Airwars assessment

Between two and six civilians were killed and up to seven others were injured in alleged Yemeni or US airstrikes on Ja’ar on July 5, 2011. Four militants were also reportedly killed.

The numbers of dead and wounded varied, as @NoonArabia tweeted that three civilians were killed and seven people were wounded. According to @AdenLang, the death toll in the bombing rose to six after the death of three of the civilians that were wounded.

An air strike hit the house of Deputy Chairman of Parliament, Ali Al-Shaddadi, in Ja’ar on July 5, 2011 and according to Abdullah Al-Maiseri, two civilians were killed. Abdulkader Al-Guneid (@alguneid) tweeted that two Shaddadi brothers were killed in the strike, while Yusra A @YusraAIA tweeted that Al-Shaddadi’s brother-in-law was killed.

Sahafanet reported that according to the Al-Arabiya correspondent, deputy speaker of the Yemeni parliament Muhammad al-Shaddadi’s home was hit with airstrikes, killing three of his relatives and wounding seven others.

Al-Guneid also stated that the Health Institute building was hit with four people wounded, while Sahafanet stated that the health institute located next to Al-Razi Hospital was struck and led to the killing of four militants affiliated with jihadist Sami Dayan.

Multiple tweets from local sources, including @YusraAlA and @NoonArabia, directly alleged that the US carried out drone strike in Jaar on the same date.

On July 5th, 2011, at least 11 were killed and 57 were wounded in bombings on Misurata by Gaddafi forces. It was unclear how many were Libyan rebel forces and how many were civilians, and no detailed information were provided on the casualties.

BBC wrote that “Libyan opposition sources said that at least 11 people were killed and 57 wounded Tuesday in the bombing of the Gaddafi Brigades on the city of Misrata in western Libya.”

Multiple sources reported the bombings, while @AJABreaking reported “at least 5 rebels were killed in the Qadhafi Brigades’ bombings.”

Up to four civilians were reported killed by Gaddafi regime forces artillery shelling on Misurata.

Al Jazeera reported: “On the Misurata front, Reuters reported that three people were killed and 12 wounded in an artillery bombardment by Gaddafi forces on the Dafiniyah area.

More rockets fell on Wednesday in a suburb close to the port, and residents said no one was hurt, while a Reuters reporter said many dead sheep were lying in a field after the attack.”

February 17 Revolution of the Liberals of Libya said: “One of the city’s northeastern neighborhoods was shelled by long-range missiles by Gaddafi’s criminal battalions. About three rockets landed in one of the neighborhoods, causing material damage and wounding four civilians. The shelling killed about 35 sheep.”

Aisha Mansurey and Libya Alahrar TV said no human casualties occurred but the latter tweeted that six sheep were killed.

One child was possibly injured in a NATO airstrike on Tripoli.

A video report uploaded by Adam Nafusa says that the government had claimed the child was injured by an airstrike, while a hospital worker insisted they had been injured in a car accident.

Reuters also said it had learned from a hospital staff member that the child was injured in an accident.

NATO itself and other sources only reported airstrikes on Tripoli but no civilian harm.

Throughout the whole 2011 NATO intervention some independent monitors assessed that the Gaddafi regime had routinely fabricated civilian harm allegations.

On May 30th, 2011, multiple sources reported NATO airstrikes on Zliten, which were said to have killed 11 people – although their status was unclear.

RT said: “Libyan television announced on Monday, May 30th, that NATO launched air strikes on the town of Zliten on the coastal road linking Tripoli and Misrata, killing 11 people.”

The state-run Libyan News Agency reported “many injured”, but no number was provided and this was not confirmed by any other source.

The airstrikes were reported by France 24 to have been on the Wadi Kaam region of Zliten. It noterd that “The official Libyan News Agency reported that ‘civilian and military sites’ in the Wadi Kaam area in Zliten were subjected to raids on Monday by ‘the colonial Crusader aggression,’ pointing to ‘the fall of 11 martyrs’ and wounding many others.”

NATO itself did not report strikes near Zliten on that day, and some independent monitors after the war said that some claims by Gaddafi regime-affiliated media had been found to be exaggerated or fabricated

Six possible civilian fatalities were reported in a NATO airstrike on Tripoli at or near one of Gaddafi’s compounds.

Al Jazeera reported that “A series of explosions rocked early at dawn today in the center of the Libyan capital, Tripoli, in the vicinity of Bab al-Aziziyah, the headquarters of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, after a raid by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).”

Matelo0ove said: “Six people killed and 10 others wounded in air strikes in Libya: In new Libyan developments, a delegation of members of the National Council is visiting.” Other sources published similar accounts. However almost all media only described ‘people’

NATO itself said it had struck ” 2 Surface-To-Air Missile Launchers, 3 Buildings inside a military camp” on that day without admitting to any civilian harm.

On May 3rd, 2011, Gaddafi forces reportedly bombed Misurata after NATO planes had left the area.

Al Jazeera said: “Fighting broke out between the rebels and the Gaddafi Brigades in the southern and eastern suburbs of Misrata, and the rebels said they repelled an attack by tanks belonging to the brigades.

Sources reported that 55 civilians were killed and wounded in battles since last night, and the sporadic shelling of the Ruwaisat area continued, in which warehouses of goods were burned.”

Another local source, Resistance Misurata, suggested that no civilians may in fact have been killed: “Thankfully, no news has been received so far about cases of wounded or martyrs among civilians as a result of the intermittent shelling of the terrorist forces on the city.”
