Airwars assessment

At least two and up to four civilians were reported killed, including two children, and between seven and eleven were reported injured, when an alleged Russian airstrike hit the village of Yakovlivka, Kharkiv, on March 2nd 2022.

Novynarnia news reported that the head of the Merefyan community, Veniamin Sitov said after the attack that “there was an air raid at night, at approximately 11.30pm, the village of Yakovlivka was practically destroyed, the population of the village is 600 people. At night 11 people were evacuated, 11 wounded, two dead, two people are being searched for.” The head of the Merefyan community later updated news outlets to confirm that the number of dead has risen to four after two bodies which were considered missing were found in the rubble. The bodies were of a man and a woman, both civilians who had lived in the village.

The Department of Emergency Situations had a slightly different death toll, they reported to LB.ua news that “seven people were injured, 10 people were rescued from the rubble. Unfortunately three of our compatriots died.”

LB.ua news reported that the attack was recorded by rescuers at 10.57pm.

RBC.ua news reported that “at least three people were killed, two of them civilians. Eight people were injured and taken to hospital.” This number in relation to those killed has been reflected in the death toll, as it is unclear how many could have been actively involved in hostilities.

Novynarnia news reported that at least 35 houses were destroyed. RBC.ua put this number at 45 houses which had been damaged, and 21 of them were completely destroyed. Helsinki.org.ua also reported that “a school, village council, and private houses were damaged.”

This assessment has reference to ACLED code UKR52760.

The incident occured at 22:57:00 local time.

At approximately 4:00pm on April 12 2022, in Baryinkove, Izyum district, confirmed shelling by Russian Federation armed forces reportedly killed 3 civilians including a 16-year-old girl and injured a 20-year-old man. Residential buildings were also reportedly damaged and destroyed.

All hostages held by the Nazis on ships in the port, including foreign ones, have been released. The remnants of the units of the Ukrainian troops and the Nazis "Azov" located in the city are blocked and deprived of the opportunity to escape from the encirclement. 💥 During the day, 36 enemy objects were destroyed by high-precision weapons. Among them: in the settlements of Vrubovka and Berestovoe, two repair bases and two depots of rocket and artillery weapons of the 57th and 24th mechanized brigades of the Ukrainian troops; in the areas of Popasnaya and Barvenkovo, five strongholds of units of the 24th separate mechanized brigade; in the village of Cherkasy, the command post of the 15th separate regiment of the National Guard of Ukraine. 💥 The headquarters and fuel depot of the 128th Separate Mountain Assault Brigade in the Gulyai-Pole area were also destroyed. 💥 Operational-tactical aviation hit 10 military facilities of Ukraine. Among them: a command post, three depots of rocket and artillery weapons, as well as 6 areas of concentration of Ukrainian military equipment. 📊 In total, since the beginning of the special military operation, 130 aircraft, 103 helicopters, 244 anti-aircraft missile systems, 447 unmanned aerial vehicles, 2173 tanks and other armored combat vehicles, 243 installations of multiple launch rocket systems, 937 field artillery guns and mortars, as well as 2082 units of special military vehicles. ▫️ We see attempts of sabotage and strikes by Ukrainian troops on objects on the territory of the Russian Federation. ❗️ If such cases continue, then the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation will strike at decision-making centers, including in Kyiv, from which the Russian army has so far refrained.

Airwars assessment

On May 8th 2022, two civilians, two men, were reportedly killed following alleged Russian artillery shelling in Kalynove (Kalinove) village, Kharkiv oblast.

Ukrainska Pravda said: “In Kalynove, two people were killed when a projectile hit a house. The shelling of the village took place from the side of Kozachya Lopana at approximately 4:00 p.m. [according to] Kovalenko’s [head of Zolochiv community] direct speech: “Two men, 71 and 51 years old, went to a house to have lunch. And then a projectile flew right into the house. Both died.” Kharkiv Human Rights Protection group reported that “a shell hit the house where two men were staying. The direct hit started a fire that destroyed the entire building and left the men with life-threatening injuries”.

