‘Sunday 30 April – Typhoons attacked a group of Daesh fighters west of Raqqa, while Tornados destroyed two Daesh buildings in Mosul…Sunday 30 April saw Typhoons once more flying in support of the SDF west of Raqqa, where they struck a group of Daesh fighters along the bank of the Euphrates. The Tornados then flew over Mosul, demolishing two Daesh-held buildings which the Iraqi ground forces had encountered.’

‘SAC and SDF Liberate Tabqah

SOUTHWEST ASIA – The Syrian Arab Coalition and their Syrian Democratic Force partners completed the liberation of the Tabqah Dam, as well as the city of Tabqah and its nearby airfield May 10.

The multi-ethnic SDF forced the surrender of Tabqah Dam and the remainder of Tabqah City, continuing the trend of ISIS’s diminished control of territory and people. The SDF has now further isolated ISIS in Raqqah, the terror group’s stronghold, and will continue to pursue the military defeat of ISIS throughout Syria.

“This is yet another victory by the SAC and the SDF, our most committed and capable ground force partners in the fight against ISIS who remain hard at work erasing ISIS from the battlefield, liberating their own people and lands,” said the Coalition Spokesman, Col. John Dorrian.

In Tabqah, the SDF’s increased pressure on ISIS from each flank allowed it to accelerate the pace of the fight, clear the final neighborhoods of the city, and isolate Tabqah Dam. Approximately 70 ISIS fighters conceded to the SDF’s terms, which included the dismantling of IEDs surrounding the dam, the surrender of all ISIS heavy weapons, and the forced withdrawal of all remaining fighters from Tabqah City.

The SDF accepted ISIS’s surrender of the city to protect innocent civilians and to protect the Tabqah dam infrastructure which hundreds of thousands of Syrians rely on for water, agriculture, and electricity.

The Coalition tracked fleeing fighters and targeted those that could be safely hit without harming civilians.

The SAC and SDF liberation of the ISIS stronghold of Tabqah, an operation that began March 22 with a surprise aerial infiltration behind enemy lines to the south of Lake Assad, severs ISIS’s ability to reinforce Raqqah and denies ISIS a key coordination hub that its foreign terrorist fighters used since 2013 to plan local operations and external attacks against the West.

With its seizure, the coalition has prevented a potential humanitarian disaster and ensured local citizens will continue to receive the dam’s basic services.

After ISIS’s defeat in northern Syria, ISIS moved its foreign fighters and external attack planning operations to Tabqah in order to avoid coalition airstrikes within Raqqah. The operation to seize the Tabqah dam, airfield and city disrupts ISIS operations in Raqqah and their ability to defend the city and plan and execute external attacks against the West.

With Tabqah now liberated and Raqqah further isolated, the Coalition and its partner forces continue to hinder ISIS’s ability to reinforce its self-proclaimed capital in Raqqah, prevented a potential humanitarian disaster, and ensured local citizens will continue to receive the dam’s basic services.

“The SDF’s success against ISIS demonstrates the power of working by, with and through local partner forces fighting ISIS, among their own people, in their own territory” said Dorrian. “The SDF, fighting to liberate their own people and lands, have freed more than 8,000 square kilometers of Syria from ISIS since November.”

‘Wednesday 10 May – Typhoons struck a terrorist mortar team north of Raqqa, Syria, while Tornados attacked a sniper team and another Daesh position in Mosul…The following day [May 10th], Typhoons also patrolled over Syria, and successfully struck a Daesh mortar team that was firing on Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) some five miles north of Raqqa. Tornados also operated over western Mosul, where they used a Brimstone missile to silence a sniper team which had opened fire on Iraqi troops, and used a Paveway IV against a Daesh-held building.

Between five and nine civilians, including two women and up to seven children, were killed – and up to 45 others were wounded – in alleged Coalition airstrikes in the Shaneina refugee camp to the north of Raqqa city.

Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently (RBSS) reported that 14-year-old Abdullah Mohammed al Fayad, Abu Zuhri, his wife and his child were among the dead.

