Airwars assessment

At least four people, including two women and between one to two children, were killed and 15 others, including seven children and three women, were injured in alleged Israeli airstrikes on the Al Jenina neighborhood in Rafah on May 13th, 2021. Only one of the victims, a man that was killed, was identified to be a belligerent.

According to Al Mezan, at approximately 8:20pm, “Israel’s air force fired a missile, without warning, at a three-story house in Al Jenina neighborhood that belongs to four families. In addition to two-year-old Ibrahim Mohammed Al-Rantisi, the airstrike killed his grandmother, Siham Yusuf Azara (Al-Rantisi), 66, his uncle, Raed Ibrahim Azara (Al-Rantisi), 29, and Raed’s 21-year-old wife, Shaima Diab Musa. Fifteen others, including seven children and three women, were injured.

B’Tselem collected testimony from ‘Iz a-Din a-Rantisi, 24, who lost four family members in the incident: “On Thursday, 13 May 2021, at around 8:00 P.M., I was in my apartment with my brother Muhammad. Suddenly, I heard a missile whistling. I felt a tremor and was thrown in the air. Muhammad, who was standing next to me, flew and fell on some debris. More rubble fell on him. I stayed put for a few minutes until the debris, glass and stones stopped falling. When I got to my feet, I saw our building was still standing, but the missile had gone through the ceiling and landed on the ground floor. I went down the stairs, which were covered in debris but were still standing. When I got to the ground floor, I saw my brother Yusef at the entrance to his apartment, covered in dust and smoke. I started shouting and calling for people to come save my family and get the wounded out from under the rubble. Some more people came. We looked behind the house to see if there was anyone wounded there. We searched with flashlights, because there was no electricity. I found Shaimaa, my brother Raed’s wife. She was dead. We pulled her out from under the rubble. We kept looking and found Aya, my brother Muhammad’s wife. The shock wave had blown her into the house of our neighbors, the al-Hamaydah family. She was wounded and was holding her six-month-old baby, Ibrahim Muhammad a-Rantisi. He was dead. We found my mother inside the apartment. She was dead, too. After looking for my brother Raed for two hours, we found him in the neighbors’ house. He was dead, too. He’d been blown about seven meters away from his apartment. We barely managed to save my brother Hamzah, who was under the rubble. We worked for more than two hours to remove the debris that had fallen on my sister-in-law Asmaa, 27, my brother Yusef’s wife. She was trapped under bits of rubble, lumps of concrete and concrete posts. She was moderately injured. The rest of the family, the children and women, had made it out of the building and weren’t hurt.”

Alaraby reported that on the day of the strikes, the wives of the brothers from the Rantisi family gathered at eight o’clock in the evening to celebrate the first day of Eid al-Fitr, they brought food and sweets as part of the celebration. Shortly after they gathered, an Israeli missile struck their two floor home. “The Israeli missile violated the sanctity of our house, and turned our house into rubble, with which bodies, toys, clothes, and bedding were flying,” says Raeda Al-Rantissi, the 45-year-old daughter of Siham, who was killed. She added that “It was a very difficult moment, when everything turned to ashes, the smell of death and gunpowder, toys were scattered, and screams rose due to the tragedy. I could not have imagined that this would happen, although it could not be ruled out that the occupation would target any house in Gaza, the size of the overcrowding in our neighborhood gave us a false sense of safety. How can a place like this be bombed?”

A post from Abdul Baset showed an image of a toy that Ibrahim Mohammed Al-Rantisi was said to be playing with when he was killed. Ibrahim was between six months old and two years old at the time he was killed.

The Palestinian Centre for Human Rights identified the home as being owned by Yousif Ibrahim al-Rantisi (‘Azarah) and his brothers, he added that all of those injured were taken to Abu Yousif al-Najjar Hospital to receive treatment.

A tweet from @ahm_ks90 said three children were pulled from the rubble following the strikes, but did not identify whether they were dead or injured. Paltoday News reported that two children were killed and included very graphic images of the alleged children.

A post from Al Qassam Brigades identified Raed Ibrahim Al-Rantissi as a member of the “Mujahid Qassami”.

