Airwars assessment

Rockets fired by Palestinian militants into the Israeli city of Ashkelon caused damage to a number of buildings and cars, physically injuring three civilians including an eight month old child.

Multiple reports state that all those physically injured sustained their injuries whilst seeking shelter from the rockets. This included an eight month old child who sustained minor injuries when their mother fell whilst rushing to a bomb shelter, a 75 year old male who sustained a fracture to his hand and a 71 year old victim. All three were treated at Barzilai Hospital, where several reports state that two civilians aged 19 and 26 were also treated for anxiety in relation to the rocket attack.

Al Qassam claimed responsibility for the attack, publishing in their Telegram channel that “a number of buildings were damaged and a vehicle caught fire after the recent Qassam bombing of Ashkelon, Ashdod and Beersheba”.

One source claims that a rocket directly penetrated a Synagogue and went through to the Rabbi’s apartment next door. Another source claimed that a rocket hit the roof of a house whilst the occupants, two children and their father, were inside but in their safe room and unharmed.

Two sources report that the incident occurred around midday.

One civilian died whilst taking shelter during a rocket attack allegedly fired by Hamas militants in the village of Neta’im, south of Tel Aviv on May 11th, 2021, according to local reports.

According to Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Orly Liron, 52, fell and was subsequently taken to hospital where she died two days later from an aneurysm.

Tal, Orly’s partner, told Ynet: “She was upstairs and I was in the living room. It was announced on TV that an attack on Tel Aviv was beginning. A minute after the alarm went off, I started hearing Barry (the couple’s son) yell at me ‘Daddy, Daddy, I thought it was because he was scared so I went down to them. I opened the door of the emergency room and saw her with a bleeding wound on her forehead.”

Tal added: “She was so looking forward to the coming years, to fill the child’s soul with kindness, love and giving to others. Barry’s role model was taken. A child needs a mother before he needs a father.”

Multiple sources also reported that Orly was a teacher of biology and science at H. Urban School in Tel Aviv for 29 years. Following her death, the high school she worked at released a statement: “We, the Urban God family, hereby announce the passing of Orly Liron, a teacher, educator, wonderful woman, mother of Bari, daughter of Shoshana, sister of Zvika and Nir’s spouse. Orly will forever remain in our hearts.” Her students wrote, “Orly, who taught us, who educated us, who guided us in ceremonies and the rest of her work at school, entered the heart of each and every one of us and will always remain an integral part of the school and the urban community. Airwars assessment

Between 15:30 and 17:20 on Friday October 13th 2023, at least 12 civilians, including three women and three children, were killed in alleged Israeli airstrikes and/or artillery strikes. The strikes hit a convoy of citizens fleeing northern Gaza after instructions from the Israeli military to evacuate. Some reports said the number of civilians killed might be more than 70, with at least 150 and up to more than 200 civilians reported injured, including many displaced women, children and elderly people. Airwars was able to identify at least 12 victims killed by name.

According to an investigation carried out by the Financial Times and Airwars, the deadly explosions took place between the State Roundabout and the Kuwait Roundabout near the Bassem Aliwa Steel Company building. The incident occurred the day after Israel told more than one million civilians living in northern Gaza to flee south for their own safety.

A forensic review of the visual material by the FT/Airwars found that the explosions did not hit the truck carrying a large group of Palestinian civilians directly but a group of cars nearby, with the shrapnel likely responsible for the deaths of the majority of the fleeing civilians – who were seated on an uncovered truck.

Israel denied striking the street and suggested Hamas may have planted explosive devices along the evacuation route. Military analysts consulted by the Financial Times and Airwars said the shrapnel appeared consistent with an Israeli strike.

Palestine Alarabiya and Saddam Souad shared gruesome videos on Facebook showing the direct aftermath of the attack – burned cars and dead bodies lying on the ground amidst blood. Financial Times and Airwars Investigations wrote that videos of the aftermath verified by the media showed 12 bodies of men, women and children in Salah-ad-Din street, which Israel later designated a “safe route”. The media outlet also wrote that there were probably two explosions, one of which damaged an ambulance as it attempted to leave the scene with some of the injured.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza confirmed that “large numbers” of dead and wounded, including women and children, had arrived at Al-Shifa Hospital.

Initially Almamlakah TV reported about 40 civilians killed and more than 150 civilians injured, but later the government media office spoke about a higher death toll of 70 victims killed and more than 200 injured in its press statement. Shehab Agency reported about the “death of more than 70 Palestinians and the injury of hundreds.”