The Victims Memorial platform published the story as well as testimonies of family and friends of the 50 years-old victim, stating that that man died “in the yard of his neighbor and friend”. According to that source, the man was born and lived in Kalynove village. He “worked in a bakery of one of the supermarkets in Kharkiv”. He was described by the mayor of the district as a “kind and hardworking person”, “helping his neighbors as much as he could” during the full-scale war. Below are two testimonies quoted by Victims Memorial from one of his daughers and from one of his friends:

“Dad was not used to sitting idly by – and at home, after work, he always had a lot of trouble: gardens, livestock, household chores. He worked all his life for the benefit of the family. His only recreation was watching movies. Dad was the best for me. (…) Dad always waited for me at home after school. There are no words to explain how painful it is… This is a terrible and irreparable loss in my life…”

“He was a loving father, husband, grandfather, son and best friend! He raised two daughters with great love and care. He helped everyone who turned to him, did not refuse [to help] even in difficult situations. [He] sought to develop and live fully. At the age of 50, he bought his first car. Words cannot convey all the pain and sadness, because a person has just begun to achieve success,”

The General Prosecutor Office on Telegram added that apart from the two victims, Russian shelling also damaged “ten residential buildings” and that “more than ten more were destroyed.”. Another source quoting the head of the Zolochiv community, Viktor Kovalenko, said “the occupiers hit Kalinovy from the side of Kozachai Lopan. The shelling ended around 16:00. As a result, eight houses were destroyed and a fire broke out.”

Politinform reported that “due to this fact, criminal proceedings have been opened under Part 2 of Article 438 (violation of the laws and customs of war, related to intentional murder) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The pre-trial investigation is conducted by the investigative department of the Security Service of Ukraine in the Kharkiv region, the regional prosecutor’s office is in charge of the process.”

ACLED’s reference code for this incident is UKR57453.

The incident occured at approximately 4:00 pm local time.

Airwars assessment

On April 19, 2022 alleged Russian missile strikes on the Moscow District of Kharkiv and other residential areas in Kharkiv are reported to have killed between three and 10 civilians and injured between 14 and 40 others.

Most of the assessments of the strike are based on a report by the Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office, which states that a Russian urugan (“Hurricane”) missile strike on the Moscow District at 1:20 PM killed four civilians and injured 14. Also commonly cited is the prosecutor’s statement that the strikes damaged more than 10 residential buildings, garages, and a supermarket.

Kharkiv Human Rights Protection Group added that in addition to the civilians killed and injured in the Moscow district, around the same time (in the afternoon), six people were killed and an unknown number of civilians were injured in the Saltivka district of Kharkiv. Kharkiv Life on Telegram specified that a missile attack on the Silpo supermarket in Saltivka district resulted in several victims of shrapnel but did not specify how many.

Numerous photos purporting to show the damaged buildings and supermarket accompany many of the posts.

Other sources offer a more varied account of the number of civilians killed in the strikes, although all seem to agree that the strikes were carried out by Russian forces. Accounts such as TrukhaUkraine via Telegram say that two were killed (later updated to four) and 40 wounded in strikes by “orcs”, a derogatory term for Russian forces, and Alekseevkak stated via Telegram that five were killed and 17 injured in Russian strikes on numerous areas of Kharkiv.

Some of the varying accounts may be explained by the scope of the incidents they are describing. The ACLED Dataset, for example, cites attacks on numerous city districts, whereas the report from the prosecutor’s office is focused on Russian missile strikes on the Moscow District.

Similarly, account such as Unian News, Suspline Media, and Kharkiv OVA state that 26 were injured due to Russian shelling on April 19, although the distinction between the incident focused on the Moscow District and Russian shelling of other areas of Kharkiv is not entirely clear.

Numerous accounts such as Hromadske News, Suspilnekharkiv via Telegram, and Radiosvoboda News cite preliminary estimates by Kharkiv Regional Military Administration Oleg Sinegubov, with most of them estimating three killed and 21 injured (Radiosvoboda says 3 killed, 16 wounded) by Russian shelling in areas of the city such as Kyiv, Industrial, Dergachiv and Chuguiv.

Radiosvoboda News quoted the head of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration Oleg Sinegubov who identified Russian using rocket salvo systems from a distance of 35-40 km to attack residential areas in Kharkiv.

This assessment has reference to ACLED code UKR56105.

The incident occured at approximately 1:20 pm local time.
