Airwars assessment

An intense barrage of Israeli missiles were fired into Um Alnsar Village, also known as Al Badawiya village, in Northern Gaza. Three missiles penetrated the walls of the Nassar Abu Fares family home, whilst reportedly 25 people were in the living room celebrating Eid al-Fitr, killing at least seven civilians and injuring at least twelve according to multiple sources.

According to several sources, those killed in the attack included; 27 year old Sabreen Nasser Mohammed Abu Dayyeh, her nine month old son Muhammad Salama Abu Dayyeh, and her sisters 25 year old Nisreen Naser Mohammed Abu Qleeq and 17 year old Fawzia Nasser Abu Fares. According to additional sources, a 47 year old woman named Nima Saleh Salama Ayyash was killed in the attack, as well as a 20 year old man named Hashim Mohammed ‘Ayed al-Zugheibi. A number of sources also reported that a woman named Nasreen Nasser Abu Fares was killed, however they did not provide an age, therefore it cannot be ruled out that this is an alternative name for 25 year old Nisreen Naser Mohammed Abu Qleeq.

Palestinian Centre for Human Rights claimed that 25 civilians were injured. Another local source claimed that 15 civilians were injured, whilst another source named some of those injured as; Hussein Muhammad Abu Qaliq who sustained shrapnel injuries to his neck, arm and back, Dia Muhammed Abu Qaliq, Mujahid Hussein Abu Qaliq, Hazem Muhammad Al-Zughaibi, Yazan Hazem Al-Zoughaibi, Mahmoud Abdel Aziz Ishtiwi, and Israa Nasser Abu Fares. Another source reported that two of those injured were children of the Abu Fares Family, named as six year old Hamza and five year old Malak.

B’Tselem provided testimony from Naser Abu Fares, 50, father of 12, who lost three daughters and a grandson in the incident: “On Thursday, 13 May 2021, at around 6:30 P.M., I was sitting at my neighbors’ when suddenly, I heard two shells fall. I didn’t know where they’d landed, but I saw smoke billowing out of my first house. I ran over there quickly with my friends, but before we even got there, a third shell landed right next to us. I went inside the house, but it was full of smoke and dust so I couldn’t see who was hurt. I heard my neighbors say a shell had also landed on the home of our neighbors, the ‘Ayash family. They said Ni’mah ‘Ayash had been killed and that another shell had landed on the street and hit a resident named Hashem a-Zgheibi. I continued searching the house. I found my daughters. Some of them were dismembered. My sons were wounded and there was blood everywhere. When I saw that, I blacked out for a few minutes. The neighbors woke me up, and then I found out that my daughters Sabrin, 27, Nisrin and Fawzeyeh, as well as Sabrin’s nine-month-old son Muhammad Abu Diyah, had been killed. Sabrin doesn’t live with us. She’s married and lives with her husband, but she was visiting us that day. An ambulance came and took everyone to the Indonesian Hospital. I followed them in my car, which had also been damaged in the shelling. On the way, I saw people evacuating their homes because of the shelling and fleeing the area. I barely made it to the hospital. I had to identify my daughters. I asked a doctor where they were, and he led me to a refrigerator to identify them. I searched among the dismembered body parts and clothes in the fridge. A forensic doctor who came there arranged the body parts so I could identify them. It was unbearable. I couldn’t take it, especially when he laid their parts out next to each other so I could identify my daughters and the baby. We buried them the next day, with some relatives and friends in attendance. It wasn’t a regular funeral because everyone was anxious about the airstrikes. It was scary. The bombings didn’t stop. My daughter Israa didn’t come because she was in hospital. She’s still in the ICU. She’s injured in the chest, head, back and leg.  From the hospital, I went with the rest of my family to al-Khalifah School in Beit Lahiya. Our house was in ruins. We had nowhere to go back to, and we were also afraid to go back there. We can’t bear to look at the walls, either. They still have traces of blood and bits of flesh on them. We had a rough time at the school. There was no food or drink, and there were no mattresses. The situation was bad and we couldn’t buy food or drink. We didn’t have any extra clothes, either. The war ended on Friday, and then I rented another house and my family moved there. I never thought something like this would happen to me, that I’d lose my daughters like that.”

