Airwars assessment

Between three and four civilians were killed and up to five others were injured in alleged Russian or regime artillery strikes on February 16, 2022.

According to the Syrian Civil Defense, four civilians were killed and two others were injured in artillery shelling of a fuel market and the outskirts of the widow camp near the town of Tarmanin. The shelling caused large fires and the White Helmets worked to put out the fires and search for survivors – the rescue efforts took four continuous hours and required the participation of 10 firefighting teams.

A tweet from @ShahbaPress identified the four victims killed in the strikes as being members of one family, including two brothers. Euphrates Post named three of the civilians killed: Ahmed Hajj Hussein Fakher, Khaled Hajj Hussein Fakher, Fahd Ahmed Shahoud from Sarmin City. The source added that the fourth person could not be identified because their body was charred.

Syrian Observatory for Human Rights put the number of civilians killed at “at least three people” and that the number of deaths was likely to rise. Zaman Al Wasl reported that five people were injured, with some of them from the same family. Macro Media Center added that those that were injured had varying degrees of injuries and El Dorar identified those injured as being fuel tanker drivers.

Syrian Civil Defense also provided details that the shelling occurred in the Hazra area located between the town of Termanin and the city of Dana. Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that the fuel market that was bombed belonged to “Watad petrol company” and Zaman Al Wasl identified the “widows camp” as being Al-Domani camp for the displaced.

One of the White Helmets named Tawfiq described feeling helpless following the bombing and describes a similar incident six years ago when fuel tanks were bombed.

Sources were conflicted as to whether the regime or Russia were responsible for the bombing, with @IdlibPlus attributing the strikes to the regime while the Syrian Civil Defense blamed both Russia and the regime and Al Modon News assigned responsibility to Russia. Euphrates Post identified “Krassenbul laser” missiles as being used in the attack.

Syrian Network for Human Rights reported that the fuel market was under the control of Hay’at Tahrir al Sham and that the fuel was stored in tanks and ground-level warehouses.

The incident occured in the morning.

Airwars assessment

One person was killed, and three people were injured when an alleged Syrian Democratic Force or PKK/PYD artillery shell hit a “family” on the bank of the Euphrates River in the city of Jarablus, in the eastern countryside of Aleppo on April 18th 2022. Despite many sources attributing the belligerent to the SDF, the SDF have disputed this.  In reports about the young man that died, it is contested as to whether he was a non-combatant or a militant.

One local source, @zelal_katee reported that the attack was with rocket-propelled grenades.

One person was initially missing, and their body was found hours later.

This event was followed by a strike which injured three Syrian Civil Defense volunteers who was looking for the missing man, reported in assessment YS130. These two incidents (YS129 and YS130) constitute a ‘double strike’ attack.

Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that the young man who was killed was ‘a member of a faction loyal to Turkey’, but it is unclear whether he was a non-combatant or not which is reflected in the civilian harm range. @Almohrar1 reported that the young man’s name was Shadi Saleh Al-Mohammed, and he was affiliated with the Turkish National Army, including a photo of him in uniform.

The SDF responded to these reports in a press statement which said “sites and pages belonging to the mercenaries of the Turkish occupation published false news about a hypothetical artillery bombardment attributed to our forces that targeted a car and a number of people in the occupied city of Jarabulus, killing and wounding a number of people, including mercenary soldiers, according to those sources.

We confirm that our forces did not carry out any attack during the last period in the mentioned area, and attributing that attack to our forces aims to cover up the real actor behind which the Turkish occupation intelligence hides. Evidence and field investigations, according to the published photos of the place of targeting and the targeted vehicle, confirm that the attack was carried out by a drone that penetrated the Syrian airspace, and is usually repeated by the Turkish occupation’s drones.”

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Airwars assessment

At least one civilian was injured in alleged Israeli strikes on Damascus International Airport on June 10, 2022.

According to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), a Syrian regime-run source, one civilian was injured and material damage occurred from Israeli missile strikes. SANA added that the Syrian army air defenses downed most of the missiles and that the strikes occurred at 4:20am.

An image posted by @damascusv011 shows the fires that broke out from the airstrikes, adding that all flights in the airport had been suspended. The private Sham Wings airlines said it is diverting all its flights from Damascus to the Aleppo International Airport in the country’s north and an airport employee told Times of Israel “we had to postpone all flights for at least 48 hours and some flights have been rerouted through Aleppo airport.”

@mas2oul1specified that the two runways of the airport were destroyed, the first one destroyed during a previous strike and the second as a result of this incident. @obretix identified both runways as being hit in the airstrikes.

According to @IntelliTimes, the attacks occurred at a time “that would not endanger civilian landings”.

Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that the Friday morning Israeli strike hit three arms depots for Iran-backed militiamen inside the airport, adding that the northern runway at the facility was damaged as was the observation tower.

All of the sources attributed the strikes to Israel, with Arabi 21 adding that the missiles came from the occupied Syrian Golan.

The incident occured at 04:20:00 local time.

Airwars assessment

An AFRICOM declared US airstrike in coordination with Somali Army commandos resulted in the death of up to five Al-Shabab fighters near Labi-Kus village on July 17, 2022.

Somali National News Agency (SONNA), a Somali government-run news agency, tweeted that “three #Alshabab terrorists were killed and one was captured after Somali National Army’s commandos (#DANAB) attacked a roadblock which terrorists used to extort money from the local people near Labi-Kus village under #Kismayo town , on Sunday “. Graphic images accompanying the tweet show the bodies of two alleged members of Al-Shabab.

