Airwars assessment

AFRICOM reported that the previous day it had “conducted two (2) airstrikes in the vicinity of Debatscile, Somalia targeting al-Shabaab militants on November 19, 2018”. This entry records the first of of these events.

AFRICOM asserted that “We currently assess these airstrikes did not injure or kill any civilians.” It also claimed that “the first airstrike killed twenty-seven (27) militants. This precision strike was a planned and deliberate action.”

A US defense official told CNN that the strikes were carried out by a drone and that the target of this one was an al Shabaab camp. Also, this strike was a “planned and deliberate action” which killed 27 al Shabaab fighters, according to AFRICOM.

Voice of America suggested a near location for both strikes: “Local sources tell VOA’s Somali Service that the attacks took place in the vicinity of Dabad Shil, about 60 kilometers north of Harardhere, a town in the Mudug region. Locals told VOA Somali that the strikes targeted al-Shabab vehicles and militias.”

In a subsequent FOIA response obtained by journalist Joshua Eaton in May 2019, AFRICOM confirmed it had struck what it says were “al Shabaab fighters”, in the vicinity of Quy Cad, Somalia. The second event took place near Debatscile.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

US Forces

Al-Shabaab Degraded by U.S., Federal Government of Somalia

In coordination with the Federal Government of Somalia, U.S. forces conducted two (2) airstrikes in the vicinity of Debatscile, Somalia targeting al-Shabaab militants on November 19, 2018.

We currently assess the first airstrike killed twenty-seven (27) militants. This precision strike was a planned and deliberate action.

We currently assess the second, separate airstrike killed ten (10) militants.

We currently assess these airstrikes did not injure or kill any civilians.

These precision airstrikes were conducted in support of the Federal Government of Somalia as it continues to degrade al-Shabaab. Airstrikes reduce al-Shabaab’s ability to plot future attacks, disrupt its leadership networks, and degrade its freedom of maneuver within the region.

Alongside our Somali and international partners, we are committed to preventing al-Shabaab from taking advantage of safe havens from which they can build capacity and attack the people of Somalia. In particular, the group uses portions of southern and central Somalia to plot and direct terror attacks, steal humanitarian aid, extort the local populace to fund its operations, and shelter radical terrorists.

The desired end state in East Africa is one in which terrorist organizations cannot destabilize Somalia and its neighboring states, nor threaten the interests of the U.S. and its international allies in the region. Accordingly, U.S. Africa Command will continue to work with its partners to transfer the responsibility for long-term security in Somalia from the African Union Mission to Somalia (AMISOM) to the Federal Government of Somalia and its Member States.

Airwars assessment

The Pentagon carried out a February 28th airstrike in Somalia that killed 26 terrorists in the vicinity of Hiran, according to a press release from US Africa Command issued the following day. The attack marked the third US action in four days in the same area.

US Army Brig. Gen. Gregory Hadfield, US Africa Command deputy director of intelligence, asserted in a press release: “At this time, it is assessed this airstrike killed 26 terrorists. Also, at this time, it is assessed no civilians were injured or killed in this airstrike.”

The statement added that “Precision airstrikes such as this one maintain pressure on al-Shabaab and disrupt its planning cycle and degrade its ability to mass forces and coordinate attacks against the Somali people.”

Harun Maruf, a reporter with VOA, tweeted: “Local sources say the strike occurred in an area called Gal-Hamurre.”

According to Associated Press, “When asked why recent strikes have been deadlier, a spokeswoman said Somali and ‘partner forces continue to make incursions into territory formerly controlled by al-Shabab,’ giving them chances to collect more intelligence and develop targets.”

The local time of the incident is unknown.

At least one civilian was killed and and six others, including one to three children and a woman, were injured in alleged Israeli airstrikes on various locations in Latakia in the early morning hours on May 5, 2021.

Images posted by @SAMSyria0 show three different children, a woman, and an elderly man being treated for wounds allegedly sustained during the Israeli strikes. Another tweet reported that according to the General Authority of Masyaf National Hospital, quoting Dr. Maher Younis, 10 injuries were being treated so far, including four serious injuries, from strikes near Deir Shamil in Hama. It is unclear if those injured are civilians or militants.

@SAMSyria0 identified “Lieutenant Sharaf: Hussein Ali Faisal Abeda”, a regime soldier, as being killed in the strikes on Lattakia.

According to Syrian Arab News Agency, “a civilian was martyred in the aggression, and six others, among them a child and his mother were injured, in addition to causing material damages as the Israeli aggression targeted a civilian plastics factory.”

However, Shaam reported that the it was actually a military facility, “activists on social media circulated scenes showing successive fires and explosions emanating from a site that was hit by an air strike in what is believed to be a warehouse of ammunition and weapons belonging to Assad’s forces and the Iranian militias supporting him.”