Many victims of this attack remained unidentified. Palestinian Media Center shared the images of its crews performing funeral prayers for the unidentified deceased Palestinian civilians over the bodies wrapped in white cloth stained with blood.

Based on Facebook testimonies by family members, Airwars has identified 12 victims killed in the strike.

The deadly attack took the life of the wife of journalist Sameh Murad and injured a number of his family members. The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate extended its condolences to the colleague, who worked with Al Arabiya channel and remained at work to cover the events of the subsequent Israeli invasion of Al-Shifa Hospital.

The Amara family lost six family members, according to a Facebook post by Mahmoud Amara. A family relative Ahmad Amara shared that he lost his sisters, 24-year old Hanan Ayman Abdel Karim ‘Amara and 25-year old Safaa Hasan Muhammad ‘Amara, Hanan’s children and her fiance, and her fiance’s brother – 26-year old Adham Ayman Muhammad ‘Amara. Abu Mohammed Alfaran mourned the death of his cousins, Adham Amara and a 25-year old Muhammad Ayman Muhammad ‘Amara. Two young men were featured in the pictures attached to his Facebook post.

Youssef Atef Dabbour Asad mourned the death of his father, his brother Mohammad Dabbour Asad and his nephew Atef Dabbour Asad.

Among the victims of the attack was also “the polite young man”, Ismail Muhammad Al-Taweel, remembered in a tribute by Taweel and Shaar Ffamily on Facebook.

There were also victims killed from the Lanoush family. A heartfelt Facebook testimony by Lanoush Lanoush said”: “My uncle, my cousin, his wife, and my cousin were martyred, and their two sons were seriously injured, and they are in intensive care on their way to Salah al-Din.” However, Airwars did not find names and additional information about these victims.

Where possible, names of the victims have been matched with the Palestinian Ministry of Health list of fatalities in Gaza released on October 26th, 2023.

Where sources identified the belligerent, most sources attributed the strikes to Israeli forces. In particular, BBC news and the Financial Times reported that based on video footage, the explosions were most likely caused by strikes launched by the Israeli military.

Financial Times carried out its own investigation in conjunction with Airwars, quoting a munition expert Desmond Travers who had investigated attacks across the globe including in Gaza. According to him, the attack was most probably carried out with a “precision-guided shrapnel-delivered missile”. He added: “There could have been several of them to create the effect I am seeing on the videos. If that is the case, then the attack would have been carried out by the Israelis.” However, Travers did not exclude the possibility of an improvised explosive device (IED) on the site being used. A spokesperson for the Israeli military, Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Conricus, however, denied the allegations and stated that “Hamas is behind this, is using the death of Palestinian civilians for its vile political purposes”.

According to the investigation carried out by Al-Arabi Open Source Investigations Unit, the attack happened around three o’clock in the afternoon. The BBC investigation ascertained that the incident happened between 15:30 and 17:20 local time.

Due to the scale and urgency of Airwars’ assessment process, all images have been automatically uploaded to each assessment with the graphic filter applied to protect users. We have also included all images identified from the sources, which may also include any imagery of combatants.

Airwars assessment

As many as eight people were injured when a rocket allegedly fired by Hamas from Gaza struck a residential street in the city of Petah Tikva, central Israel early on May 12th, 2021, according to local reports. @PalinfoAr also tweeted that there had been a “death.”

The rocket hit an apartment building at approximately 02:00 causing a large fire which spread to surrounding buildings and vehicles, reported the Israeli news outlet Melabes.

Hadas, a tenant in one of the affected buildings, told Ynet: “We went down to the shelter, we heard an alarm and suddenly there was a boom. Smoke entered the shelter, and the neighbor next to me who was sitting on a chair flew backwards. One of the neighbors did not get into the shelter and was injured in the head”. “Our houses, everything is destroyed,” she added.

I24 News, Israel National News and Sama News attributed the incident to “targeting by Qassam rockets” or “Hamas terrorists” and Arab48 News said that the house “was directly hit by a rocket-propelled grenade.”

The Magen David Adom (MDA) medical service said its staff treated five people at the scene. The Beilinson Hospital announced that eight people had arrived at its emergency room following the incident: two suffering from smoke inhalation and wounds from shrapnel and six in mild condition, according to Melabes. However, according to Sama News, Al Araby, Orient, and Al Jazeera Palestine and Arab48 News, five Israelis were wounded.

