Airwars assessment

Local sources reported more than twenty civilians died – mostly children and women – after artillery shelling and/or an airstrike hit their houses in Zanjili neighbourhood, West Mosul. Among the victims were eleven members of one family. Most sources blamed Iraqi government forces for the shelling, while others did not say who was responsible.

Local Facebook page Sawlf Ateka reported that Hussein Abbas (see photo below) died in the “battle for the liberation of Zanjili’.

According to Euphrates Post, “Coalition planes targeted a motorbike driven by a member of Daesh with his wife and child, killing them immediately. The child survived. They were Uzbek nationals.”

Shaam News Network also said the Coalition struck the motorcycle, killing two members of IS, but made no mention of civilian casualties.

In an incident not previously tracked by Airwars, on September 29th 2017 the Coalition said it had concluded an assessment on claims of civilian harm “near Raqqa, Syria” via an “NGO report”. According to the Coalition report, “96. June 1, 2017, near Raqqah, Syria, via NGO report: The casualty reported in this allegation was a result of a landmine. The Coalition does not use landmines, therefore this allegation was deemed non-credible.”

The Coalition shared the military coordinates of this assessed strike with Airwars: 37SDV9981980364.

Airwars assessment

In the Amnesty and Airwars’s joint April 2019 report “War in Raqqa: Rhetoric versus Reality”, two civilians were reportedly killed in alleged Coalition airstrikes in Raqqa. Although Airwars assesses single sourced incidents as “weak”, researchers have assessed this incident “fair” due to the depth of material provided by Amnesty.

The report stated that “Hassan Hammadi Ibrahim, 38, and his son Ibrahim, six, were both killed in airstrike which destroyed the five-storey building they were staying in.”

The location of the strike is a five storey building by old mosque, near Faruq school.

In addition to this, Kawthar, mother and wife to the victims told Amnesty in a testimony that “I was at my family with my other children when the building was bombed and my husband and my boy were killed.”

In July 2019 the Coalition announced that it had classed this allegation of civilian harm as non-credible. Their monthly civilian casualty report noted “After a review of available information it was assessed that no Coalition actions were conducted in the geographical area that corresponds to the report of civilian casualties.”

A nine year old girl was killed, and another girl was wounded, due to the explosion of cluster bomb remnants, dropped earlier by an airstrike, according to local media. The bomb dropped earlier, the date is unspecified, was likely to be Russian.

The girls were reportedly playing close to the remnants, in the town of Ma’arat Al-Nu’man, Idlib, when they were struck.

@radioamalfm1 , @Syria_feed and Smart News all reported that a drone struck a car belonging to IS at the entrance to the city – but the reports made no mention of civilian casualties. Euphrates Post said the car was struck on the road to Raqqa.
