Airwars assessment
Two young men, among which a journalist, were killed after alleged Russian airstrikes on the city of Ariha, Idlib governorate, on February 3rd, 2020, according to local sources.
@ShahbaPress tweeted that “media activist Amjad Aktatali was killed by a Russian airstrike on the city of Ariha this morning while covering the aerial bombardment of the city”. Shaam News Network reported that Aktalali was also known as Amjad Abu Al Joud. According to SMART News, Aktali worked for the organisation “Guards” and previously volunteered as a journalist for the Syrian Civil Defence. Ariha Today identified the other victim as Fadi Rahhal.
The Syrian Network for Human Rights wrote that it took over 24 hours before Syrian Civil Defence volunteers managed to find their bodies underneath the rubble. According to SN4HR, the Dawwar Al Dalleh area was hit in the airstrikes.
The Syrian Civil Defence reported on February 5th that “after 24 hours of continuous work, civil defence teams were able to retrieve the bodies of two young men from the rubble in the city of Ariha, south of Idlib, after a Russian airstrike on residential neighbourhoods in the city on Tuesday, which led to the complete destruction of several residential buildings”. According to SMART News, a four-store building was destroyed. Ariha mentioned the use of vacuum missiles.
The incident occured around dawn.