Isma’il ‘Ayash al-Khatib, 50, Ni’amah’s brother, also provided testimony: “On Thursday, 13 May 2021, at around 6:30 P.M., I was in my apartment with my mother Hamdiya, 75, my sister Ni’mah, 47, and my married sister Sarah, who was visiting my mother for the holiday. Our neighbors Jamileh a-Zgheibi and her daughter-in-law were at our place, too. They were all sitting in the garden and I was inside. It was the first day of ‘Eid al-Fitr. Suddenly, I heard a series of explosions and saw smoke, dust and flames. I heard screaming and windows shattering. I ran to the garden to see if my mother and sisters were okay, and saw debris on the staircase. I thought it might have been a warning missile, so I got everyone inside quickly. My sister Ni’mah went into my apartment and up the stairs to the first floor. My sister Sarah, the neighbor Jamileh and her daughter-in-law went into my apartment, and I helped my mother come in there, too. Just then, I heard three more explosions in a row. I grabbed some personal documents and we ran out of the house, which collapsed. I went out to the street and saw it was full of rubble and lumps of concrete. I heard screaming and crying and saw injured people lying on the ground. The street was in ruins. It was full of blood and dust and smoke. It was an unbearable sight. There were also ambulances and rescue teams. I ran away, supporting my mother. We walked about a hundred meters until we got to the ambulances. They couldn’t reach the entrance to our house. My mother, my wife and I were taken to the Indonesian Hospital. I didn’t see my sister Ni’mah, and didn’t know what had happened to her. I assumed she’d made it out. I saw my sister Sarah and our neighbor Jamileh and her daughter-in-law running away. I saw that Naser Abu Fares’ house next door was completely destroyed. I saw people trying to extract bodies from the ruins. At the hospital, I looked for my sister Ni’mah. I searched the wards and after an hour and a half, I found her in the refrigerator. She had been killed by shrapnel in the stairwell. I heard Hashem a-Zgheibi, who had been hit by shrapnel from a shell that landed by our front door, was also dead. Later, I heard Naser Abu Fares had lost three of his daughters and his grandson.”

One source reported that in the past Israeli military had warned residents in rural areas to evacuate before operations, but that in this case they were given no warning. According to one source more than 5,000 people, approximately half of whom children, were sheltering in the UNRWA run school located in Beit Lahia´s Mashrou’ neighborhood, the majority of whom were displaced from Umm An-Naser village on May 13 due to the intense barrage of Israeli missiles.

Multiple sources placed the time of the incident at either 6.15pm or 6.30pm.

Airwars assessment

As many as 49 civilians, including up to 18 children, were killed in the deadliest single event of the May 2021 Israeli – Palestinian conflict, which has become informally known as the ‘Wahda Street Massacre’. Dozens more were injured – as many as 50, according to Sana News – in a series of Israeli airstrikes that hit al-Wahda Street in the Rimal district of Gaza City in the early hours of 16th May 2021.

There are a significant number of reports, including media reporting and eyewitness accounts, of the strikes, which destroyed several residential apartment buildings on the street along with the Gaza Labour Ministry, and damaged the Gaza Ministry of Social Development and the offices of Medicins Sans Frontieres. A 5-storey apartment block belonging to the al-Awf family and containing 10 apartments was totally destroyed causing a large number of civilian casualties, according to the Al Mezan Center for Human Rights. Another apartment block, owned by the al-Kulak family, was also destroyed with a significant loss of life.

Civilian deaths in the strikes were extremely high, given the residential nature of the buildings and the timing of the strikes, with a number of sources (Al Mezan, the New York Times, Amnesty International) reporting them as taking place around 1a.m. Various sources report that as many as 23 members of the al-Kulak family were killed in the strike, including up to nine children; and up to 16 members of the al-Ouf family were killed, including as many as six children. B’Tselem reported that 22 members of the al-Kulak family were killed in two adjacent buildings.

Overall death figures from the strike have continued to climb since the event, with further deaths reported until 5 June, as one victim – Diana Ziad Abu al-Ouf al-Yaziji – succumbed to her wounds in hospital.

Fahad al-Haddad, an emergency medicine specialist at al-Shifa hospital in Gaza told the New Arab, a London-based media outlet, that most of the dead brought to the hospital showed no external signs of injuries, meaning they were killed by the rubble that collapsed on them while they were still alive.

The Norwegian Refugee Council has announced that 11 of the children killed in the Wahda Street strikes were engaged in a psycho-social trauma programme run by them, designed to assist children traumatised by conflict violence.

Given the high number of civilian casualties in the strike, there is an extremely significant amount of biographical evidence for those killed and injured available. Among the dead are Dr Ayman Abu al-Awf, who was head of internal medicine, including Covid-19 response, at Al-Shifa Hospital, the largest in the Gaza Strip. Also killed were Dr Moein al-Awl, widely considered Gaza’s top neurologist, and Rajaa al-Awf, a widely-known psychologist and social worker.

