Airwars assessment
On Saturday, May 4, 2024, a man named Nawaf Haj Hussein Al-Junaid Al Abrizi was killed and a child was seriously injured as a result of an artillery shelling allegedly by the Kurdish-affiliated militia Syrian Democratic Forces and/or PKK in Al Ghouz and Al-Al-Kafir, villages west of the city of Al Bab, in the eastern countryside of Aleppo, Syria. Shaam News reported that “several civilians were killed and injured” as a result of artillery shelling coming from areas shared by Syrian regime forces and SDF militias.
There were no further details regarding the injuries of the child available, but according to several sources, including a Zaman al-Wsl news article written based on the Syrian Civil Defence’s report, the injuries were “serious.” Other sources, including a Facebook post by user @horryapress, claimed the child was “seriously injured.”
Facebook account “Deaths in Al-Bab City” reported the incident and wrote that Nawaf Haj Hussein Al Abrizi was buried the same day in Al-Ghouz. The same source also shared a picture of Nawaf Haj Hussein Al Abrizi wearing a red chequered shirt. The age of the civilian who was killed in the incident was not reported, but the picture suggests he was a young man.
Al Sharq News—Syria shared a photo showing a thick cloud of smoke rising over a building.
Where sources identified the belligerent, the source Abo al Haras directly attributed the strike to the Syrian Democratic Forces while Idrak Media Agency named the PKK responsible, and the Facebook account “Deaths in Al-Bab City” mentioned “separatist parties.” As the named entities are Kurdish-affiliated militias, Airwars has graded the strike status as “likely strike.” Other sources mentioned that the strike was carried out from the areas under the joint control of Syrian regime forces and SDF militias, but none of the sources held the Syrian regime forces directly responsible for the incident.
The local time of the incident is unknown.
