De in Jordanië gestationeerde Nederlandse F-16’s hebben ter ondersteuning van grondtroepen een ISIS-opstelling aangevallen. Dit gebeurde nabij de stad Abu Kamal in de provincie Dayr az Zawr in het oosten van Syrië. Nederland neemt boven Irak en Oost-Syrië in coalitieverband deel aan de strijd tegen terreurorganisatie ISIS. Een overzicht van Defensieoperaties in de week van 3 tot en met 9 januari 2018.

De jachtvliegtuigen ondersteunden grondtroepen tijdens 6 missies, waarvan 4 boven de Iraakse provincies Ninawa, Sala ad-Din en Anbar en in de omgeving van Kirkuk. De 5e was boven Oost-Syrië. Alleen tijdens de 6e missie in Oost-Syrië zijn wapens ingezet.

6 F-16-gevechtsvliegtuigen zijn woensdagochtend vertrokken vanaf Vliegbasis Volkel naar het Midden-Oosten. De Nederlandse toestellen nemen daar deel aan de internationale coalitie die strijdt tegen terreurorganisatie ISIS.

De F-16’s, waaronder 2 reservetoestellen, opereren vanuit Jordanië. Het is de 2e keer dat Nederland jachtvliegtuigen inzet tegen IS. De vorige keer was van oktober 2014 tot juli 2016. Toen loste België Nederland af. Nu is het andersom. Eind vorig jaar kwam er groen licht voor de nieuwe Nederlandse deelname. Eerder vandaag en vorige week vertrokken al 150 militairen van het F-16 detachement vanaf vliegbasis Eindhoven.

Nog altijd behoefte

Ondanks dat de islamitische terreurorganisatie bijna is verslagen, is de strijd nog niet volledig gestreden. De dreiging blijft. Er is dan ook nog altijd behoefte aan jachtvliegtuigen bij de coalitie.

De Koninklijke Luchtmacht zette daarnaast een force protection detachement in. Deze beschermde de Belgische F-16-eenheid. Ook leverde de luchtmacht een KDC-10-tankervliegtuig en C-130 Hercules-transportvliegtuig.

On On Dec. 31, Coalition military forces conducted 28 strikes against ISIL terrorists in Syria and Iraq. In Syria, Coalition military forces conducted 19 strikes using attack, fighter and remotely piloted aircraft against ISIL targets. Additionally in Iraq, Coalition military forces conducted nine strikes coordinated with and in support of the government of Iraq using attack, bomber, fighter, rotary, and remotely piloted aircraft against ISIL targets.

Syria

• Near Abu Kamal, one strike destroyed an oil tanker truck. • Near Al Shadaddi, one strike destroyed a VBIED.
• Near Ar Raqqah, 15 strikes engaged nine ISIL tactical units; destroyed four VBIEDs, eight fighting positions, two heavy machine guns, and a supply route; and damaged an ISIL tactical vehicle.
• Near Ayn Isa, two strikes engaged an ISIL tactical unit and destroyed a fighting position and an antiair artillery piece.

Iraq

• Near Bayji, one strike engaged an ISIL tactical unit and destroyed a rocket rail.
• Near Haditha, two strikes damaged four ISIL defensive berms.
• Near Kisik, one strike engaged an ISIL tactical unit and an ISIL tactical vehicle.
• Near Mosul, three strikes engaged three ISIL tactical units; destroyed three front-end loaders, a bulldozer, five mortars, two supply caches, a truck, inoperable coalition equipment, two VBIEDs, and a barge; suppressed three ISIL mortar teams; and damaged 19 ISIL supply routes and a defensive berm.

On Saturday 31 December, Reaper remotely piloted aircraft from the Royal Air Force were operating over Iraq. A Reaper aircraft enabled the destruction of a Daesh mortar position which was firing on Iraqi ground troops. The Reaper’s reconnaissance enabled a coalition aircraft to successfully remove the imminent terrorist threat to the Iraqi forces.

Between Dec. 29, 2017 and Jan. 4, 2018 Coalition military forces conducted 58 strikes consisting of 84 engagements against ISIS terrorists in Syria and Iraq.