One man lost his wife and four children in the strikes. Mr Ishkontana told the New York Times that although it was late at night and even though the feast celebrating the end of Ramadan was over, Dana Ishkontana, 9, and Lana Ishkontana, 5, wanted to dress up in their new holiday outfits. Their uncle, Raed Ishkontana, snapped pictures on his phone while their two brothers, Yahya Ishkontana, 4, and Zain Ishkontana, 2, watched, Mr. Ishkontana recalled. Then he stepped out to get snacks for the family, chocolate candy bars and potato chips. The four children and their mother were killed in an Israeli airstrike. “I wish I never left,” he said. Several other families lost multiple children, including the al-Kolak sisters (Hala (13), Yara (9) and Rula (6)) and the al-Franji siblings (Dima (15), Yazan (13), Amir (9) and Mira (11)).

B’Tselem collected testimonies from four different witnesses about the attack. Azzam al-Kolak, 41, told B’Tselem, “in a single moment, in the blink of an eye, we lost 22 of our loved ones. We are all innocent. We recieved no warning before the strike.. We’re ordinary citizens and aren’y affiliated with any organisations.”

Riyad Ishkuntana, 42, a father of five who lost his wife and four of his children in the incident told B’Tselem, “I saw a strong red flash and then there was another intense tremor. I ran to the children’s room. My wife was already there, getting them out of the room. Suddenly, the building collapsed. It all fell down, the walls, the pillars, the concrete… A few minutes later, I heard Dana and Zein shouting, “Daddy, Daddy”,” I called out to them. I don’t know if they heard me. After a few moments, I couldn’t hear their voices anymore.”

In the testimony of Rami al-Ifrangi, 45, a father of four who lost his wife and children who were staying with his wife’s family that night on Al-Wahda Street, he said he “immeditately ran over to the Abu al-‘Oaf building, where my wife and four children were. I got there in less than a minute. I saw a shocking, unbearable sight. The building and the street were totally destroyed.”

In the fourth testimony, Buthaynah Ibrahim Na’im al-Qumo, 47, a mother of five who lost her husband in the incident told B’Tselem that they had to stay under the rubble for almost three hours.  She spoke of the long-term conditions her children are experiencing after they were both injured in the incident, Khaled’s “condition isn’t good – physically or mentally. He’s scared and stayed at my parents’ house where he feels safer around his uncles. He doesn’t want to turn off the light at night, and he’s also scared to go to the bathroom alone.”

The Israeli military has both admitted to carrying out the strikes and to causing civilian casualties. According to the Wall Street Journal, the Israeli army spokesperson’s office said the strike targeted Hamas’ “underground military infrastructure.” As a result of the strike, “the underground facility collapsed, causing the civilian houses’ foundations above them to collapse as well, leading to unintended casualties.”

The Associated Press reported that Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Conricus, an Israeli military spokesman, called the situation that led to the deaths “abnormal.” He said in one location the airstrikes caused a tunnel to collapse, bringing houses down with it, “and that caused a large amount of civilian casualties, which were not the aim.” Conricus also said that the military was analyzing what happened and “attempting to recalibrate” its ordnance to prevent a reoccurrence.

The New York Times reported that according to Colonel Conricus, on the morning of May 16th, several Israeli aircraft fired 11 missiles along a 200-yard stretch of Al Wahda Street, aiming to destroy a tunnel and command centre beneath it. But while most of the adjacent buildings remained standing, the Al-Ouf family’s building collapsed in what the official described as “a freak event.” The military had not known the exact location of the command centre, nor how far it extended under nearby buildings, Colonel Conricus said. When the bombs exploded deep underground, they unexpectedly dislodged the building’s foundations, he added.

The incident occured at approximately 1:00 am local time.

Airwars assessment

At least two civilians were killed and 15 others were injured in alleged Israeli airstrikes or Syrian regime defensive missiles on the neighborhood of Kafar Sousa in Damascus on February 19, 2023. Up to 13 militants were also killed and others were wounded.

Syrian Arab News Agency, a Syrian regime run news source, reported that as a result of Israeli air aggression against Damascus and its vicinity, five people were killed, including a soldier, and 15 civilians were injured, some in critical condition.

A tweet from @SARASALLOUM963 identified recruiter Axem Esper (M) [non-civilian], doctor Asif Mahmoud (M), and Colonel Amjad Ali (M) [non-civilian] as victims killed by Israeli strikes on Kafar Sousa. Damascus voice also identified two of the victims on Facebook: “Axem Ibrahim Esber,” the personal escort of the commander of the Damascus Center for the Baath Brigades, member of the People’s Assembly, and head of the Al-Wathba Club, Dr. Youssef Hassan Al-Salama.

