Saturday 27 January – Typhoons bombed two Daesh positions… Typhoons provided support to the Syrian Democratic Forces on 27 January, delivering destroying a two Daesh positions.

Friday 26 January – Tornados struck a Daesh-held building and a Reaper hit a group of terrorists…On 26 January, a Reaper worked alongside two Tornados over the area [Euphrates area]; the Reaper identified one building occupied by extremists, which allowed the Tornados to strike, then it hit a further group with a Hellfire.

CHAMMAL

SITUATION MILITAIRE DU THEATRE

Sur le théâtre irako-syrien, les opérations se poursuivent avec pour objectif :

– de défaire les dernières poches terroristes résiduelles en Syrie ;

– de sécuriser les territoires récemment libérés en Irak pour y empêcher toute résurgence de Daech.

Poursuite des combats en Syrie

Les opérations n’ont pas connu d’évolution significative cette semaine. La dynamique récente des forces démocratiques syriennes (FDS) a été freinée par les mauvaises conditions météorologiques qui limitent les possibilités d’appui aérien de la coalition.

Les FDS ont profité de cette pause pour renforcer leur manœuvre d’encerclement autour de la ville d’Hajin, permettant d’isoler davantage ce point d’appui de Daech sur l’Euphrate.

Poursuite des actions de sécurisation

En Irak, les opérations de sécurisation se poursuivent. Les forces de sécurité irakiennes (FSI) n’y rencontrent qu’une faible résistance de Daech mais continuent toujours de découvrir de nombreuses caches d’armes.

Retour des déplacés

En Irak, les autorités irakiennes ont annoncé le retour en un mois d’environ 460 000 déplacés dans leur ancien lieu d’habitation, plus haut chiffre depuis le déclenchement du conflit en 2014.

Le principal obstacle à ces retours demeure le nettoyage des engins explosifs improvisés et autres pièges qu’a laissé Daech dans ces zones.

Le général Parisot, Senior National Representative français au sein de l’opération Inherent Resolve et chef de la cellule en charge des opérations civilo-militaire de la Coalition, suit avec attention ces flux de déplacés et l’évolution de la situation humanitaire dans la zone d’opération de la Coalition.

Formation des forces de sécurité irakiennes

Le 21 janvier, la Task Force Narvik a débuté un nouveau stage de formation d’un mois au profit d’une centaine de futures recrues de l’Iraki Counter Terrorism Service (ICTS).

Un stage intitulé Deep Recon débutera également le 3 février au profit d’une vingtaine de stagiaires appartenant à l’ICTS qui vont être spécialisés dans les techniques de recueil de renseignement tactique.

La Task Force Wagram en appui des opérations de sécurisation

La Task Force Wagram poursuit son appui aux opérations de sécurisation menées dans la vallée de l’Euphrate. Cette semaine, quatre missions de tirs ont été réalisées au profit des forces de sécurité irakiennes (3 missions d’éclairement et 1 mission d’interdiction – bilan du 17 au 23 janvier).

Depuis le début de sa mission, la TF Wagram, a réalisé 1610 missions de tirs.

Les bases aériennes en Jordanie et aux EAU en appui des opérations

Cette semaine, l’activité aérienne a permis d’assurer des missions de renseignement et d’appui au profit des forces de sécurité irakiennes et des forces démocratiques syriennes.’

Elle a donné lieu à 12 sorties aériennes (bilan du 17 au 23 janvier) au cours desquelles deux frappes ont été réalisées, toutes deux en Syrie dans le secteur d

Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve and its partners continue to strike ISIS targets in designated parts of Syria and Iraq.

Ongoing operations by Iraqi Security Forces and Syrian Democratic Forces demonstrate that much work remains to defeat ISIS here.

Between Jan. 19 and Jan. 25, Coalition military forces conducted 60 strikes consisting of 93 engagements against ISIS terrorists in Syria and Iraq.
On Jan. 25 in Syria, Coalition military forces conducted six strikes consisting of 12 engagements against ISIS targets.

On Jan. 23 in Syria, Coalition military forces conducted six strikes consisting of 10 engagements against ISIS targets.
Near Abu Kamal, six strikes engaged an ISIS tactical unit and destroyed three pieces of ISIS construction equipment, three fighting positions and two ISIS supply routes.

On Jan. 19 in Syria, Coalition military forces conducted seven strikes consisting of 13 engagements against ISIS targets.
Near Abu Kamal, seven strikes destroyed two ISIS supply routes, three ISIS equipment vehicles, six fighting positions, two ISIS vehicles and a command and control center.