All of the sources attributed the strikes to Israeli missiles and @paltimes2015 reported that the strikes had occurred “without warning”.

The incident occured at approximately 8:20 pm local time.

Airwars assessment

Between two to three civilians, including one child, were killed and as many as three civilians were injured in alleged Israeli strikes on the Al-Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza on May 13th 2021.

Two of the fatalities were named by local sources as Ahmed Rami Mahoud Al-Hwairi, 12, and Moayad Tayseer Al-Khateeb, 21.

B’Tselem collected testimony from Muhammad al-Khatib, 29, Muayad’s brother: “On Thursday, 13 May 2021, the first day of ‘Eid al-Fitr, my sister Alaa, 28, came to visit us with her daughter Zahrah, who’s two years old. It was very tense. There were airstrikes all the time, and we were scared because there were lots of drones and we could hear bombing close to al-Bureij Refugee Camp and farther away. Shortly before 3:00 P.M., my brother Muayad went to the grocery store, which is about 40 meters away from our house. He asked Alaa if she needed anything. A few minutes later, I went into my room to rest a little and then, suddenly, the glass windows in the house shattered. The doors cracked and thick dust seeped in. We were all stunned and didn’t understand what was going on. My brother Husam and his wife ran down to the ground floor from their apartment. Everyone was yelling and screaming…I left the house and ran into one of the neighbors. I asked him if he and his kids were okay, and he said he didn’t know how the kids were yet because everything was covered in dust and rubble. I kept walking down the street and saw fire coming out of the Abu ‘Iyada home. It’s under construction, and it’s about 25 meters south of our house. I understood that was the house that had been bombed. I saw flames, black smoke and dust rising from it. It was only then that I saw a person lying on the pavement on the northern side of the street, towards the market. He was about 15 meters away from the bombed house. I started walking towards him and when I was about four meters away, I realized it was my brother Muayad. He was lying on his stomach, face down. His right leg was near his head. He was bleeding from the mouth and from the right side of his body. Before I managed to get to him, there was another strike, in almost exactly the same place. I ran home quickly, without thinking, and told the family Muayad had been killed. Those were very difficult moments. The women cried and screamed. My father went into shock. He only said, “My heart is broken,” and then sat down and started praying to God to have mercy on the martyr and ease our pain and suffering. When things calmed down, the whole family went to my maternal grandfather’s house. He lives close to us. Then my father and I went to Shuhada al-Aqsa Hospital in Deir al-Balah. Ten minutes later, an ambulance brought my brother there. My father stayed sitting in the courtyard, and I went into the morgue to say goodbye to my brother and take one last look at him. We returned to my grandfather’s house and ten minutes later, an ambulance brought Muayad’s body there. We said goodbye to him in my grandfather’s house and buried him….After we buried my brother, we heard that the boy Ahmad al-Hawajri had been killed in the same strike, and that he had also been on his way to the grocery store on the street. Another resident from the neighborhood was badly injured. He suffered burns in various parts of his body, including the face. They say he was walking along the street near the house that was bombed. I visited him in hospital, and he told me he had been on his way to see a friend. Another young guy from the neighborhood suffered a leg injury and was transferred to Egypt for treatment. Seven houses near the one that was bombed were badly damaged. Muayad went to school until grade 12 and then went to work in construction with my father. The whole family relied on him. Anyone who needed anything would ask Muayad. He was also putting some of his salary away to build himself a room and a kitchen and bathroom, above the house, because he wanted to get married and start a family.”

Defence for Children reported that Ahmed Rami Mahoud Al-Hwairi was on his way home from the grocery store when the Israeli forces targeted a residential building in Al-Bureij refugee camp. According to the source, Ahmed was struck in the head by shrapnel and sustained burns all over his body.

Roya News published a statement by the news agency Wafa, identifying Ahmed Rami Mahoud Al-Hwair as an 8th-grade student at the Al-Breij Middle School for Boys.

A local source stated that the airstrikes were conducted without prior warning and that citizens were pulled from the rubble of a house belonging to the Al-Khatib family. A tweet from @paltimes2015 asserted that the attack targeted the home of the Al-Khatib family, local sources reported that the family home was destroyed and nearby houses damaged. Contradicting this reporting, Al Mezan news said two missiles struck the house of Ghasan Abdulmuti Abu Eyada destroying it and damaging surrounding houses.