@SAMSyria0 tweeted that Dr. Asif Mahmoud was a doctor of internal medicine and cardiac diseases.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) put the number of casualties at 15 killed and others wounded, without specifying how many civilians were among the toll. The “Voice of the Capital” website quoted by Al Araby stated that the bodies of at least 10 people were recovered from the damaged building. Orient News added that the strikes resulted in the death of six Iranians, including two high-ranking officers, and the injury of others.

According to @SARASALLOUM963, the building in Kafar Sousa that was subject to Israeli airstrikes was evacuated. SOHR referred to the location of the strikes as “an Iranian area and school” which resulted in the destruction of a building while @maarouf_lilian tweeted that the strikes hit “an operations headquarters and a meeting of Iranian leaders”. However, @obretix who geolocated the incident pointed out where the Iranian School is located but added that the school wasn’t the target.

Syria TV specified that the raids hit a headquarters of the “Iranian Revolutionary Guard” militia in the security square area in Kafar Sousa,  located near the headquarters of “Unit 840” of the “Revolutionary Guard”. Al Araby News also quoted the “Voice of the Capital” website which stated that the building struck in Kafar Sousa belongs to businessman Fadel Balawi, owner of the Al-Fadhel Money Transfer Company linked to the Lebanese “Hezbollah.” The car garage and rooms under the building’s floor sustained the most damage.

Shaam News reported that according to some Hebrew language media, the bombing of Kafar Sousa may have been caused by “Syrian surface-to-air missiles, not Israeli missiles” while other sources refer to senior figures who were intentionally targeted in the Israeli strikes in Kafar Sousa.

The incident occured at 00:22:00 local time.

The victims were named as:

Asif Mahmoud

Youssef Hassan Al-Salama

Airwars assessment

At least 10 members of the Shamlakh family, including three children, were reportedly killed when an alleged Israeli aircraft bombed their home on Street 10, south of Gaza City, on October 8th, 2023. The strike is believed to have occurred at approximately 8:30pm.

Grandfather Abdulnaser Asaad Shamlakh was 56 years old, and was reportedly killed together with his wife, 47-year old Soha Jawan al-Saftawi. Their son, Ahmed Abdel Nasser Shamlakh, 25, and his wife, Warda Khamis Jibril, 21 were also killed. They had two children: two-year-old Abdulnaser Shamlakh, and an infant, Omar Shamlakh, who has been reported as either three or five months old. Abdulnaser and Soha had four other sons killed in the bombing. Marwan Shamlakh was 22. His brother Assad Shamlakh was 20. Mohammed Shamlakh was 18. The youngest, Yazan Shamlakh, was 10. All were killed in the strike.

Several sources described Assad Shamlakh as a freelance journalist killed in his home with nine other members of his family, in Sheikh Ijlin.

Several other sources alleged that twelve people had been killed, though it is unclear who these other two civilians were. No other names have been recorded.

The Palestine chapter of Defense for Children International claimed Israeli forces had fired “several missiles” at the building. Aawsat_News (@aawsat_News), quoting the governmental media office, maintained that the aircraft bombed the home “without warning.”

The home, located in the Sheikh Ajlin neighborhood, consisted of two floors containing four apartments. It housed three families.

The funeral for the family is believed to have taken place the next day, on October 9th, 2023. According to Jacobin, “Shamlakh’s family is one of now dozens of cases of Israeli bombing wiping out not just entire families, but entire family bloodlines.”

Airwars has been able to match all the names of those identified with names listed in the Palestinian Ministry of Health list of nearly 7000 victims’ names and ID numbers released on October 26th.

Where sources identified the belligerent, all sources attributed the strikes to Israeli forces.

Due to the scale and urgency of Airwars’ assessment process, all images have been automatically uploaded to each assessment with the graphic filter applied to protect users. We have also included all images identified from the sources, which may also include any imagery of combatants.

Airwars assessment

On October 12th 2023, at least 11 civilians were reportedly killed, with 15 others injured, in an alleged Israeli airstrike on the Al-Zari’i family home on Al-Nakhil Street in Deir Al-Balah, located in the central Gaza Strip.