Euphrates Post reported that Hassan al Madawar, his wife and his child were also killed in the alleged airstrikes.

Both sources also reported that one civilian had to have his legs amputated as a result of being injured in the airstrikes.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights added that a 14-year-old boy was killed in the alleged airstrikes, but did not name the victim. It is not clear whether that victim was Abdullah Mohammed al Fayad as named by RBSS or another child. RBSS also reported that al Fayad’s entire family and “the whole family of Hanzal” were injured in the strikes.

The Syrian Network for Human Rights also blamed the Coalition and put the death toll at five including three children and one woman.

Qasioun, who also blamed the Coalition, put the death toll at nine with 23 more wounded.

However, AlJazeera, pointed towards “an aerial bombardment and US artillery”, reporting the death of nine children and injury of 45 more civilians – “mostly children and women”.

A further victim was named as Hiyam Mohammad al Fayyad by Al Raqqa Truth, which reported that he died from injuries sustained in the event.

Seven civilians from the Al-Mashhoud family died in a casualty event at Rawda Farm – near the old mosque area – though reports were conflicted as to whether they were killed by US-led Coalition airstrikes or shelling by the SDF or US.

According to Alaraby, “local sources told Al-Arab Al-Jadeed that seven civilians from the Al-Mashhoud family were killed by an international coalition air strike targeting their home at Al-Rawda farm north of Raqqa city.” According to the Syrian Observatory, “the casualties are a man and two of his sons and one of them was killed with 4 of his children, also the shelling injured several others.”

Radio Alkul poiinted only to the SDF, reporting that “seven civilians from one family were killed by shelling of the Syrian Democratic Forces militia on Mazra’at al-Rawda, north of al-Raqqa”. Some others sources blamed both the Coalition and the SDF.

Geolocation notes

Reports of the incident mention the area of the “Old Mosque” (الجامع القديم) in the city of Raqqa (الرقة). The generic coordinates for the mosque are: 35.951997, 39.021030. Due to limited satellite imagery and information available to Airwars, we were unable to verify the location further.

For May 29th-30th, the Coalition publicly reported: “Near Raqqah, 11 strikes engaged nine ISIS tactical units and destroyed five vehicles, a tunnel, a mortar system, a weapons cache, a VBIED factory and a fighting position.” It was additionally reported for May 29th that “Near Raqqah, Syria, four strikes destroyed three ISIS-held buildings, two VBIEDs, and a weapons cache.”
For May 30th-31st, the Coalition reported: "Near Raqqah, four strikes engaged four ISIS tactical units and destroyed a fighting position and a VBIED. For May 30th, it added that "Near Raqqah, Syria, a strike destroyed an ISIS command and control node."

Airwars assessment

In an incident not previously tracked by Airwars, on January 25th the Coalition said it had concluded an assessment on claims of civilian harm “near Dar’iya, Raqqah” via an “international organization report”. According to the Coalition report, “69. June 8, 2017 near Dari’ya, Raqqah, Syria via international organization report. After a review of available information, it was assessed that no Coalition strikes were conducted in the geographical area that corresponds to the report of civilian casualties.”

The Coalition shared the military coordinates with Airwars: 37SDV9832877959. This corresponds with al-Qadisiyyah in Raqqa.

No additional information is presently known.

For June 7th-8th: “Near Raqqah, 22 strikes engaged 16 ISIS tactical units and destroyed 12 fighting positions, three vehicles, two ISIS staging areas, an ISIS excavator, an ISIS weapons cache, and an ISIS training camp.” It also added that “On June 7, near Raqqah, Syria, one strike destroyed six fighting positions and suppressed an ISIS tactical unit.” And that “On June 7, near Raqqah, Syria, one strike destroyed an ISIS minefield.”

For June 8th-9th, the Coalition reported: “Near Raqqah, nine strikes engaged eight ISIS tactical units and destroyed six fighting positions, three vehicles and a mortar system.“