There were no reported strikes conducted in Iraq on Jan. 19, 2018.

Additionally, we received late reporting of four strikes consisting of 13 engagements conducted in Syria against ISIS targets on Jan. 18 near Abu Kamal, engaging four ISIS tactical units and destroyed an ISIS vehicle.

Wednesday 24 January – Typhoons destroyed two buildings held by Daesh in eastern Syria, whilst a Reaper attacked two groups of terrorists…On 24 January, Typhoons patrolled over the Euphrates area, destroying two Daesh buildings from which terrorists were engaged in combat with the SDF. A Reaper also carried out strikes, hitting groups of terrorists armed with rocket-propelled grenades.

Monday 22 January – a Reaper conducted three attacks on terrorists…

The fight to defeat Daesh is far from over, the Defence Secretary warned today in Rome as he met with counterparts at the Counter Deash Ministerial to review the success of the campaign, reaffirm the UK’s commitment to defeat Daesh, and discuss the future role of the Global Coalition.

Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson said:

“The UK will not be complacent when it comes to terrorism – a point I reaffirmed with my Global Coalition counterparts today. We pledged to continue to fight terrorists until their poisonous global network is totally destroyed. Despite Daesh’s diminishing territory, it is hell-bent on directing and inspiring terrorist attacks worldwide – threatening our security at home and abroad. The threat they pose is evolving and intensifying but our resolve to defeat them will not fade.”

As demonstration of this, the RAF have struck 22 times in the past three weeks, destroying Daesh drone operators, terrorist compounds, observation points, heavy machine-gun teams and pockets of fighters engaged in close quarter, street fighting with Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

As the SDF drive the final pockets of Daesh fighters from Syria, RAF fast jets and remotely piloted Reaper aircraft provided close air support. On 22 January, a Reaper conducted three attacks against Daesh extremists fighting on foot and holding a building north of Abu Kamal.

Sunday 21 January – a Reaper attacked three terrorist targets in eastern Syria, including a group of extremists spotted setting up a potential ambush position…On Sunday 21 January, a Reaper identified a group of extremists setting up a probable ambush position in and around a small building in the Euphrates valley. A Hellfire missile scored a direct hit, killing the terrorists and causing a large secondary explosion, likely from weapons concealed inside the building. The Reaper then conducted a further two Hellfire attacks on terrorist positions, and supported a successful coalition air strike.

Saturday 20 January – a Reaper destroyed a Daesh-held building in eastern Syria, whilst Typhoons demolished a second…The following day [Jan 20th], a Reaper used a GBU-12 guided bomb to demolish a Daesh-held building north-west of Abu Kamal, and provided targeting and surveillance support to four coalition air strikes, including one which destroyed a munitions stockpile detected when the Reaper spotted terrorists delivering weapons to the building. A flight of Typhoons were also active over the area, and they used a Paveway to destroy a further Daesh-held building.

Friday 19 January – Typhoons and Tornados struck six terrorist positions and a truck-bomb in eastern Syria…The Euphrates valley was blanketed by cloud on Friday 19 January, but two RAF flights of Typhoons and Tornados nevertheless continued to provide effective air support to the SDF. Six attacks were delivered with Paveway IVs through the cloud onto terrorist positions with which the SDF were engaged in close combat; all six Daesh positions were reported by the SDF to have been destroyed, along with a truck-bomb.

Between Jan. 12 and Jan. 18, Coalition military forces conducted 63 strikes consisting of 102 engagements against ISIS terrorists in Syria and Iraq.

On Jan. 18 in Syria, Coalition military forces conducted three strikes consisting of seven engagements against ISIS targets.

• Near Abu Kamal, three strikes engaged three ISIS tactical units and destroyed an indirect fire weapon, a fighting position and an ISIS line of communication.

There were no reported strikes conducted in Iraq on Jan. 18, 2018.

On Jan. 17 in Syria, Coalition military forces conducted six strikes consisting of 14 engagements against ISIS targets.

• Near Abu Kamal, six strikes engaged three ISIS tactical units and destroyed two logistics centers, three ISIS lines of communication, a heavy machine gun, three fighting positions, an ISIS-held building, a tunnel, two weapons caches and an ISIS supply route.

On Jan. 16 in Syria, Coalition military forces conducted four strikes consisting of four engagements against ISIS targets.

• Near Abu Kamal, four strikes engaged three ISIS tactical units and destroyed a UAV, an indirect fire position and an ISIS headquarters.