A tweet from @AsaadHannaa, a journalist for Al Monitor, identified the facility as being “suspected to manufacture drugs of Captagon pills and other drugs in #Latakia; belonging to Badih and Wissam Al-Assad (the family of Bashar Al-Assad)”.

@SAMSyria0 also identified a wood and ceramics warehouse as being struck in the vicinity of al-Raml al-Janoubi neighborhood in the south of Lattakia, in addition to providing the coordinates and referring to the sites struck in Lattakia as being “completely civilian and belonging to civilians”.

Additional details from SANA were that the strikes occurred at about 2:18am and the planes came “from the direction of south west of Lattakia targeting some positions in the coastal region.” @freeehsem added that 35 missiles were used in the bombardment.

Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that the “Israeli airstrikes hit military positions of regime forces and Iranian-backed militias in both countryside of Hama and Latakia in the early hours of Wednesday morning.” In addition, “one civilian was killed and over five others, including a woman and three children, were injured as well as the destruction of a building, but it was not known if it was a warehouse or a workshop, in Ras Shamra and Ras al-Ain in Latakia countryside. However, it is not known if Israeli missiles or shrapnel of the missiles of the regime’s air-defences left these casualties and caused the material damage.”

A post from Nors studies pointed out that “one of the targeted sites is in Ras Shamra, away from the Russian Hmeimim base, where the S-400 systems are located only 20 km away.”

Ynet News reported that according to Syrian television, as a result of the attack, electricity infrastructure in a certain area of the port city of Latakia was damaged, and as a result, the supply of electricity to residents in the area was stopped. Technical teams are working to restore the infrastructure. It was also reported that private homes in the area were also damaged as a result of the attack.

This incident was geolocated by @obretix. The majority of sources attributed the strikes to Israel but the Israeli Defense Forces refused to comment on the strikes.

The incident occured at 02:18:00 local time.

Airwars assessment

Between one and nine civilians were killed and up to 14 were wounded in alleged Russian or regime airstrikes on the village of Ihsem on June 21, 2021. Sources contest whether some of the people identified, specifically the prisoners being held in a prison in Ihsem that was bombed, were belligerents.

The initial number given of casualties from the bombing on Ihsem, according to @jisrtv, was ” 4 dead and 14 wounded”. @HalabTodayTV tweeted that “the number of victims of the regime’s bombing of the town of Ihsem in the southern countryside of Idlib has risen to five” while @Sy24ria identified seven civilians as being killed.

Anadolu Agency reported that 10 civilians were injured in Al Bara and Ihsem but does not distinguish how many were injured in each town.

@EdlibNN reported on the “martyrdom of Ahmed Mustafa Nasouh (Ahmed Al-Satayef), from the town of Al-Bara, as a result of the bombing of the Ahsam police station today”. @Nabel_othman023 added that at the time, he was being detained at the police station.

A tweet from @dbOFRYEU7XqMrTc identified Abu Tahrir Asad as being killed in the strikes on Ihsem and indicated that he was a member of the military. @SyriawatanNews also reported on “the killing of the military commander named “Mohammed Qazi” and a number of terrorists from the so-called “First Infantry Division” affiliated with the “National Liberation Front” terrorists”.

Resala post gives the name of four people killed in Ihsem: Muhammad Abd al-Ilah al-Qadi, from the town of Kafr Sijna  (identified above as a belligerent); Ahmed Mustafa Al-Nasouh from Al-Bara; Walid Al-Asaad from the town of Abdita; Iyad Tahrir Al-Ahmad from the town of Karnaz.

@masri_yaser reported that the bombing struck the “homes of the security force” and identified that it “led to the death of nine people who were inside the house” but does not distinguish if those killed were members of the security force or not. This could indicate that two different locations may have been targeted, as at least four of the civilians killed are identified as being killed in the police station.

Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that “elements of the National Front were there against the background of a dispute” in reference to the police station while Horrya News identified those killed at the police station as “a civilian, a policeman and three prisoners”.

Syrian Network for Human Rights named the policeman killed as Walid Al-Asaad (listed above) and “the deaths of two fighters who were detained in the station”. However, Zaman Al Wasl reported that “the three civilians who died as a result of the bombing were prisoners displaced from different areas in the south and west of Idlib governorate, in addition to the killing of two police station members, and the injury of 5 others, including two prisoners.”

Watan FM News further broke down the numbers to “5 deaths, including two civilians and 3 members of the Syrian National Army.”

Sources were conflicted as to who was responsible for the strikes. A tweet from @syriapostnew1 identified both Russia and the regime as to blame for the bombing while @resalapost attributed the strikes to Russia and Enab Baladi News blamed the regime.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

The victims were named as:

Age unknown from the town of Abdita killed