The Palestinian Centre for Human Rights added that all casualties of the incident were taken to the al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir Al-Balah.

Palestinian National Liberation Movement Fatah Al-Wusta Region posted a memorial for Moayad Tayseer Al-Khateeb on their Facebook page. They did not specifically identify him as a member of the organization.

The Anadolu Agency reported that the strikes by Israeli warplanes also attacked a government post office building.

Al-Mayadeen reported that there were “many casualties” following strikes on Al-Bureij but did not specify which incident they could be attributed to.

The strike occoured at 3:20 pm local time.

The incident occured at approximately 3:20 pm local time.

The victims were named as:

Airwars assessment

At least one civilian was killed and three others, including a child, were injured in alleged Israeli strikes on Al-Sha’af Street in the east of the Al-Tuffah neighborhood on May 12, 2021. Al Qassam Brigades identified that a combatant was also killed in the strike, a “Mujahid Qassami”.

A tweet from @Reemjihad1 identified that “a civilian car was targeted in Al-Sha`f neighborhood, east of #Gaza leading to 1 martyr.” However, El Watan News increased the number to “an elderly man and another citizen were martyred”.

@qudsn named “Izz Al-Din Helles was killed and his father and brother were seriously injured after his car was bombed” and @OmarElQattaa added that “a number of injuries arrived at Al-Shifa Medical Complex”. @palsawa put the number of injured at three.

Al Qassam Brigades confirmed that Izz Al-Din Helles was a member of the militant group in their report which stated “On the path of jihad, life becomes sweeter – Izz Al-Din Muhammad Abdullah Helles.”

According to @A7med_Bulbul, Izz Al-Din was 35 years old and his injured brother is Ashraf. Pal times 2015 posted about “the injury of a 47-year-old man, a resident of Shejaiya, and his 17-year-old son, to the Al-Shifa compound,” which seems to refer to Ashraf and his son. A Facebook post by Welliam.shahwan added that the car struck belonged to Dr. Ashraf Helles and his son was injured along with him and Ezzedine’s father.

Al Mezan gave specific details that “at 2:15pm on 12 May 2021, Israeli air forces fired two missiles onto a car driving down Al-Sha’af Street in the east of the Al-Tuffah neighborhood”.

All of the sources that attributed the strikes to a responsible party identified Israel as carrying out the strikes. The IDF confirmed they carried out this attack, reporting that “15:28 – An IDF aircraft attacked a vehicle carrying a squadron of Hamas terrorist launchers from the Sajaiya Battalion.”

The incident occured at 14:15:00 local time.

Four combatants were killed and one to two other civilians were injured in airstrikes on Al Nusayrat camp on May 12, 2021. The men that were killed were identified as militants by the Islamic Jihad group, who posted a tribute to the “Mujahid martyrs”.

According to Al Jazeera, the four people were killed in Israeli strikes on Al Nusayrat camp. @SafaPs tweeted that three bodies of those killed arrived at Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital and later added that a fourth body arrived at the hospital.

@Tartouri99 tweeted the names of the four killed: Hamza Mahmoud Al-Hour 26, Mohamed Abdel Moneim Shaheen 27, Ahmed Moeen Al-Qeraa 24, Ahmed Walid Al-Talaa. Al Mezan added that two others were moderately injured and that all casualties were residents of Nuseirat refugee camp.

Shorouk News reported the death of three people and the injury of one, referring to those affected by the strikes as “civilians” and @NewPress_en designated those targeted as civilians.

Tweets from @michaelh992 and @Jtruzmah identify the men as being militants. In addition, a report from the Meir Amit Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center, an organization affiliated with the Israeli government, identified Hamza Mahmoud Ibrahim al Hour as being “a military wing operative in an elite unit of the Brigade of the Central Camps” and Mohammad Abd alMoneim Ibrahim Shahin, Mohammad Mu’in Mohammad al-Qaara, and Ahmad Walid Hussein al Talaa as being “military wing operative[s] in the artillery unit of the Brigade of the Central Camps”. Islamic Jihad Movement in Palestine verified these claims in posts memorializing all four men as “Mujahid martyrs”.