On Jan. 16 in Iraq, Coalition military forces conducted one strike consisting of three engagements against ISIS targets.

On Jan. 13 in Iraq, Coalition military forces conducted one strike consisting of one engagement against ISIS targets.

• Near Mosul, one strike destroyed an ISIS tunnel.

On Jan. 12 in Syria, Coalition military forces conducted 14 strikes consisting of 17 engagements against ISIS targets.

• Near Abu Kamal, 14 strikes engaged 10 ISIS tactical units and destroyed an ISIS supply route, an indirect fire weapon, a fighting position, an ISIS headquarters and a UAV.

On Jan. 12 in Iraq, Coalition military forces conducted one strike consisting of three engagements against ISIS targets.

• Near Tuz, one strike engaged an ISIS tactical unit.

These strikes were conducted as part of Operation Inherent Resolve, the operation to destroy ISIS in Iraq and Syria. The destruction of ISIS targets in Iraq and Syria also further limits the group’s ability to project terror and conduct external operations throughout the region and the rest of the world.

This Coalition strike release contains all strikes conducted by fighter, attack, bomber, rotary-wing, or remotely piloted aircraft, rocket propelled artillery and ground-based tactical artillery.

Thursday 18 January – two Reapers struck six terrorist targets, including two armed trucks, two lorry-bombs, a mortar and a Daesh-held building, in eastern Syria…SDF operations north of Abu Kamal on Thursday 18 January were supported by two RAF Reapers as well as other coalition aircraft. One of our Reapers used a Hellfire to knock out an armed truck that was firing on the SDF, then pursued a second such vehicle as it drove away and destroyed it with another Hellfire. A third Hellfire was used in a successful attack on a Daesh-held building. The second Reaper also conducted three attacks; a Hellfire missile silenced a mortar spotted firing from beneath some trees, and a further missile and a GBU-12 guided bomb took care of two truck-bombs. As well as conducting their own attacks, the Reapers also provided targeting and surveillance support to seven attacks by coalition aircraft, against a range of terrorist positions, including two engineering vehicles being used by Daesh, and a large group of terrorists mounted on motorcycles, whom our aircraft tracked to a compound, where they were successfully targeted by a fast jet.

Poursuite des combats en Syrie

Dans la vallée de l’Euphrate, les forces démocratiques syriennes continuent de progresser malgré une forte résistance d’un ennemi qui continue de s’accrocher au terrain.

Les gains territoriaux sont cependant réguliers et Daech subit de nombreuses pertes.

Attentat à Bagdad

Le 15 janvier à Bagdad, une double attaque suicide a causé la mort de 35 civils et blessé une centaine d’autres. Cet attentat témoigne d’un des nouveaux modes d’action de Daech consistant à utiliser des actions asymétriques.

Poursuite des actions de sécurisation

En Irak, les opérations de sécurisation se poursuivent afin de neutraliser les éléments résiduels de Daech.

Elles portent actuellement leurs efforts sur la province de Ninive et sur les grandes villes de l’Est irakien où les forces de sécurité irakiennes continuent de découvrir et de détruire un nombre significatif de caches, de tunnels et d’engins explosifs, résidus de l’organisation qu’avait mise en place Daech.

Des forces de sécurité irakiennes de plus en plus autonomes

Les forces de sécurité irakiennes mènent ces opérations en grande autonomie en s’appuyant notamment sur leurs propres capacités aériennes.

Dans l’Anbar, où environ 1100 km de routes ont été sécurisés, l’armée de l’Air irakienne a ainsi assuré des missions de renseignement et traité plusieurs objectifs en appui des opérations de sécurisation.

Les efforts de formation de la Coalition portent leurs fruits

Cette autonomie croissante des forces de sécurité irakiennes est un signe de l’efficacité des actions de formation dispensées par la Coalition. Depuis 2014 et le début de l’opération Inherent Resolve, plus de 45 000 soldats irakiens ont été formés par la Coalition internationale.

La contribution française à la formation des forces de sécurité irakiennes

Parmi eux, 7500 ont été formés par les militaires français de l’opération Chammal appartenant aux Task Force Narvik et Monsabert.

Cet effort se poursuit.

Le 15 janvier, la Task Force Narvik, en charge de la formation de l’Iraki Conter Terrorism Service (ICTS), unité d’élite irakienne, vient de terminer un nouveau stage de formation de 100 recrues potentielles de l’ICTS.

Intitulé preparation for selection course, ce stage consiste à aguerrir les potentielles recrues tout en leur inculquant des connaissances en matière de secours au combat, de topographie, d’armement, et de lutte contre les mines.