Amongst the injured were a 40-year-old man injured by shrapnel and a pregnant woman suffering from smoke inhalation, reported Israeli outlet Petach Tikve.

The incident occured at approximately 2:00 am local time.

Airwars assessment

A heavy barrage of rockets launched by Al Qassam towards the city of Ashdod injured at least three civilians, directly hitting and significantly damaging a four story residential building, according to several sources. Al Qassam claimed responsibility for the attack.

Whilst most residents of the building were located in the protected stairwell and were therefore unharmed, according to multiple reports three civilians sustained minor injuries from shattered glass and five civilians were treated for symptoms of stress relating to the attack. One source claimed that two of those treated were children however it was unclear from this report whether they were physically injured. No other sources reported that children were physically injured.

A tweet from @Arabi21News put the number of injuries in Ashdod at 12 while @skynewsarabia reported that eight people were injured. However, it is unclear if the five “stress symptoms” were included in these numbers or if these were physically injuries.

Whilst one source claimed there were suspicions of a civilian trapped under rubble, another source stated that this suspicion was later disproved.

Whilst one source put the time of incident at 1.43pm, another source reported the time of the incident to be 1.31pm which was later confirmed by an Al-Qassam Brigades statement claiming responsibility for the attack.

The incident occured at 13:31:00 local time.

Airwars assessment

One civilian died of a heart attack during a rocket barrage by alleged Hamas militants in Giv’at Shmuel, west of Tel Aviv on May 11th, 2021, according to local reports.

Ron Vered was going for a jog with friends when an air raid alarm sounded shortly after 20:30, reported Ono News. According to the source Mr Vered sought shelter close to a wall where soon after he collapsed.

Staff from the Magen David Adom medical service performed CPR on Mr Vered both at the scene and on the way to the hospital where it was later announced that he had died, according to Ono News.

MDA paramedic Elazar Rubinstein told Ono News that “For about 40 minutes we performed CPR on him and it felt like two or three hours… I felt I was endangering myself, but I felt a mission to save his life. We actually fought him. He was young and we thought there was a good chance he was saved. At one point we decided to be evacuated to the hospital and also on the way there they performed CPR on him non-stop in an intensive care unit. Unfortunately, I was later informed that he had passed away.”

Ono News also added that “at that time, Vered’s wife, Danit, was in a carriage with her daughter near their house and when the first alarm sounded they sought shelter and entered the lobby of the building where they live: “I picked up my daughter from the bus stop and when we were near the house we heard the alarm. We quickly entered the building lobby and waited for relaxation,” says his wife Danish. “We tried several times to call Ron, but he did not answer the phone. After a few attempts, a nurse from Beilinson Hospital answered me and told me to get there. I called my brother and we drove to the hospital.””

Once she learned at the hospital that her husband had died, Danit allowed the nurses to donate his corneas. She told Channel 7 that “He was a pure and clean man, a good soul. He would give everything for others and that is the little thing where we could commemorate him.”

“Vered, a resident of Givat Shmuel for 14 years, has been a member of the Maccabi Ramat Gan Kochav soccer team since the age of 9. For the past two years, he has been involved in the “Hako Gali Gil Ramat Gan” fan group, which was one of its founders. He left behind a wife and two daughters.”

Hakoach Będzin, a Jewish soccer club in Poland, posted a tribute to him: “Today sad news has reached us from Israel. Ron Vered our good friend, football enthusiast, great friend to Hakoach Będzin suffered a heart attack during a missile attack on Israeli territory by Hamas forces supported by Palestinian leaders”.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Airwars assessment

On October 13th 2023, a young male civilian was killed in a bombing of the Al-Barawi family home located in Beit Lahia, Gaza Strip.

A post on social media from a relative, Wisam Al-Barawi, identified Mohammed Basem Al-Barawi as the civilian killed in the strike on Beit Lahia.

An image of the damaged house showing the collapse of the building was distributed on Facebook. It was also reported by local sources that no warning was provided before the strike.

None of the sources attributed the strike to a belligerent, therefore the strike status and civilian harm grading have been evaluated as contested.

Airwars was not able to match the named victim with the Palestinian Ministry of Health list of nearly 7000 victims’ names and ID numbers released on October 26th.

Due to the scale and urgency of Airwars’ assessment process, all images have been automatically uploaded to each assessment with the graphic filter applied to protect users. We have also included all images identified from the sources, which may also include any imagery of combatants.
