Airwars assessment

Fifteen civilians were reported killed and 8 wounded in an alleged Coalition raid, according to local sources.

Yaqein said that 15 civilians, including women and children, were killed in a Coalition strike that hit homes. Iraqi Spring Media Center also reported that 15 civilians were killed and that 8 were injured. They too blamed the Coalition.

However, in its February 2017 civilian casualty report the Coalition noted: Dec. 1, 2016, near Al Qa’im, Iraq, via social media report: After a review of available information it was assessed that no Coalition strikes were conducted in this geographic area that corresponds to the report of civilian casualties.

Airwars assessment

At least nine civilians, including women and children, were reported killed and several others wounded due to an alleged Coalition strikes, according to several local sources.

Yaqein reported that the Coalition killed 21 civilians, mostly women and children and wounded ten others included 7 children. A source told Yaqein that “the bombing focused on the areas of Saada and al-Obeidi,” and destroyed four houses along with seven cars belonging to civilians.

Muntathar al Zaidi Al Harari put the number of injured at 13. News of Iraq put the death toll at 9 (all from one family), while Al Gharbia reported that 12 civilians had died and one child was identified by name.

In an emailed response to a report submitted by Airwars on this and other incidents in December 2016, Coalition officials said the event was presently assessed as ‘Not credible.

Airwars assessment

In an incident previously unknown to Airwars, the Coalition later confirmed the death of one civilian near Mosul.

Their February 2017 civilian casualty report noted “During a strike on ISIL fighters firing a mortar on partnered forces it is assessed that one civilian was unintentionally killed.”

The incident appears to refer to an event at al Noor neighbourhood, which was captured by Iraqi security forces shortly afterwards. According to a local eyewitness who spoke with Airwars, Coalition strikes damaged nine civilian houses during the attack near the Aesha Mosque. One man who was killed had been identified by name.

In July 2019, the Coalition provided Airwars with coordinates for the event, accurate to within a 100 metre box.

Meanwhile, two flights of Tornados prosecuted Daesh targets in Syria: one pair joined other coalition aircraft in an attack on a large weapons factory which intelligence had established was being operated by Daesh some 15 miles west of Raqqah. The Tornados dropped three Enhanced Paveway II bombs which scored direct hits on their targets. In eastern Syria, the second Tornado flight used a pair of Paveway IV bombs to destroy a terrorist headquarters, plus an associated vehicle, located some 25 miles north-east of At Tibni.’

A reported Coalition airstrike on the local water company killed at least five workers, according to sources.

Raqqa is Being Slaughtered reported that “three people working at the water company in al Jarnia – one of them the water manager – were killed in international coalition raids targeting the company today.” Baladi News placed the death toll at seven, while Syria Post reported ten deaths. Pro-regime website JP News reported that “Coalition warplanes killed the workers in the water company thought those workers are not ISIS member, and they had been working there even before ISIS was found 3 years ago.”

Syria News Desk cited local activist Mohamed Osman, quoting civilian sources from the village: “The wounded were taken by villagers to the National Hospital in Raqqa, after raids resulted in the destruction of a large civic building institution, in addition to the destruction of an apartment building nearby and other property.”

Two civilians were killed in an alleged Coalition strikes in Mosul, according to local sources.

Nineveh MC reported that one civilian – a father of four – was killed in his home by a Coalition raid: Coalition aircraft targeted a house controlled by ISIL in the Aldoassh neighbourhood during the preparation of their criminal operations. But citizen Ahmed Sufian Thabit in the house next to the targeted house died, a father of four children.

Additionally, in a separate, Muhaned al-Badi reported by name that a man was killed by a Coalition bombing in Mosul.