Un nouveau stage de ce type devrait débuter le 21 janvier prochain. Il accueillera également une centaine de stagiaires.

Cette semaine, l’activité aérienne s’est principalement concentrée sur des missions de renseignement au profit des forces de sécurité irakiennes et des forces démocratiques syriennes.

Elle a donné lieu à 23 sorties aériennes (bilan du 10 au 16 janvier) au cours desquelles trois frappes ont été réalisées :

deux en soutien des forces démocratiques syriennes ;

et une au nord de Tikrit en Irak, en appui des forces de sécurité irakiennes.

Bilan total des opérations aériennes depuis le 19/09/14 :

7676 sorties / 1429 frappes / 2218 objectifs neutralisés.

Wednesday 17 January – a mixed Tornado/Typhoon flight attacked three groups of terrorists in eastern Syria…The Syrian Democratic Forces encountered a Daesh-held building as they cleared a village on the east bank of the Euphrates, north-west of Hajin, on Wednesday 17 January. A mixed pair of a Tornado GR4 and a Typhoon FGR4 came to their assistance and, despite the close proximity of the SDF to the target, successfully demolished the building with a Paveway IV guided bomb. Our aircraft then inflicted further casualties on the terrorists in the area, using Brimstone missiles to strike two groups of extremists manoeuvring on foot.

Monday 15 January – a Reaper destroyed a lorry-bomb and a terrorist truck in eastern Syria…Royal Air Force aircraft have continued to support operations by the Syrian Democratic Forces to liberate the Euphrates valley in eastern Syria from the brutality of Daesh. A Reaper remotely piloted aircraft patrolled north of Abu Kamal on Monday 15 January. An armoured truck had been spotted parked on a main road, ahead of the SDF advance, and was assessed to be a probable lorry-bomb. The Reaper’s crew used a Hellfire missile to attack the vehicle and safely eliminate any threat it might pose; the very large explosion that resulted confirmed that it could indeed have posed a very dangerous risk to the SDF and the local civilian population. Later in the patrol, terrorists were spotted interacting with a truck, well concealed under trees. A second Hellfire missile was fired, and guided with great precision through the treeline to score a direct hit. Multiple secondary explosions followed as the truck’s cargo detonated.

Sunday 14 January – a Reaper eliminated a Daesh drone operator…On Sunday 14 January, a Reaper spotted the third terrorist drone team identified during the week; on this occasion, the extremists attempted to conceal themselves in a building, but could be seen controlling the drone from the top-floor window. A Hellfire was directed accurately through the window.

Friday 12 January – a Reaper struck a Daesh-held building and a terrorist on a motorcycle, both in eastern Syria…Another Reaper continued support to the SDF in this area on Friday 12 January, and its crew conducted attacks with Hellfire missiles on a Daesh-held building and a terrorist moving at speed on a motorcycle.

Saturday 13 January – a Reaper delivered five attacks on terrorist targets in eastern Syria…A Reaper worked very closely with another coalition armed reconnaissance aircraft on Saturday 13 January, again to the north of Abu Kamal. Our aircraft spotted a second terrorist drone team launching a quadcopter from a rooftop, and kept close watch on them whilst the coalition aircraft manoeuvred into a suitable firing position from which it successfully attacked the drone team. The Reaper supported a further two successful attacks by its coalition companion, and also delivered five attacks with four Hellfire missiles and one GBU-12 guided bomb. These weapons struck four buildings and a defensive berm, from which fire had been directed by extremists at the Syrian Democratic Forces.

Between Jan. 5 and Jan. 11, 2018, Coalition military forces conducted 96 strikes consisting of 160 engagements against ISIS terrorists in Syria and Iraq.

On Jan. 11 in Syria, Coalition military forces conducted six strikes consisting of seven engagements against ISIS targets.

• Near Abu Kamal, six strikes [1-2 British] engaged four ISIS tactical units and destroyed an ISIS fighting position.

There were no reported strikes conducted in Iraq on Jan. 11, 2017.

On Jan. 10 in Syria, Coalition military forces conducted 19 strikes consisting of 34 engagements against ISIS targets.

• Near Abu Kamal, 19 strikes engaged 10 ISIS tactical units and destroyed an ISIS supply route, four ISIS vehicles, three control and command centers, a recoilless rifle, two logistics centers, an indirect fire weapon and a VBIED.

There were no reported strikes conducted in Iraq on Jan. 10, 2017.

