The Netherlands report that six F-16 fighter planes departed on the morning of Wednesday 3rd January from Air Base Volkel to the Middle East. The Dutch aircraft will take part in the international coalition that fights against terrorist organization ISIS. The F-16s, including two spare aircraft, operate from Jordan. It is the second time that the Netherlands is using fighter aircraft against IS. The last time was from October 2014 to July 2016. Belgium then took over from the Netherlands. Now it is the other way round. At the end of last year, the green light came for the new Dutch participation. Earlier today [January 3rd] and last week, 150 soldiers of the F-16 detachment left from Eindhoven Air Base. The Royal Netherlands Air Force also deployed a force protection detachment. This protected the Belgian F-16 unit. The Air Force also supplied a KDC-10 tanker plane and C-130 Hercules transport plane. The press release adds: “Despite the fact that the Islamic terror organization has almost been defeated, the battle has not yet fully been fought. The threat remains. There is still a need for the fighter planes of the coalition.”

6 F-16-gevechtsvliegtuigen zijn woensdagochtend vertrokken vanaf Vliegbasis Volkel naar het Midden-Oosten. De Nederlandse toestellen nemen daar deel aan de internationale coalitie die strijdt tegen terreurorganisatie ISIS.

De F-16’s, waaronder 2 reservetoestellen, opereren vanuit Jordanië. Het is de 2e keer dat Nederland jachtvliegtuigen inzet tegen IS. De vorige keer was van oktober 2014 tot juli 2016. Toen loste België Nederland af. Nu is het andersom. Eind vorig jaar kwam er groen licht voor de nieuwe Nederlandse deelname. Eerder vandaag en vorige week vertrokken al 150 militairen van het F-16 detachement vanaf vliegbasis Eindhoven.

Nog altijd behoefte

Ondanks dat de islamitische terreurorganisatie bijna is verslagen, is de strijd nog niet volledig gestreden. De dreiging blijft. Er is dan ook nog altijd behoefte aan jachtvliegtuigen bij de coalitie.

De Koninklijke Luchtmacht zette daarnaast een force protection detachement in. Deze beschermde de Belgische F-16-eenheid. Ook leverde de luchtmacht een KDC-10-tankervliegtuig en C-130 Hercules-transportvliegtuig.
