Airwars assessment
During the afternoon of Saturday, 7th September 2024, a man was severely wounded – and later died of his injuries – by an artillery shelling allegedly perpetrated by the Turkish army on the village of Shirawa in Afrin and Shahba cantons, Aleppo, Syria.
Khaled Mohammed Mohammed was killed as a result of the shelling. ANF news reported that “Khaled Mohammed was living in Shahba after being displaced by the Turkish [military] from the town of Bulbul in … Afrin.”
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights clarified that Khaled, originally from “the village of Bilal” had been critically wounded during the strike, and died the following day of the wounds he sustained. Both Roj News and Hawar News posted photographs of the injuries sustained by Khaled. The photos showed a pair of legs; one is blurred because of the severity of the wounds. A second photo, also blurred, showed a different body part; despite the blur, blood is visible.
Afrin Human Rights posted a photo of Khaled, a young man, on Facebook. A second photograph shared shows the aftermath of the strike, and plumes of smoke can be seen rising above houses.
Where sources attributed the strike to a belligerent, all sources blamed the Turkish military.
The incident occured in the afternoon.