On Jan. 4 in Syria, Coalition military forces conducted four strikes consisting of five engagements against ISIS targets.

• Near Abu Kamal, four strikes engaged an ISIS tactical unit and destroyed an ISIS supply route, a fighting position and a VBIED.

There were no reported strikes conducted in Iraq on Jan. 4, 2018.

On Jan. 3 in Syria, Coalition military forces conducted nine strikes consisting of 12 engagements against ISIS targets.

• Near Abu Kamal, nine strikes engaged five ISIS tactical units and destroyed two ISIS lines of communication, a heavy weapon, four fighting positions, an ISIS vehicle, a logistics center and an ISIS supply route.

There were no reported strikes conducted in Iraq on Jan. 3, 2018.

On Jan. 2 in Syria, Coalition military forces conducted nine strikes consisting of 10 engagements against ISIS targets.

• Near Abu Kamal, nine strikes engaged two ISIS tactical units and destroyed an ISIS supply route, an indirect fire weapon, two fighting positions, two heavy machine guns, two UAVs and an ISIS line of communication.

There were no reported strikes conducted in Iraq on Jan. 2, 2018.

On Jan. 1 in Syria, Coalition military forces conducted four strikes consisting of six engagements against ISIS targets.

• Near Abu Kamal, four strikes engaged an ISIS tactical unit and destroyed an ISIS command and control center, two fighting positions, an ISIS vehicle, two heavy machine guns and three ISIS tunnel entrances.

There were no reported strikes conducted in Iraq on Jan. 1, 2018.

On Dec. 31 in Syria, Coalition military forces conducted eight strikes consisting of eight engagements against ISIS targets.

• Near Abu Kamal, eight strikes engaged five ISIS tactical units and destroyed a heavy weapon, an ISIS headquarters, eight ISIS supply routes, a fighting position and two ISIS-held buildings.

On Dec. 31 in Iraq, Coalition military forces conducted one strike consisting of four engagements against ISIS targets.

• Near Bayji, one strike engaged an ISIS tactical unit and destroyed an ISIS fighting position.

On Dec. 30 in Syria, Coalition military forces conducted 10 strikes consisting of 17 engagements against ISIS targets.

• Near Abu Kamal, 10 strikes engaged nine ISIS tactical units and destroyed two ISIS command and control centers, a fighting position, an ISIS headquarters and two ISIS vehicles.

On Dec. 30 in Iraq, Coalition military forces conducted three strikes consisting of seven engagements against ISIS targets.

• Near Bayji, one strike engaged and ISIS tactical unit and destroyed an ISIS tunnel system.

• Near Mosul, two strikes engaged an ISIS tactical unit and destroyed five ISIS fighting positions, two tunnel entrances and a weapons cache.

On Dec. 29 in Syria, Coalition military forces conducted 10 strikes consisting of 15 engagements against ISIS targets.

• Near Abu Kamal, 10 strikes engaged nine ISIS tactical units and destroyed nine ISIS fighting positions and two logistics centers.

There were no reported strikes conducted in Iraq on Dec. 29, 2017.

Friday 29 December – Tornados dealt with two terrorist positions from which fire was being directed at the Syrian Democratic Forces in the east of the country…Two flights of Tornados flew close air support for the Syrian Democratic Forces the following day [Dec 29th], despite difficult weather conditions; one flight employed a Paveway IV to destroy a building from which fire was being directed at close range against the SDF, whilst the second pair of Tornados engaged through cloud a group of terrorists engaged in street fighting; a Paveway removed the threat to the SDF.

Between Dec. 22 and Dec. 28, Coalition military forces conducted 46 strikes consisting of 93 engagements against ISIS terrorists in Syria and Iraq.

On Dec. 28 in Syria, Coalition military forces conducted nine strikes consisting of 17 engagements against ISIS targets.

• Near Abu Kamal, eight strikes [1 British] engaged eight ISIS tactical units and destroyed an ISIS-held building and a staging area.

