Airwars assessment

Up to eighteen people were killed and 24 injured – mostly women and children – in government and Coalition airstrikes, in Al Qaim, Anbar province.

Yaqein reported the incident and added – quoting local sources – that “the raids focused on the areas of Karabila and Saada east of the city, and resulted in the complete destruction of four houses and damaged the homes and property of civilians.” Yaqein furthermore said that “it is noteworthy that the cities of Anbar province are exposed daily to a retaliatory bombing by government and international [forces] causing the killing of many innocent civilians and the destruction of their homes.”

News of Iraq (Facebook) also noted the incident and blamed the Coalition for the raids. Euphrates Post put the death toll at 18, but did not say who was responsible. Iraqi Spring Media Center said that 17 people were killed, including two children and 3 women (in a first report mentioned as “injured”), and 24 others were wounded, mostly women and children.

Raedlay posted a video of the effects, which was later deleted, of what was reported as “US bombing on the town of Karabilah”.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Airwars assessment

On the afternoon of August 23, 2023, a man was killed and at least one person, a female journalist, was injured in an alleged Turkish drone strike on the Qamishli-Amuda road in Northeast Syria.

The man, Najm al-Din Faisal, worked for woman-run channel JIN TV, and was driving fellow channel employees. Dalila Akid, a journalist, was wounded. After undergoing treatment, Hawar News confirmed that Akid has been released from being operated on and is now under intensive care.

ANF News claimed multiple people were in the car and Kurdistan TV has specified that several journalists were injured, but no further information has been released.

Hawar News wrote about Najm al-Din Faisal, the driver killed in the drone strikes: Najm was 46 years old, born on March 30, 1977 and came from the village of Al-Jawhariya in Amuda district. He had five brothers and three sisters, and he is the 3rd brother among them. Najm left school after his “primary” education to help his family by working in agriculture, and he was married at the age of 29 and had three daughters and one son named Vian, Beretan, Amara, Maashouq. During the Rojava revolution, Najm joined the theater within the Culture and Art Authority in Amuda district as a volunteer without pay and began working for Jin TV as a driver at the beginning of 2021, according to his sister Perwin Faisal.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights identified the location of the strikes as near Mazar Shaikh Jabr Village on Ali Faro Road. An eyewitness told Radio Arta that he saw residents of Tal Shair Sheikhan removing the victims from the car after it was struck.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and the Free Medium Union alleged that the car was struck in an attempt to silence independent journalists. The Media Department for AANES consequently released a statement condemning “the Turkish occupation and its Syrian mercenaries” for the attack. Kurdistan TV reported that JIN TV—“Woman” TV in Kurdish—has ties to the Kurdistan Workers Party, and suggests this may be why the vehicle was attacked.

The incident occured in the afternoon.

The victims were named as:

Najm al-Din Faisal نجم الدين فيصل
Age unknown male killed
Dalila Akid دليلة عكيد
Age unknown female injured

Airwars assessment

Local sources reported that the international Coalition and/or US aircraft had carried out airstrikes in New Mosul neighborhood, West Mosul, leaving up to 30 civilians dead and 14 others wounded. The Coalition later confirmed killing eight civilians in Mosul that day.

Iraq News Center said that bombing by “international Coalition aircraft” had led to the death and wounding of civilians, including women and children. Raedlay spoke of a “US raid” and reported the same number of dead and injured.

Amsi News said that “so-called international coalition raids into residential neighborhoods in the area of New Mosul… caused the death of 21 civilians on the spot, and injuring 14 others, as well as great destruction of property and homes.”

Prevision posted a video of the aftermath in which a witness reported a total number of 30 bodies: “It’s a residential compound including four houses. Each one includes two floors which were completely destroyed by Coalition crusade airstrikes…we got out 14 bodies as yet, and there are 9 bodies still under rubble, and there are 4 women bodies and three children bodies in the house behind this compound…mostly kids and women.”

Alquds and Alwaght quoted Reuters saying that that the raids targeted the house of a senior ISIL leader, Abdul Qadir, who was not at home at the time of the bombing. However, several of his family members were reportedly killed. Alwaght spoke of “tens of civilians” massacred and blamed the Coalition.

An Amnesty International field investigation reported the following: “On 13 January at around 8.15am, explosions destroyed nine dwellings in al-Shuhada neighbourhood. “Kamel” and “Hashem”, two 26-year-old men from the area, described what they believe was a helicopter strike, which destroyed Kamel’s uncle’s house. They said the helicopter fired three times, with each rocket it launched destroying three single-room dwellings. Nine dwellings were destroyed in total.

“Hashem” described the attack as follows: “I was close by at my mother’s house. We were eating breakfast. At 8.15am and without warning the first rocket struck the homes, followed by two others. Each came from a different direction. It was all over in five or 10 minutes. After the last rocket landed we ran down to the scene. We were scared but we’re Arabs and if there are dead people we must go down to them. We dug the bodies out. We pulled them out of the rubble. They were torn apart. Heads and arms had been severed. The target was a well-known IS commander called Harbi Abdel Gadir. He was killed, along with almost everyone else in the homes: more than 40 people. All the women and children were killed. There were only three survivors, Mohamed, Asher and Salman. They were taken to an IS-run hospital.

According to the witnesses, this strike killed one IS target at a cost of 40 civilian lives. Based upon the information available, this attack should be investigated as a possible disproportionate attack.”

The incident occured at 08:15:00 local time.

Airwars assessment

Between three and five civilians including two children and one woman died and up to 20 others were injured in an alleged Coalition airstrike on Nayrab, according to local sources. The Coalition later denied involvement.

The Syrian Network said “At least 3 civilians (two children and a woman) died in international Coalition warplanes missiles fired south of Al Nayrab town in Idlib.” Idlib Media Center also said the raids were thought to have been carried out by the Coalition, reporting the death of two children and the injuring of 20 additional civilians.

The United Media Office of al Nayrab later reported that the death toll had risen to five, adding that they were displaced people. It named vicims as Battoual al Ali and Fatima al Ali. And Syria Post said that five civilians died and six were injured when “unidentified planes targeted a building inhabited by displaced people near al Nayrab”.

According to Shaam News, “a huge explosion south of al Nayrab in the northern Idlib countryside left two children dead and dozens of DIPs injured and there are a number missing. The reason for the explosion is not yet known.” A subsequent report provided more detail and attributed the incident to the Coalition: “Activists said the explosion was caused by a Coalition drone targeting a head quarters for Fatah al Sham, south of the town of Nairab, and the nearby civilian areas. The rockets were unique in the strength of their explosiveness and caused devastation 2 km around the area.

“According to the source the explosion caused the martyrdom of three civilians, two children and a woman displaced from rural Aleppo, and wounding more than 15 others, mostly children, who were living in the poultry farms and residential buildings near the targeted site”.

Orient News, which also blamed the Coalition, reported: “Local sources reported that the bombing targeted a former poultry farm now inhabited by a population of displaced people near the town.” It added that the Coalition had earlier “targeted the headquarters of the Al Aqsa army in al Karmid for camp area”.

On March 4th the Coalition confirmed that it was carrying out an assessment into the al Nayrab allegations. On April 30th it concluded: “Jan. 22, 2017, near Nayrab, Syria, via social media report: No Coalition strikes were conducted on that day in the geographic area of the reported civilian casualties. The closest strike to the report of possible civilian casualties was 30 km away.”
