Airwars assessment

Up to seven women allegedly died in an airstrike on al Taybeh, according to a local media outlet. However the deaths had previously been reported on July 28th.

Three women died in an airstrike on al Taybeh, according to Deir Ezzor 24. Though its source didn’t say who was responsible, they listed three victims.

However, Majles Ahrar Mayadeen had reported the same deaths on July 28th, noting that “Coalition aircraft bombard the house of Majer al-Atish, Bandar al-Atish and Saleh al-Dakhil during Friday prayers, resulting in the deaths of the wife of Majer Al-Atish, two of the daughters of Majer, four women from the Bandar al-Atish family.”

Airwars assessment

In an incident not previously tracked by Airwars, the Coalition later confirmed the injury of a civilian in an event near Al Asharah, Syria.

Their December 2017 civilian casualty report noted: “During a Coalition strike which destroyed ISIS vehicle and equipment it was assessed that one civilian was unintentionally injured.”

In July 2019, the Coalition provided Airwars with the location of this incident, accurate to within a 100 metre box.

At least six civilians from one family reportedly died in alleged US-led Coalition airstrikes on Al Rumaila neighbourhood, Raqqah city. Marsad Al Hasaka named six of the victims and listed the mother of the victims listed belowand another unknown child.

Quoting Al-Shibli, Al Fayha reported that “the shelling focused on the “expansionist and Bedouin neighborhoods” inside the city, targeting the perimeter of the municipal stadium, and pointing out the presence of more than ten thousand civilians still trapped inside the city along with the interruption of electricity, water, vegetables and milk for the children from the city, which has been in a siege of suffocating for nearly four months”. Al Fahya also reported that eleven family members in total died.

All sources alleged the US-led Coalition was responsible for the attack on Al Rumaila and the resultant loss of civilian life.

Three civilians died in an alleged Coalition airstrike on Raqqah, according to Raqqah is Being Slaughtered Silently.

The source reported the deaths on October 25th but didn’t say when the victims were reportedly killed.

The Syrian Human Rights Committee also reported that the victims had been killed in a Coalition strike, but again didn’t say when they were killed. The last reported Coalition action in the city was on October 16th, with victory over ISIS declared by the SDF the following day.

Several civilians – including a woman and a child – reportedly died in an airstrike on al Sayyal, according to local media – though sources were conflicted as to whether this was the work of the US-led Coalition or Russia.

Al Hall pointed towards the Coalition, putting the death toll at two with nine more wounded.

According to the Our Bukamal facebook page, “warplanes targeted the eastern town of Sayyal this morning targeting the homes of al A’war killed the wife of Mohammad al Abboud al A’war and his sister and a child”.

However, Baladi attributed the event to Russia, reporting the death of “a woman and her daughter”.

Up to 24 civilians died in an airstrike on Al Jarthi town, local media reported – though it was unclear whether the Coalition, Russia or the Syrian regime were responsible. The majority of sources, however, attributed the event to Moscow.

According to Al Haal, “Abu Hassan al-Khalifa (a resident of the town) told al-Hal, that the Russian warplanes targeted the two towns of Al Jarthi Al Sharqi [Eastern] and Al Jarthi al Gharbi [Western], with more than 9 raids, killing 17 civilians, mostly women and children, wounding more than 20 others.”

Al Jisr TV, citing local sources, reported that “[Russian] fighters targeted with rockets a residential complex, and then returned to target a car that tried to aid the wounded”.

The Syrian Network for Human Rights was alone in blaming the Coalition, putting the number killed at “at least 7 civilians, including 2 children and a woman”.

According to the Euphrates Post, “there were more than 15 martyrs and a number of wounded as a result of military aircraft targeting the town of al-Jarthi al-Sharqi [al Jarthi East]. A van carrying civilians in Al Jarthi al Gharbi [al Jarthi West] was struck last night [Dec 5th]. Most of the victims are from the town of al-Duyer, including the family of Ali al-Shakil al-Hamad. The father, son and grandfather died, in addition to three people from al Jarthi itself.

Step News Agency blamed Russia, initially putting the death toll at 14. It later said that the number killed had risen to 23, of which 13 were from one family. It added that “dozens more” were injured. 

The Syrian Observatory also pointed towards Russia, initially reporting that 14 people died including six children and women, with 10 more wounded, “during Russia’s support of operations by the SDF east of the Euphrates River”. A further report by the Observatory said that the death toll had risen to 24, of which 10 were children and four were women.

The Smart News Agency also said that the strikes were “likely” Russian.

Qasioun appeared to blame the regime, putting the death toll at 20 with another 30 wounded.

On March 10, 2022 in the CJTF-OIR Civilian Casualty Report, the Coalition reported this incident to be “non-credible”, stating that “After review of all available evidence it was determined that more likely than not civilian casualties did not occur as a result of a Coalition strike.”

Reports of the incident mention a building in the village of Al Jarthi al Sharqi (الجردي الشرقي), for which the coordinates are: 34.8687930, 40.6480229. Satellite imagery analysis geolocated the image of a destroyed house posted on social media by Euphrates Post. Before (Dec. 03, 2017) and after (Dec. 26, 2017) images showed visible structural damage. Airwars does not have the rights to publish the images. Airwars assessment

There were reports that two civilians were killed and two injured by airstrikes in Al Mikhisa village, east of the Abu Sayda district. Local sources told Airwars that two of the deceased civilians may have been farmers.

All reports mentioned that airstrikes targeted the “orchards” or “the farms” in the village. None however provided any information on the culprit.

According to Alebaa TV, the head of the security committee in the Abu Saida district council stated instead that four “criminal elements” from Fallujah had been killed and wounded by “an intensive aerial bombardment” in the eastern part of the area.

Al Bawabh News later quoted the same head of the security committee who stated that “the so-called military prince of the Daesh organization in the Waqf basin was killed from wounds” that were a result of an air raid “near the orchards of Al-Mukhisa”.

The US-led Coalition later denied responsibility for any civilian harm, noting in October 2018 that “The [Airwars] report contains insufficient information of the time, location and details to assess its credibility.”

Airwars assessment

Local sources reported that alleged Coalition airstrikes hit the village of al Sha’afa, either killing two civilians or injuring “several”.

According to Al Haal shelling by the “International Air Force […] focused on the side of the river” and resulted in “several civilians injured, in addition to material damage.”

Step News also identified the US-led Coalition as the culprit and reported that a house in Al Sha’afa was shelled, killing two people.

Deir Ezzor24 tweeted a video, stating that it showed the “great destruction in the homes of # civilians caused by the bombing of warplanes on the town of # al Shaafa # Rural Deiralzur”. It did not however make mention of any casualties as a result of the bombardment.

The Coalition at the time publicly reported no strikes in Syria on this date.

In the first of their September 2020 civilian casualty reports, the US-led Coalition assessed reports that they were responsible for civilian harm in this strike as “non-credible”, stating that no Coalition actions were conducted in the geographical area at that time.