On Jan. 9 in Syria, Coalition military forces conducted 26 strikes consisting of 39 engagements against ISIS targets.

On Jan. 8 in Syria, Coalition military forces conducted 15 strikes consisting of 26 engagements against ISIS targets.

• Near Abu Kamal, 15 strikes engaged 12 ISIS tactical units and destroyed three ISIS vehicles, an ISIS headquarters, a fighting position, an ISIS line of communication and an indirect fire weapon.

There were no reported strikes conducted in Iraq on Jan. 8, 2017.

On Jan. 7 in Syria, Coalition military forces conducted 17 strikes consisting of 27 engagements against ISIS targets.

• Near Abu Kamal, 17 strikes engaged 13 ISIS tactical units and destroyed two ISIS headquarters, three logistics centers, two ISIS command and control centers, two fighting positions, two VBIED factories and two ISIS vehicles.

On Jan. 7 in Iraq, Coalition military forces conducted two strikes consisting of seven engagement against ISIS targets.

• Near Huwayjah, one strike engaged an ISIS tactical unit and destroyed an ISIS tunnel.

• Near Qayyarah, one strike engaged an ISIS tactical unit.

On Jan. 6 in Syria, Coalition military forces conducted seven strikes consisting of 13 engagements against ISIS targets.

• Near Abu Kamal, seven strikes engaged six ISIS tactical units and destroyed an ISIS supply route, a VBIED, an ISIS observation post, two fighting positions and an ISIS vehicle.

On Jan. 6 in Iraq, Coalition military forces conducted one strike consisting of one engagement against ISIS targets.

• Near Hawijah, one strike destroyed an ISIS bunker and an ISIS tunnel.

On Jan. 5 in Syria, Coalition military forces conducted three strikes consisting of six engagements against ISIS targets.

• Near Abu Kamal, three strikes destroyed three fighting positions and two ISIS supply routes.

There were no reported strikes conducted in Iraq on Jan. 5, 2017.

Additionally, we received late reporting of two strikes conducted in Iraq and Syria against ISIS targets.

• On Jan. 4, 2018 near Abu Kamal, Syria, one strike engaged an ISIS tactical unit.

• On Dec. 4, 2017 near Rutbah, Iraq, one strike destroyed a VBIED and a VBIED factory.

Thursday 11 January – a Reaper attacked four terrorist targets in eastern Syria, including a Daesh drone operator…On Thursday 11 January, a Reaper again patrolled north of Abu Kamal, the crew using the aircraft’s long endurance and sophisticated surveillance sensors to provide overwatch for the SDF on the ground. Three groups of terrorists were successfully attacked with Hellfires, and a fourth missile was employed to kill a Daesh extremist spotted on a rooftop, controlling a small drone of the type used by the terrorists to attempt to spot opponents and conduct harassing attacks with improvised weaponry.

OPÉRATION CHAMMAL

SITUATION MILITAIRE DU THEATRE



Après deux semaines de mauvaises conditions météorologiques qui ont freiné les opérations sur l’ensemble du théâtre, les conditions plus clémentes de cette semaine ont permis aux opérations de bénéficier à nouveau d’un appui aérien.

Ces opérations visent principalement à défaire les poches terroristes résiduelles encore présentes en Syrie et à sécuriser les territoires irakiens récemment libérés.

Poursuite des combats en Syrie



En Syrie, les forces démocratiques syriennes poursuivent leur progression dans la vallée de l’Euphrate.

Concentrée autour de la ville d’Hajin et organisée autour d’un dispositif de défense en profondeur élaboré, Daech oppose une forte résistance.

Les avancées réalisées par les forces démocratiques syriennes ont néanmoins permis d’isoler les terroristes présents, limitant ainsi leurs possibilités d’exfiltration.

Opérations de sécurisation et de contrôle de zone en Irak



En Irak, les opérations de ratissage et de sécurisation se poursuivent avec pour objectif de limiter les possibilités de réorganisation de Daech et d’assurer ainsi sa défaite durable :

Sur le plateau d’Hawijah, les forces de sécurité irakiennes maintiennent leur effort. Engagées dans une vaste opération de contrôle de zone, les forces déployées ne rencontrent qu’une faible résistance ;

A Bagdad, Mossoul, et dans la province de Ninive, les opérations menées ont permis la découverte de caches, souterrains, matériels et munitions, démontrant que l’organisation conserve des moyens d’action et que les opérations en cours doivent être poursuivies afin d’assurer de manière pérenne la sécurisation et la stabilisation du pays ;

Dans la vallée de l’Euphrate, les forces de sécurité irakiennes restent mobilisées, notamment autour de la ville d’Al Qaim.

