withdraw from several areas, including Yakla, in response to US strikes.

The incident occured at 16:00:00 local time.

Defense Department officials detected and tracked multiple missile launches out of North Korea today, four of which landed in the Sea of Japan, Pentagon spokesman Navy Capt. Jeff Davis told reporters this morning.

Davis said the four medium-range ballistic missiles were launched from the northwest corner of North Korea, traveled over the Korean Peninsula and out into the sea, totaling about 1,000 kilometers in distance, or more than 620 miles.

Missiles Land Off Japan’s Coast

The missiles landed in the vicinity of Akita Prefecture off the coast of Japan near that nation’s exclusive economic zone, he said. The EEZ is defined as a sea zone prescribed by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea over which a state has special rights regarding the exploration and use of marine resources, including energy production from water and wind.

“The North American Aerospace Defense Command detected that the missiles from North Korea did not pose a threat to North America,” Davis said. “This [North Korean missile launch] is very similar in terms of the path and the distance of the three missiles that flew into Japan’s EEZ in September 2016.”

He added, “These launches, which coincide with the start of our annual defensive exercise, Foal Eagle, with the Republic of Korea’s military, are consistent with North Korea’s long history of provocative behavior, often timed to military exercises that we do with our ally,”

The United States stands with its allies “in the face of this very serious threat and are taking steps to enhance our ability to defend against North Korea’s ballistic missiles, such as the deployment of a [Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense] battery to South Korea, which will happen as soon as feasible,” Davis said.

U.S. Strikes AQAP in Yemen

Also overnight, the United States made an airstrike on Yemen’s Abyan Governorate against al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula fighters, bringing to 40 the strikes there in the past five nights, Davis said.

Since the first airstrike against al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula in Yemen on Feb. 28, “We will continue to target [al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula] militants and facilities to disrupt the organization’s plot and protect American lives,” the captain said.

The strikes have been coordinated with and done in full partnership with the government of Yemen with the goal of denying al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula terrorists’ freedom of movement within traditional safe havens, Davis emphasized.

The captain also confirmed the deaths of three al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula operatives in March 2 and 3 airstrikes in Yemen.

Usayd al Adani, whom Davis described as a longtime al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula explosives expert and facilitator who served as the organization’s emir, was killed in a U.S. airstrike March 2 within the Abyan Governorate. Killed with him was former Naval Air Station Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, detainee Yasir al Silmi.

Killed March 3 was al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula fighter and communications intermediary for Adani, Harithah al Waqri, Davis said.

“[Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula] has taken advantage of ungoverned spaces in Yemen to plot, direct and inspire terror attacks against the United States and our allies,” he said. “And we will continue to work with the government of Yemen to defeat [al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula].

Airwars assessment

In an email to the Bureau of Investigative Journalism, US Central Command confirmed that a strike had targeted three “AQAP terrorists” in Shabwa on April 29th. This confirmed earlier reports that a US drone strike had killed at least two alleged AQAP militants travelling in a Vitara car in the Tamoura area, in the Al Rawdah district of Shabwa governorate, on the afternoon of April 29th 2017. There were no known associated reports of civilian harm.

Sources differed over the number of alleged militants killed in the strike. One local language Twitter source said that one died and another survived the strike. Several sources, including Al-Arabi, reported that two were killed, while one source reported four dead. Most reports indicated that three people had died in the strike.

Yemen Shabab and some other sources reported that two were killed instantly, while another was hospitalised in Azzan and later died of his wounds.

Several sources reported that AQAP leader Abu al-Qaqa Barhama was among the fatalities. According to one outlet, pro-AQAP sources named the others as Shihab al-Hajji and Abu al-Bara’ al-Baydani.

The incident occured in the afternoon.

Original strike reports

US Forces

U.S. forces conducted two strikes against AQAP in Yemen April 29. The first strike targeted three AQAP terrorists in Shabwah Governorate and the second strike was against four AQAP terrorists in Marib Governorate.

U.S. forces are conducting a series of sustained operations in Yemen against AQAP to degrade the group's ability to coordinate external terror attack operations and limit their ability to hold territory seized from the legitimate government of Yemen and use it as safe space for terror plotting.

Since Feb. 28, the U.S. has conducted more than 80 precision strikes against AQAP militants, infrastructure, fighting positions and equipment. We'll continue to conduct operations - including strikes - against known terrorists.

AQAP is one of the terrorist groups most committed to and capable of conducting attacks in America, as assessed by the intelligence and defense communities. In recent years, AQAP has taken advantage of ungoverned spaces in Yemen to plot, direct and inspire terror attacks against America, its citizens and allies around the world.

Airwars assessment

A US drone strike reportedly targeted an alleged AQAP training camp in a mountainous area of Saeed in Shabwa governorate, local residents told Reuters.

Early on March 6th 2017, Elwatan News also indicated that, according to an Anatolia Agency report, a strike against a training camp in Saeed had taken place on that day.  The original Anatolia article could not be found by Airwars. Some social media sources similarly generically reported, early on March 6th, that strikes had taken place in both Shabwa and Bayda. AFP described the attack as taking place around early dawn. Given this, the event is assessed as having taken place on the early morning of March 6th.

Elwatan News reported that, according to local sources, “only civilians were wounded” in the course of this strike and another in Novan, Bayda governorate. Since it was unclear which specific strike was alleged to have resulted in civilian harm, this report is accounted for by Airwars in the Novan entry (USYEMTr040-C). However, this event has been assessed as including a ‘weak’ allegation of civilian harm.

This reported event took place amid a dramatic intensification of US operations against AQAP in March 2017. On March 6th, Pentagon spokesman Captain Jeff Davis announced that forty strikes had been conducted in Yemen over the previous five nights. Earlier, AFP reported that AQAP militants had begun to withdraw from several areas in response to US attacks.

In their May 2018 annual civilian casualty report, the US Department of Defense stated that “there were credible reports of civilian casualties caused by U.S. military actions in Yemen against AQAP and ISIS during 2017”, but did not specify which specific actions these reports referred to.  Overall, the Department of Defense assessed that there were credible reports of “approximately 499 civilians killed and approximately 169 civilians injured during 2017”, as a result of US military actions in Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, and Yemen.

The incident occured around dawn.

Airwars assessment

Between five and 14 militants were killed and 50 others were wounded in alleged US or Yemeni airstrikes or drone strikes on the city of Zinjibar on July 29, 2011.

In a tweet from @YusraAIA, Yemeni aircraft were identified as being used as “camouflage” to cover up U.S. drone strikes. According to @FADHLESAY, fourteen people were killed and another fifty wounded by a series of bombings from Yemeni warplanes in Zinjibar. Militants who had gained control of the town were the reported targets.

Ma’reb Press reported that the Yemeni air force bombed areas known for “tribal gatherings” heading towards Zanjibar. In the fighting, five members of the Yemen military, including Colonel Muhammad al-Salahi, were killed along with an equal number of Al Qaeda operatives. There had been a series of clashes between the Yemeni military and Al Qaeda operatives. The military actions taken by the Yemeni military were reportedly done with either the support of or coordination with the United States and @YusraAIA directly mentions US involvement.

The local time of the incident is unknown.