• Near Al Shadaddi, one strike destroyed a UAV.

On Dec. 28 in Iraq, Coalition military forces conducted one strike consisting of four engagements against ISIS targets.

• Near Jalula, one strike engaged an ISIS tactical unit and destroyed an ISIS cave entrance.

On Dec. 27 in Syria, Coalition military forces conducted 10 strikes consisting of 22 engagements against ISIS targets.

• Near Abu Kamal, 10 strikes engaged 10 ISIS tactical units and destroyed three ISIS vehicles, a heavy machine gun, an ISIS line of communication and a logistics center.

On Dec. 27 in Iraq, Coalition military forces conducted two strikes consisting of four engagements against ISIS targets.

Thursday 28 December – Tornados destroyed two buildings within a Daesh defensive position in eastern Syria…Tornado GR4s, flying from RAF Akrotiri and, as ever, supported by a Voyager air refuelling tanker, flew an armed reconnaissance mission over the Euphrates on Thursday 28 December. Their attention was directed to a Daesh defensive position, consisting of two buildings surrounded by earthworks, at a remote spot north-east of Abu Kamal, close to the border with Iraq. Our aircraft demolished both of the buildings with a pair of Paveway IVs.

Monthly Civilian Casualty Report

SOUTHWEST ASIA – Over the past month, Iraqi Security Forces conducted multiple operations to ensure the security of their people, land and borders. These operations included clearance of desert areas where Daesh was hiding after fleeing ISF operations in populated areas. ISF also conducted successful clearing and security operations in Mosul, Tal Afar, Hawijah and Baghdad, and operations are still ongoing in Salah al-Din.
After more than three years of hard fighting, the government of Iraq declared the liberation of former Daesh-controlled areas Dec. 10. The following day, Iraqi Security Forces linked up with Syrian Democratic Forces at the border near Al Qaim, Iraq, demonstrating each force’s intent to provide security in border regions, enabling commerce and travel while preventing Daesh terrorists from continuing to flee the battlefield.
Despite a string of successes by Iraqi Security Forces and Syrian Democratic Forces, much work remains to ensure the enduring defeat of Daesh. The terrorist organization is still attempting to reestablish regional networks and remains a regional and global threat through its ability to organize or inspire acts of violence against innocent people around the world.
In Syria, the Coalition and our SDF partners continue to decisively engage large groups of terrorists in the Middle Euphrates River Valley and southern Syria. Over the past month, there were two reported incidents of groups of terrorists crossing from regime-controlled area into Coalition-controlled areas of southern Syria. In both events, the Coalition and our SDF partners decisively engaged the threat and
killed Daesh terrorists.
Although increased security resulted in historic low Coalition strike numbers in November and December, Daesh has demonstrated both its ability and its intent to reorganize and attack the Iraqi and Syrian people. The Coalition will thus continue to support our partners’ operations to defeat Daesh and prevent its resurgence.
In the month of November, CJTF-OIR carried over 695 open reports of possible civilian casualties from previous months and received 9 new reports resulting from Coalition strikes (artillery or air) in support of partner force operations to defeat ISIS in Iraq and Syria.

During this period, the Coalition completed the assessment of 101 reports: 92 were assessed to be noncredible, none were assessed to be duplicates of previous reports, and nine were assessed to be credible, resulting in 11 unintentional civilian deaths. To date, based on information available, CJTFOIR assesses at least 817 civilians have been unintentionally killed by Coalition strikes since the start of Operation Inherent Resolve. A total of 603 reports are still open.
The Coalition conducted a total of 28,562 strikes that included 57,336 separate engagements between August 2014 and November 2017. During this period, the total number of reports of possible civilian casualties was 1,799. The total number of credible reports of civilian casualties during this time period was 208. The percent of engagements that resulted in a report of possible civilian casualties was
3.13%. The percent of engagements that resulted in a credible report of civilian casualties was .36%. After a thorough review of the facts and circumstances of each civilian casualty report, CJTF-OIR assessed the following 92 reports as non-credible: at this time there is insufficient information to assess that, more likely than not, a Coalition strike resulted in civilian casualties.