Renforcement de la protection de la frontière irako-syrienne



La protection de la frontière irako-syrienne reste également une préoccupation. La 8ème division irakienne a mené la semaine passée une série d’opérations visant à sécuriser la frontière et mettre fin aux tentatives d’intrusion terroristes depuis la Syrie.

Retour progressif à la vie normale des populations déplacées



En Irak, le retour des réfugiés s’organise grâce aux efforts combinés du ministère pour l’immigration et des autorités militaires irakiennes.

En Syrie, la situation humanitaire s’améliore également. Le Haut-Commissariat des Nations unies pour les réfugiés (UNHCR) a ainsi rendu compte qu’environ 34 000 civils seraient revenus dans Raqqa au mois de décembre.

Suivi et accompagné par la Coalition



Dans ce cadre, le général Parisot, Senior National Représentative (SNR) français, également en charge des actions civilo-militaires de l’état-major de la Coalition, s’est rendu en Syrie en fin d’année dernière. Il y a rencontré des représentants des conseils civils de Raqqa et de Tabqah, et visité le quartier général de l’entreprise de déminage TETRATECH. Au cours de ces visites, il a pu identifier les besoins prioritaires des populations locales auxquels la Coalition est susceptible de pouvoir répondre.

ACTIVITE DE LA FORCE



la Task Force Wagram en appui des opérations de sécurisation

La Task Force Wagram poursuit son appui aux opérations de sécurisation menées dans la vallée de l’Euphrate. Cette semaine, quatre missions de tirs ont été réalisées au profit des forces de sécurité irakiennes (2 missions d’éclairement et 2 missions d’interdiction – bilan du 3 au 9 janvier).

Depuis le début de sa mission, la TF Wagram a réalisé 1602 missions de tirs.

Activité aérienne

Cette semaine, l’activité aérienne s’est concentrée sur des missions de renseignement au profit des forces de sécurité irakiennes et des forces démocratiques syriennes. Les missions ont principalement eu lieu en Syrie, dans le secteur d’Abou Kamal.

Elle a donné lieu à 12 sorties aériennes (bilan du 3 au 9 janvier). Aucune frappe n’a été réalisée.

A noter l’arrivée cette semaine sur la base aérienne projetée en Jordanie d’un ATL2 qui vient compléter les capacités de recueil de renseignement du dispositif, actuellement composé de quatre Rafale Air auxquels il convient d’ajouter les six Rafale opérant depuis la base aérienne aux Emirats Arabes Unis.

Bilan total depuis le 19/09/14 :

7653 sorties / 1426 frappes / 2214 objectifs neutralisés.

Wednesday 10 January – a Reaper hit three terrorist targets in eastern Syria, whilst Tornados destroyed an armed truck…The following day [January 10th], another Reaper worked closely with coalition surveillance aircraft and fast jets in a series of strikes in support of the SDF advance. Our aircraft supported coalition air attacks on a Daesh-held building and a mortar position, and conducted three attacks with its own Hellfire missiles, destroying an armed truck parked under cover of a vehicle shelter, and hitting two groups of terrorists on foot. A flight of Tornado GR4s also took part in this operation, and targeted an armed truck positioned within a compound; the use of a Brimstone missile allowed the vehicle to be destroyed without posing a risk to nearby buildings.

Tuesday 9 January – a Reaper struck two groups of terrorists in eastern Syria…Reaper operations over the Euphrates valley continued on Tuesday 9 January, when one of our aircraft spotted a group of armed terrorists on a rooftop north-east of Hajin, observing Syrian Democratic Forces’ positions through binoculars. A Hellfire missile successfully struck the group, and a second missile was later used to eliminate another Daesh group who had taken up position within a building.

Monday 8 January – a Reaper conducted four attacks on terrorists in eastern Syria whilst supporting the Syrian Democratic Forces, whilst Typhoons demolished a Daesh command post…Operations by the Syrian Democratic Forces to clear Daesh from the Euphrates valley in eastern Syria have continued to receive extensive support from Royal Air Force aircraft flying reconnaissance and close air support missions. A Reaper tracked terrorists manoeuvring to the north-east of Abu Kamal on Monday 8 January, and conducted four successful attacks, with three Hellfire missiles and a GBU-12 guided bomb, against extremists on foot and a Daesh pair moving at high speed on a motorcycle across the desert. Two Typhoon FGR4s were also active over the area on the same day, and they used Paveway IV guided bombs to demolish a building which had been identified as a terrorist command post.