All 11 of the victims have been identified, including seven members across multiple generations of the Al-Zari’i family. Hajjaj Al-Zari’i (84 years old) was killed alongside his four sons Walid Al-Zari’i (50 years old), Ihsan Al-Zari’i, Osama Al-Zari’i (47 years old) and Saeed Al-Zari’i (43 years old), were killed in the airstrike. Ihsan’s son Hajjaj Al-Zari’i was also killed. In addition, Osama Al-Zari’i’s son Muhammad Al-Zari’i (7 years old), has also been identified in the aftermath of the strike. Abd Alrahim K Alzraiee provided the list of his family members killed, referring to Ihsan’s son Hajjaj Al-Zari’i as a child, and describing him as “my nephew, the hero”.

Muhammad Hamdan Al-Buhaisi (Abu Mahmoud) was also killed in the strike alongside his son, Hamdan Muhammad Al-Buhaisi (33 years old), and Hamdan’s two-year-old daughter, Nour Hamdan Al-Buhaisi. Several family relatives have paid tribute to Muhammad and his children on Facebook, with Abd Alrahim K Alzraiee referring to his friend Hamdan who was killed with his “daughters”. Hidaya Albuhisi posted a memorial for their “dear cousin, the wise and generous, and the great historian Abu Mahmoud” Muhammad Hamdan Al-Buhaisi. Mohammed AL Bohisi named aunt Itidal Othman Al-Buhaisi, Mahmoud Hamdan Al-Buhaisi, his sons and his nephews as among the injured.

In a series of Facebook posts from friends and family, Izz El-Din Younis Ahmed Najib Madi (30 years old) was also killed in the strike. Alaa Abu Jame posted about their sister’s husband Izz El-Din’s death, describing it as “I swear I don’t believe it”. Mahmud Hassan wrote in their memorial for their uncle Izz El-Din “The eyes shed tears and the heart grieves, and we are saddened by your departure”.

According to Wafa News, the home that was bombed belonged to Walid Al-Zari’i and was located on Al-Nakhil Street, while Maali Mohammad Abu Samra referred to the home as belonging to Saeed Al-Zari’i.

Most sources on the incident refer to a complex rescue operation to recover the civilians, with others injured from the incident. A Facebook Post from Mahmoud Mohammad Abu Saleh identified 15 injured civilians.

Where possible, Airwars has found named civilians among the Palestinian Ministry of Health list of names published on October 26th.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Airwars assessment

On Wednesday, October 11th 2023, an alleged Israeli airstrike hit the Abu Shab family house in the town of Khan Yunis, killing eight family members, including five women and three children, and injuring up to 15 other civilians. The owner of the house, Omar Abu Shab Abu Rifaat, was severely injured and remained in intensive care as of the 11th October. This incident is closely connected to another incident, ISPT0124, which reflects civilian fatalities in a neighbouring house in a strike on the same day.

A 43-year old Hala Suleiman Awadallah Abu Shab (Shabab) was killed together with her daughters, 20-year old Rana Raif Salman Abu Shab (Shabab) and 23-year old Shaima Raif Salman Abu Shab (Shabab), as well as Shaima’s small daughter. Other victims included 23-year old Alaa Omar Suleiman Abu Shab (Shabab), as well as the wife of Rifaat Omar Salman Abu Shab (her name was not indicated in testimonies), and her children, a one-year old son Amir Rifaat Omar Salman Abu Shab (Shabab) and a three-year old girl Nagham Refaat Omar Salman Abu Shab (Shabab). Mahmoud Abu Rahma posted pictures of these two small children who lost their lives in the attack on Facebook.

The victims’ relatives and friends – Fadi Abu Khater, Om Fathi Abu Shab, Dahir ABu Shab, and Mamhmoud Saqr mourned the death of their loved ones in the testimonies on Facebook. Rakab family expressed its deepest condolensces to its neighbours, Abu Shab family.

Describing the attack on the two family houses (Abu Shab and Al-Agha, the latter described in another incident – ISPT0124), the Shehab Agency correspondent wrote about up to 15 injured civilians, but later the Wafa agency reported about “injury of dozens”.

Airwars recorded the identified victims members of Al-Agha family in another incident, coded as ISPT0124. Though, as some sources only provided a total number of victims from both family houses, there might be some overlap between the estimated number of civilians injured recorded in this incident and in ISP0124. Airwars will update both assessments once new information is available.

Where possible, names have been matched with the Palestinian Ministry of Health list of fatalities in Gaza released on October 26th, 2023.

Where a belligerent was identified, sources attributed the strike to Israeli forces. Sources report that the airstrike occurred without warning.

Due to the scale and urgency of Airwars’ assessment process, all images have been automatically uploaded to each assessment with the graphic filter applied to protect users. We have also included all images identified from the sources, which may also include any imagery of combatants.

The local time of the incident is unknown.
