On April 5th 2011, two civilians were reported killed and 26 injured as a result of artillery shelling by Gaddafi forces on the city of Misurata. The bombing was said to have started at 10am.

According to Al Jazeera, “A Libyan rebel said today, Wednesday, that two people were killed and 26 wounded in artillery shelling launched by the security brigades loyal to Colonel Muammar Gaddafi on the city of Misrata.”

Another rebel man said, “The pro-Gaddafi forces bombed Misrata, but the bombing has now stopped … The attacks were mainly around the port and the Tripoli Street area near the city centre.”

The man, Abd al-Salam, said in a phone call to Reuters that Misrata was bombed by tanks, artillery and mortar shells, mainly in Tripoli Street and the Mina area, noting that the bombing began at ten in the morning yesterday and stopped at five in the afternoon the same day.

On September 7th, 2011 NATO forces bombed the Al Tes’seen near Sirte, killing a 60 year old woman and injuring two children, a four year old girl and nine year old boy. Another unnamed woman was shown on video in the hospital, but it was unclear if she had died as a result of the strikes.

The woman killed was named as Saada al-Zayani, who died during surgery from injuries due to the bombing. The four year old girl was injured in the chest, while the nine year old boy suffered injuries to his right leg.

Nour Al Din Nasser Al Zanki reported the names, while a Surt Son video, dated on September 7th, showed the unnamed woman.

NATO reported hitting “5 Armoured Fighting Vehicles, 2 Armed Vehicles” in Sirte on that day.

On February 23rd, 2011, seven civilians were killed by the 32nd Brigade in the central square of Al Zawiyah. A UN report mentioned the shooting of seven unarmed civilians.

The report states “The Commission found local authorities exercised initial restraint when engaging protesters in the central square in Al Zawiyah. The Commission determined a violent response began after the 32nd Brigade arrived on 23 February 2011 and shot at unarmed protesters, killing seven, and prompting an escalation of violence on both sides.”

At least two men died from injuries they sustained after being detained by rebel forces at Judayem detention centre and later died in Al Zawiyah Hospital on October 9, 2011 according to UN Report Source Page 81.

Both men were arrested on September 17, 2011 in Al Zawiyah by rebel forces and taken to Judaism detention centre. One of the men was seen by a witness being beaten in custody, was briefly released on October 8, 2011 but was rearrested just hours later and the following morning his family was informed he died at Al Zawiyah Hospital with many visible injuries. The second man was brought to Al Zawiyah Hospital in a coma and died shortly after, with various injuries consistent with torture.

Between one and 14 civilians were allegedly killed by Gaddafi forces shelling on Misurata.

An Amnesty International investigation found the following: “Ahmed Ahmed al-Majdoub, a 64-year-old father of 10, was killed on 25 April at his daughter’s house in the Qasr Ahmad neighbourhood of Misratah, to the west of the port.”

The investigation quotes al-Majdoub’s son as saying: “After lunch everybody left and my father and my brother Fathallah stayed there. There had been many rockets that morning in the area but most of them fell into the sea or near the sea. At about 2.30pm a rocket struck near the house. I rushed over and found my father in pieces. One leg was completely severed and the other leg and one arm were only hanging by a thread and he was cut all over. He died almost immediately. My brother Fathallah had shrapnel injuries all over his body and was later evacuated by a humanitarian boat to a hospital in Benghazi.”

Reuters said at the time of the attack: “Speaking to Reuters by telephone, Muhammad Ibrahim, a resident of the city who visited its hospital on Monday, said that seven of those killed on Monday were civilians and three opposition fighters.

Three bodies were charred to the point of difficult identification due to the bombing on Sunday night. A ten-year-old child was killed in his sleep. But residents said that many shells fell in empty lands. They added that the bombing stopped when NATO warplanes flew overhead.”

Al Jazeera also reported on the event: “Press sources in Misrata: 14 people were killed and 25 wounded in the Qadhafi Brigades’ bombing of the city today”

On May 27th, 2011, rocket strikes from Gaddafi forces in the Dafiniyah area of Misurata were said to have killed one reporter and six rebels, as well as injuring 25 other rebels.

Multiple sources described the reporter as Mohammad Al Ma’dani, a journalist who had documented the rebel groups.

Tawasul MC said: “25 wounded and the death of 7 of them, the media figure (Muhammad Al-Ma’dani) today at noon in the Al-Dafniyah area in Misurata.”