Sunday 7 January – a Reaper struck terrorists in eastern Syria, whilst Typhoons hit a cave in Iraq, where a group of Daesh extremists were hiding…Sunday 7 January saw a Reaper once again working with coalition fast jets over the Euphrates, in support of the SDF. The Reaper observed a group of terrorists assembling under a tree, around twenty miles south-east of Mayadin, allowing a prompt and effective strike by another coalition aircraft, then delivered a further attack using one of its own Hellfire missiles. Following the defeat of Daesh in Iraq, coalition aircraft have remained on-call to support the Iraqi security forces as necessary to prevent any attempts by the terrorists to mount further operations in the country, and on Sunday a Typhoon flight was tasked to deal with a group of extremists who had been tracked to a cave some twelve miles north-east of Bayji. A direct hit was achieved with a Paveway IV, killing several terrorists in and around the cave entrance.

Saturday 6 January – Typhoons attacked accommodation used by Daesh, including local commanders, in eastern Syria…On Saturday 6 January, two Typhoons conducted a night attack on an isolated building some seven miles north-east of Abu Kamal, used as accommodation by Daesh extremists, including local commanders. A pair of Paveway IVs destroyed the target.

Between Dec. 29, 2017 and Jan. 4, 2018 Coalition military forces conducted 58 strikes consisting of 84 engagements against ISIS terrorists in Syria and Iraq.

On Jan. 4 in Syria, Coalition military forces conducted four strikes consisting of five engagements against ISIS targets.

• Near Abu Kamal, four strikes engaged an ISIS tactical unit and destroyed an ISIS supply route, a fighting position and a VBIED.

There were no reported strikes conducted in Iraq on Jan. 4, 2018.

On Jan. 3 in Syria, Coalition military forces conducted nine strikes consisting of 12 engagements against ISIS targets.

On Dec. 31 in Iraq, Coalition military forces conducted one strike consisting of four engagements against ISIS targets.

• Near Bayji, one strike engaged an ISIS tactical unit and destroyed an ISIS fighting position.

On Dec. 30 in Syria, Coalition military forces conducted 10 strikes consisting of 17 engagements against ISIS targets.

• Near Abu Kamal, 10 strikes engaged nine ISIS tactical units and destroyed two ISIS command and control centers, a fighting position, an ISIS headquarters and two ISIS vehicles.

On Dec. 30 in Iraq, Coalition military forces conducted three strikes consisting of seven engagements against ISIS targets.

• Near Bayji, one strike engaged and ISIS tactical unit and destroyed an ISIS tunnel system.

• Near Mosul, two strikes engaged an ISIS tactical unit and destroyed five ISIS fighting positions, two tunnel entrances and a weapons cache.

On Dec. 29 in Syria, Coalition military forces conducted 10 strikes consisting of 15 engagements against ISIS targets.

• Near Abu Kamal, 10 strikes engaged nine ISIS tactical units and destroyed nine ISIS fighting positions and two logistics centers.

There were no reported strikes conducted in Iraq on Dec. 29, 2017.

CHAMMAL
VISITE DU Chef d’état-major des armées SUR LA BASE AERIENNE PROJETEE AU LEVANT
Lundi 1er janvier 2018 le général d’armée François Lecointre, après avoir rendu visite la veille aux militaires déployés au Liban dans le cadre de l’opération DAMAN, a présenté ses vœux aux personnels engagés sur la base aérienne projetée (BAP) au Levant.
« L’essentiel des coups portés l’ont été à partir de la BAP » a déclaré le CEMA durant son discours d’ouverture, « la BAP a permis de défaire Daech. Je voulais vous dire que vous pouvez être fiers, votre action a été déterminante». Le général Lecointre a souligné que l’action des armées a non seulement permis de défaire Daech mais également de renforcer les liens avec les alliés de la France.
« Nous pensons à vos familles, c’est toujours une situation un peu douloureuse. Je vous souhaite une très bonne année » a conclu le CEMA.
Le général Lecointre a ensuite visité les installations de la base aérienne avant d’aller à la rencontre du personnel déployé pour échanger avec chaque militaire présent.

