Airwars assessment

One adult civilian male was reported killed in a fresh Coalition strike on the besieged city.

According to Manbij Direct, “Mohammad bin Ahmad Khaled al Othman died in coalition raids a few hours ago inside the city of Manbij. He is a civilian who doesn’t belong to any faction. Today the city of manbij has seen more than 10 raids by the coalition on different areas in the city.”

In the second of their March 2020 civilian casualty reports, the US-led Coalition assessed reports that they were responsible for civilian harm in this strike as “non-credible”, stating that the allegation provided insufficient information on the timing and location of the strike to make a determination.

Airwars assessment

One person was reported killed in an alleged Coalition strike on al Qata – though it was not clear whether they were a civilian or a combatant.

According to the Syrian Observatory, “warplanes believed to be affiliated to the International coalition targeted places in the desert of the town of Qata eastern Deir Ezzor, which resulted in the death of at least one person.”

On March 4th the Coalition said it was assessing an event “near Dayr Az Zayr, Syria, via self-report.” Two months later officials confirmed that “that one civilian was unintentionally killed when he entered the target area after the munition was released.” The provided location – 37SFU 42967 39806 – lies equidistant between al Qata and Sbeikhan and it is our present assessment that these are most likely the same event.

One civilian doctor died and several others were injured in an alleged Coalition airstrike on Al Ahwas village, according to local sources.

Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently reported that “Abdallah A’fadli was killed following coalition raids on al Ahwas village”. VDC also named him as a victim.

Fourat al Wafa also blamed the Coalition and named “Dr. Abdallah Afadli” as a victim.

According to Al Manar, “a doctor was killed after Coalition aircraft targeted his clinic in Al Ahwas”.

‘Sunday 12 March – Tornados bombed a large Daesh headquarters in Syria, just south of Raqqa, while Typhoons destroyed a Mosul strongpoint…On Sunday 12 March, Tornados armed with Enhanced Paveway II weapons conducted a carefully planned strike on a large Daesh headquarters in Syria, situated a couple of miles south of Raqqa. The attack had to be delivered through heavy cloud, but both of the target buildings were destroyed by direct hits. Support to the Mosul operation also continued, with Typhoons demolishing a strong-point which the Iraqi forces had encountered during their advance.’

In an incident not previously tracked by Airwars, the Coalition later confirmed the death of a civilian in an event near Mosul.

Their June 2017 civilian casualty report noted: “During a strike on ISIS fighters in a moving vehicle, it was assessed that one civilian pedestrian was unintentionally killed when the vehicle was struck.”

The Coalition provided Airwars with the location of this incident, accurate to within a one metre box.

Reports said that the al Sabahiya mosque was struck, with all sources blaming the US-led Coalition.

According, to RFS, “The shelling focused on the neighbourhoods of al-Sabahia and al-Jazra, west of al-Raqqa and the al-Mashlab neighbourhood east of it, killing civilians in al-Sabahiya district”. Al Hassaka Rasd named one victim as “the young man, Ahmad Othman, from the Euphrates”.

A civilian male was reportedly killed following artillery strikes on February 23 Street, Raqqa, likely carried out by US forces.

A number of local sources named the victim as Ahmad Tarad al Khalifa al Haj. Abdulsalam Farij, a relative of the deceased, said via Facebook that the man died as a result of being wounded by shrapnel.

Mohab Nasser of Tabaqa Media Center and Al Raqqa Truth also shared images of the damage from the artillery strikes, reportedly showing the house of Muhammed al Darwish on February 23 Street next to the Al Salam hospital.

For June 13th-14th, the Coalition reported: “Near Raqqah, 20 strikes engaged 14 ISIS tactical units; destroyed 12 fighting positions, five vehicles, five ISIS boats, two VBIEDs, a recoilless rifle, a command and control node, and a tunnel; and suppressed an ISIS tactical unit.” It additionally reported that “On June 13, near Raqqah, Syria, 10 strikes engaged four ISIS tactical units and a sniper and destroyed a fighting position, a tunnel, an ISIS headquarters, a weapons cache, a vehicle, and a VBIED.”
For June 14th-15th, the Coalition reported: “Near Raqqah, 11 strikes engaged eight ISIS tactical units; destroyed nine fighting positions, three ISIS boats, and a vehicle; and suppressed an ISIS tactical unit.”

"In the past week, France reports his 31 sorties, 28 of which were Armed Reconnaissance or Ground Support (CAS) and 3 were intelligence gathering. Two strikes were conducted by French planes in Iraq and Syria, one in the west of Raqqah city, and the other in the Al Qaim region, both against ISIL fighters. Task Force Wagram carried out 80 artillery strikes in Mosul."
