In an incident not previously tracked by Airwars, on September 1st 2017 the Coalition said it had concluded an assessment on of civilian harm claims “near Mosul, Iraq” via a media report. According to the Coalition report, “13. June 5, 2017, near Mosul, Iraq, via media report: The report contains insufficient information of the time, location and details to assess its credibility.”

The Coalition shared the location of this assessed strike with Airwars. The location was stated as Mishahda in Mosul.

Airwars assessment

Local sources reported that 18 civilians from four named families – mostly children and women – died under the rubble. An airstrike reportedly hit their homes in the Borsa area in the centre of Mosul. It is presently unclear who was responsible for the airstrikes.

Sawlf Ateka, a local Facebook page, launched an appeal to save the families from under the rubble. It said that those affected were the families of Khalis Ahmad Hamed Abaji and his brother Dr. Banyan Ahmad Hamed Abaji. They used to be the owners of Al Hadba analytical laboratories. The destroyed homes were located near the Bursa area, close to the Central Preparatory School and Fawaz Library. Sawlf Ateka said that as many as twenty civilians were under the rubble.

Other sources also said that the house near Borsa Street, opposite the school, was bombed. Iraqyoon Agency said that 18 members of four families were killed – the families of Dr. Banyan Abaji, the family of his brother (as mentioned above), as well as the families of his sister-in-law and his neighbour. And the local Syndicate of Pharmacists reported the deaths of “Dr. Anfal Karim Ismael Al-Hamdani and her family.” All of the bodies were later recovered.

Airwars assessment

A family of three civilians, including one woman, were killed and several more were injured in artillery fire allegedly carried out by the US-backed, Kurdish-led SDF militia in the Al A’jili neighbourhood of Raqqa, according to local sources. However, only the Coalition was using artillery in the city in this period.

The Revolutionary Forces of Syria Media Office said that it expects the death toll to be higher reporting that “a number of civilians were killed” after “dozens of shells” fell on Al A’jili neighbourhood, Al Mansour Street, the area surrounding the Cultural Centre, the Grand Mosque, the police station and the Pullman garage.

The majority of sources reported that the SDF militia or that the Coalition was responsible.

Additional possible casualties were reported at al Mathaf and al Jazra by Raqqa is Being Slaughtered, though it has not been possible to determine numbers.

June 15th 2017, the French MoD reported "in the past week, France reports his 31 sorties, 28 of which were Armed Reconnaissance or Ground Support (CAS) and 3 were intelligence gathering. Two strikes were conducted by French planes in Iraq and Syria, one in the west of Raqqah city, and the other in the Al Qaim region, both against ISIL fighters. Task Force Wagram carried out 80 artillery strikes in Mosul."

For June 14th-20th, 19 strikes were made by French aircraft in Iraq and Syria. Most of them were carried out during the Battle of Mosul, in support of the Iraqi fighters engaged in the fighting to drive ISIL out of its positions in the North of the Medina. The other strikes were carried out in support of the fighting for the capture of Raqqah, and against flows of arms and fighters in Iraq and Syria.

According to Baladi, “local media sources said three civilians, including two women, were martyred by the bombing of the international coalition airliner on the village of Tabani in the western suburb of Deir Ezzor.”

Al-hokol reported that three non-combatants from the same family died, while according to Syrian Press Center, the Coalition “targeted the homes of civilians” in Al Tabani.

Friday 23 June – Tornados and Typhoons hit three Daesh sniper teams in Mosul, and a truck-bomb and armoured personnel carrier in Raqqa…The next day [June 23rd], a mixed Tornado and Typhoon pair used two Paveway IVs to target successfully a large group of Daesh fighters operating with a truck-bomb and an armoured personnel carrier in Raqqa, while in Mosul a Tornado flight conducted three precision attacks with Brimstone missiles on sniper positions.

‘Monday 26 June – Tornados destroyed a truck-bomb workshop near Al Mayadin in eastern Syria, while Typhoons and Tornados eliminated snipers in Raqqa and Mosul… Two mixed pairs of Tornados and Typhoons, supported by a Voyager air refuelling tanker, meanwhile provided close air support to the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) pushing into Raqqa and to the Iraqi troops clearing remaining Daesh positions in west Mosul. A Brimstone missile accounted for a sniper team in Raqqa'.

19 strikes were made by French aircraft in Iraq and Syria in the last week. Most of them were carried out in the battles of Mosul and Raqqah. These strikes were aimed at groups of Daech fighters. The other strikes were carried out in Syria and targeted regrouping and refueling areas used by jihadi fighters. Task Force Wagram carried out 16 artillery strikes in Mosul.

‘CHAMMAL APPRÉCIATION DE SITUATION En Syrie, les Forces Démocratiques Syriennes (FDS) sont engagées dans des combats féroces pour reprendre progressivement le contrôle du centre-ville de Raqqah. À l’Est, arrivés en bordure de la muraille d’enceinte de la vieille ville, les FDS sont ralentis sur les autres axes par les stratégies de harcèlement et d’imbrication de Daech déjà mises en œuvre à Mossoul. Les combattants du groupe terroriste s’appuient par ailleurs sur les rues étroites de la vieille ville pour freiner la progression des FDS. En Irak, le recul de Daech se poursuit. Au nord-ouest de l’Irak, les Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) et la 15e division irakienne poursuivent leurs actions pour consolider leur emprise sur la province de Ninive. Daech de son côté continue de concentrer ses actions de diversion dans la poche de Hawijah. À Mossoul, les Forces de sécurité irakiennes (FSI) continuent leur progression méthodique. Airwars assessment

One civilian male was reportedly killed and a number of others were injured in airstrikes on Al Toob in Deir Ezzor, however responsibility for the strike was contested.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights claimed that the Coalition was responsible, whereas Baladi News alleged that Syrian government planes were to blame. The remaining six sources who reported the incident did not apportion blame to any party.

The strikes are said to have struck near the high school and the Abo Dello petrol station.