A tweet from Somali National Television (@sntvnews1) reported that two Al-Shabab fighters were killed in action in the vicinity of the Jubba River Valley and no civilians were killed, adding that the operation was carried out by the Somali National Army’s Danab brigade. Shabelle Media Network tweeted that five militants were killed and one was captured alive, and that at least four assault rifles and a PKM machine gun were also seized in the operation. Somaliweyn added that that intelligence that led to the operation was based on the movement of the weapons they seized.

Horseed Media specified that the Somali Forces that were involved was the the 5th Division, 16th Battalion and that a statement issued by the Danab military command said that they killed “least 5 members of Al-Shabaab, including the officer in charge of the area”. According to Kulmiye News Network, one of the militants killed was the “leader of Al-Shabaab in charge of financial affairs in this area, whose name was shortened to Ismail”.

AFRICOM released a statement on July18th stating that “In coordination with the Federal Government of Somalia, U.S. Africa Command conducted an airstrike against al-Shabaab terrorists after they attacked partner forces in a remote location near Libikus, Somalia July 17, 2022…The command’s initial assessment is that two al-Shabaab terrorists were killed in action and that no civilians were injured or killed given the remote nature of where this engagement occurred.” However, none of the reporting prior to the press release mention US involvement, with many sources, including the Somali government-run news agency (SONNA), indicating that Somali forces were responsible.

This was the second incident declared by AFRICOM since US President Joe Biden ordered the redeployment of troops to Somalia in May.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Original strike reports

US Forces

In coordination with the Federal Government of Somalia, U.S. Africa Command conducted an airstrike against al-Shabaab terrorists after they attacked partner forces in a remote location near Libikus, Somalia July 17, 2022.
U.S. forces are authorized to conduct strikes in defense of designated partner forces.
The command’s initial assessment is that two al-Shabaab terrorists were killed in action and that no civilians were injured or killed given the remote nature of where this engagement occurred.
The Federal Government of Somalia and U.S. Africa Command take great measures to prevent civilian casualties. These efforts contrast with the indiscriminate attacks that al-Shabaab regularly conducts against the civilian population.
The Federal Government of Somalia and the U.S. remain committed to fighting al-Shabaab to prevent the deaths of innocent civilians.
Violent extremist organizations like al-Shabaab present long-term threats to Somali, regional and U.S. interests.

Airwars assessment

Between nine to seventeen civilians were killed, including five to six children, and 26 to 42 others were injured, including eleven children, as a result of missile fire which hit a “crowded” marketplace and residential homes and a school in Al Bab city, Aleppo, Syria, on August 19th 2022. The missile fire was an alleged Syrian regime or SDF (PYD/PKK) action.  Local sources were reporting the event as the “Al Bab massacre” due to the high death toll.

One of the missiles hit the four way intersection known as Khamis Local Market in Al-Bab’s Al Sharqi neighbourhood, according to Syrian Network for Human Rights.

MMC reported that the death toll rose to 14 with up to 38 wounded including five civilians who remained unidentified.

One woman who was killed was allegedly displaced from Deir ez-Zor governorate. Another civilian reportedly killed, Tayseer Ramadan, was reportedly displaced from Maarat al-Numan. The Syrian Civil Defense reported that the area, Al Bab, has become “the last refuge for thousands of families that have been displaced by the regime forces and Russia and are living in an acute humanitarian crisis.”

MMC reported that the Director of the Media Center of the Syrian Democratic Forces, Farhad Shami said, “our forces have nothing to do with the bombing of the city of Al-Bab”, denying the responsibility of the PYD/PKK.  Syrian Network for Human Rights reported that six missiles hit the town of Al Bab and they have so far been unable to identify the source of the missiles. They believe that it is a result of either Syrian regime forces or by the Syrian Democratic Forces due to the location of the strike, coming from areas jointly controlled by both actors.

One volunteer from the Syrian Civil Defense reported, “everything is stained with blood, the smell of death is everywhere, the scene is very harsh, people, body parts and children, they are all people descending looking for their livelihood…it is clear that the criminal who bombed the city aimed to kill the largest number of civilians and children, because a missile targeted a school, and thank God, today is a holiday, otherwise the tragedy would have been greater.”

Airwars assessment

Alleged Russian airstrikes in the countryside of Azaz and Afrin, specifically the town of Kafr Jannah and Qatma, resulted in the death and wounding of civilians in addition to the death of up to six militants and the wounding of up to 12 militants.

@shaamnews reported that Russian airstrikes hit the countryside of Azaz and Afrin, killing and wounding Syrian National Army members and civilians. Shaam News was the only source that directly mentioned civilian casualties while others reported that “people” were killed without specifying if they were civilians or militants.

Shaam News also published a statement from the Ministry of Defense in the “Syrian Interim Government” which stated that “The warplanes of the criminal regime this morning, Sunday, October 16, 2022 AD, at eight o’clock, the military and civilian buildings in the regions of Afrin and Azaz, north of Aleppo governorate, with five air strikes that led to the deaths and injuries, most of them civilians. The areas that were targeted this morning include millions of civilians who were displaced due to the crimes of the Assad regime and its allies from the separatist and sectarian terrorist militias.” Shaam put the casualties at two SNA members killed and others wounded.

The Step News Agency correspondent reported that Russian warplanes took off from Hmeimim base in the northern countryside of Latakia and carried out 6 air raids with vacuum missiles against camps of the Turkish-backed opposition factions in the towns of Kafr Jannah and Qatma, resulting in two deaths and more than 7 wounded, with the destruction of a camp and several military vehicles in the vicinity of the building.