SITUATION MILITAIRE DU THEATRE
Bien que Daech n’existe plus en tant que proto-Etat, la menace terroriste perdure. En Syrie, Daech contrôle encore plusieurs points du territoire, tandis que les opérations de sécurisation se poursuivrent en Irak.
Poursuite des combats en Syrie
En Syrie, après une pause opérationnelle liée à de mauvaises conditions météos, les combats se poursuivent en se concentrant le long de l’Euphrate où plusieurs poches daechies importantes subsistent dans la région située entre Abu Kamal et Al Mayadin.
Malgré une défense farouche des terroristes, les forces démocratiques syriennes ont pris pied cette semaine dans la localité d’Abu Hammam.
Opérations de sécurisation et de contrôle de zone en Irak
En Irak, les forces de sécurité irakiennes restent mobilisées pour contrer toute tentative terroriste de déstabilisation de la situation. La semaine écoulée depuis Noël a été marquée par la poursuite des opérations de sécurisation, de fouille et de contrôle de zone.
Ces opérations se concentrent notamment autour des grandes villes de l’est du pays et sur le plateau d’Hawijah où une opération de ratissage a été menée dans la région des Monts Hamrin pour en chasser les groupes terroristes qui y avaient trouvé refuge.
En parallèle les forces de sécurité irakiennes s’attachent à consolider leur contrôle de la frontière irako-syrienne en renforçant leur dispositif déployé dans les dernières semaines de 2017.

Activité aérienne
Cette semaine, l’activité aérienne s’est concentrée sur des missions de renseignement et de reconnaissance armée.
Elle a donné lieu à 18 sorties aériennes (bilan du 28 décembre au 03 janvier) au cours desquelles une frappe a été réalisée en Syrie en appui de l’action des Forces Démocratiques Syriennes pour s’emparer de Abu Hammam.
Au total, depuis le 19 septembre 2014, le bilan de l’activité aérienne s’élève à 7641 sorties, 1426 frappes et 2214 objectifs neutralises.

Nederlandse F-16’s weer actief boven Irak en Oost-Syrië

Nederlandse F-16’s hebben vandaag hun eerste operationele vlucht gemaakt boven Irak en Oost-Syrië. De jachtvliegtuigen maken deel uit van de coalitie die ISIS militair wil verslaan. Bij het vertrek waren minister Ank Bijleveld-Schouten en Commandant Luchtstrijdkrachten luitenant-generaal Dennis Luyt aanwezig.

Minister Bijleveld benadrukte nut en de noodzaak van deelname aan de coalitie. “ISIS is bijna verslagen, maar de strijd is nog niet voorbij. De dreiging en ideologie van ISIS zijn nog niet verdwenen. Irak heeft nog steeds steun nodig om ISIS te verslaan, heroverde gebieden te stabiliseren en de terugkeer van ISIS te voorkomen.”

Samenwerking met Jordanië

Bijleveld arriveerde gistermiddag in Jordanië en bracht eerst een bezoek aan minister-president Hani al-Mulki. Zij spraken over veiligheidskwesties en politieke ontwikkelingen in de regio en de samenwerking tussen Jordanië en Nederland. Vandaag bezocht zij het Nederlandse detachement en sprak daar uitgebreid met personeel.

Verschuiving

Volgens Commandant Luchtstrijdkrachten Dennis Luyt verandert wel de operationele inzet van de jachtvliegtuigen. “In de eerdere fases van de strijd lag de nadruk meer op geplande doelen zoals munitiedepots, opslagplaatsen en ISIS hoofdkwartieren. Nu verschuift dat meer naar ondersteuning van de grondtroepen en informatievergaring.”

“De Iraakse en coalitiestrijdkrachten leunen zwaar op ondersteuning vanuit de lucht. Jachtvliegtuigen hebben hoe dan ook een afschrikwekkende functie. We moeten er als coalitie echt voor waken te vroeg te vertrekken uit Irak”, aldus minister Bijleveld vanuit Jordanië.

Training Iraakse veiligheidstroepen

Nederland doet meer in de strijd tegen ISIS. In Irak trainen ongeveer 150 instructeurs de Iraakse veiligheidstroepen en Koerdische Peshmerga-strijders. Bijleveld wijst erop dat met militaire inzet alleen de strijd tegen ISIS niet is winnen. “Zo is het van groot belang dat we ons ook blijven richten op het stoppen van de stroom buitenlandse strijders, het aanpakken van inkomstenbronnen van ISIS en het ontkrachten van de ISIS-ideologie.”

Eind vorig jaar kwam er groen licht voor de verlenging van de Nederlandse deelname in de strijd tegen ISIS. De F-16’s kwamen boven Irak ook al van oktober 2014 tot juli 2016 in actie. Vanaf het eerste kwartaal van 2016 voerden de F-16’s naast Irak ook missies uit boven Oost-Syrië.