@fidaazaanin identified the location of the strikes as occurring near the Ihsan Mosque in Nuseirat and WAFA pointed out that the airplanes targeted a group of people on one of the streets in the camp. Al Mezan put the time of the strike at 6:30pm and reported that an Israeli drone fired one missile into the group.

Airwars assessment

Between one and two civilians were killed and three to four others, including a child, were injured in alleged Israeli airstrikes on Al-Nazzaz Street in eastern Shujayya on May 12, 2021.

A tweet from @PalinfoAr reported: “two martyrs and 4 injured as a result of the Israeli bombing of a house for the Al-Naasan family in Al-Nazzaz Street”. However, @5br3ajel referred to the home as “belonging to the Abu Sakran family”.

@cuttietete put the toll from the bombing at “a martyr and 3 injured”.

@ibrahimalwadia named two of those killed: Ahmed Ibrahim Abu Sakran and Muhammad Nahed Abu Sakran.

B’Tselem collected testimony from Ibrahim Abu Sakran, 26, Ahmad’s son and Muhammad’s cousin: On 12 May 2021, I was sitting at the entrance to our house on a-Nizar Street in the neighborhood of a-Shuja’iyeh, talking with two friends – my cousin, Muhammad Nahed Abu Sakran, and my nephew, Muhammad Hashem Abu Sakran. The power was out and everything was dark. At around 8:30 P.M., my dad came out of the house and asked us to come inside so we wouldn’t get hurt. Just then, I heard a very loud explosion and the place filled with smoke and dust. I didn’t move. I heard parts of the building fall near us. A minute later, I saw Muhammad Nahed and Muhammad Hashem. They were lying on top of each other, bleeding. I got up and saw that I’d also hit been by shrapnel in the leg and chest. I looked behind me and saw my dad lying on the floor inside, covered in shrapnel and blood. He was drawing his last breaths. I tried to pick him up, but I was too badly injured. I called out to my brothers, who were inside the house. They picked me up and gave the wounded people first aid. Some neighbors took them away in their cars. After about 10 minutes, an ambulance arrived and I was put inside. I blacked out in the ambulance and woke up at a-Shifaa Hospital. I was X-rayed and they found shrapnel in my legs and chest. They also found a tear in my auditory nerve and a perforation in my right ear. I still can’t hear properly. At the hospital I asked after my father, my cousin and my nephew. The doctors told me they were okay and were being treated in the ER. I was sure they’d all been killed because they were so badly injured. During the bombing, I’d seen them looking at me, but they hadn’t been able to speak. About half an hour later, the doctors told that me that my father and Muhammad Nahed had been killed. I started shouting and blacked out. When I woke up, I got up because I wanted to see my father. Even though I was injured, I had to see him. But the doctors wouldn’t let me go because they weren’t done treating me. I went home that night because I couldn’t stand staying at the hospital. I wanted to be with my mother and sisters and the rest of the family. The next day, they brought my father and Muhammad Nahel in so we could say goodbye to them. A lot of people came. I cried when I saw them. I couldn’t hug them because of my condition. I said goodbye only by looking at them from afar.”

Fatah issued a statement mourning Ahmed and Muhammad Sakran but did not identify them as members of any groups.

Al Mezan gave details that “At 7:25pm, Israeli air forces fired one missile at the entrance of the house of Ahmad Ibrahim Ahmed Abu Al-Sakran, 64, on Al-Nazzaz Street in eastern Shujayya in the east of Gaza City. The attack coincided with the assembly of a group of people near the targeted house as they awaited the call to prayer to break their fast. The owner, Ahmad, was killed in the attack, as was Mohammed Nahed Jaber Abu Al-Sakran, 24. Ali Hisham Ahmed Abu Al-Sakran, 8, was also reportedly critically injured in the attack.

A post from Mosab Jamal Abo Sakran on Facebook added that the strikes were carried out “without warning”.

All of the sources that attributed the strikes to Israeli forces.

The incident occured at 19:25:00 local time.
