Airwars Assessment
Shortly before 16:00 on Friday, 1st December 2023, a number of civilians were reportedly killed and several civilians, including a male child, were injured in an artillery bombardment allegedly perpetrated by the Syrian Democratic Forces and/or PKK/PYD militia on the village of Abdo Koy located in the Tal Abyad countryside, north of Raqqa, Syria. Some of the reports alleged that the target of the strike was Turkish military forces stationed in the village.
The majority of reports accounted for civilian casualties of both injuries and deaths but did not include any figures for the reported casualties. Twitter/X user @alkhabour21 shared a picture of an injured male child with his body blurred, but traces of blood and scars are seen on his face.
A majority of reports, including the Syrian Observatory on Human Rights, posted on X/Twitter and Facebook reporting that the strike was carried out by the SDF on targets of military significance to Turkey and pro-Turkish factions. The responsibility of the SDF was supported by tweets from AlForat_Witbness, EuphratesPost, NaherMedia, and Twitter/X users. such as @AbomosaabSharke.
A tweet and a Facebook post by the organisation Al-Khabour identified the perpetrators not as the SDF but instead as the PYD/PKK militia. However, as both the SDF and PYD/PKK are Kurdish militias, Airwars has graded strike status as likely.