Although the Coalition takes extraordinary efforts to strike military targets in a manner that minimizes the risk of civilian casualties, in some incidents casualties are unavoidable. Nine reports were assessed to be credible resulting in the unintentional death of 11 civilians. The Coalition also added five unintentional civilian deaths from past reports previously excluded from the count.
A credible assessment means it is more likely than not a Coalition strike resulted in a civilian casualty.
In each of the incidents below, the investigation assessed that although all feasible precautions were
taken and the decision to strike complied with the law of armed conflict, unintended civilian casualties unfortunately occurred.

Saturday 23 December – a Reaper struck terrorists trying to conceal themselves in an outbuilding in eastern Syria…Royal Air Force aircraft flew operational sorties against Daesh terrorists on every day of the winter holiday period, with the major focus remaining the provision of reconnaissance and close air support to the Syrian Democratic Forces in and around the Euphrates valley. A Reaper remotely piloted aircraft worked closely with coalition jets on Saturday 23 December near Abu Hammam. The Reaper’s crew provided surveillance support to a coalition air strike on a Daesh-occupied building, then tracked a small group of terrorists as they attempted to seek shelter in an outbuilding nearby. Having checked the area carefully for any signs of civilians who might be placed at risk, the Reaper’s crew then conducted a successful attack with a Hellfire missile, which destroyed the outbuilding and its occupants.

On 23 Dec 17, Australian F/A-18 Hornets supported Iraqi Security Forces during operations in the vicinity of Bayji. The Australian aircraft struck two Daesh fighting positions with guided munitions.

Sunday 17 December – Typhoons bombed a number of Daesh extremists in a building in eastern Syria…On Sunday 17 December, a pair of Typhoon FGR4s also provided support to the SDF in the Euphrates valley, near Abu Hardub. A coalition surveillance aircraft observed a number of extremists taking up position in a building, and the Typhoons subsequently destroyed the target with a single Paveway IV guided bomb.

Poursuite des combats en Syrie

En Syrie, les combats se poursuivent au nord d’Al Qaim, sur la rive orientale de l’Euphrate, où plusieurs poches daechies importantes subsistent, notamment à Abou Hamam, le long de l’Euphrate, au nord-ouest d’Abou Kamal, et à Dashisha au nord d’Abou Kamal, le long de la frontière avec l’Irak.

Dans ces zones où les combats sont encore intenses, les forces démocratiques syriennes progressent quotidiennement.

Opérations de sécurisation et de contrôle de zone en Irak

En Irak, les forces de sécurité irakiennes restent mobilisées pour contrer toute velléité terroriste de déstabilisation d’une situation encore fragile. Elles sont actuellement engagées dans plusieurs opérations de sécurisation, de fouille ou de contrôle de zone sur tout le territoire. Ces opérations se concentrent le long de la frontière irako-syrienne, dans la vallée de l’Euphrate, autour des grandes villes de l’est du pays et sur le plateau d’Hawijah.

BILAN DE LA PARTICIPATION DE LA FRANCE A LA LIBERATION DE L’IRAK

L’annonce récente de la libération de l’Irak est l’occasion de dresser un bilan de la participation française à l’opération Inhérent Resolve :

Depuis le début de l’opération Chammal, 7 593 sorties aériennes ont été effectuées. Elles ont donné lieu à 1423 frappes qui ont permis de neutraliser 2211 objectifs. En Irak spécifiquement, 1300 frappes ont été réalisées pour 1900 objectifs neutralisés ;

Depuis septembre 2016, la Task Force Wagram a mené 1592 missions de tirs d’artillerie en appui des forces armées irakiennes. Ces derniers mois, elle a accompagné les forces de sécurité irakiennes dans tous leurs derniers combats ;

Depuis avril 2015, plus de 7500 soldats irakiens ont été formés par les militaires français. Parmi eux, près de 5700 appartiennent à l’ICTS, unité d’élite qui a participé à la majeure partie des batailles pour la libération de l’Irak.

Friday 15 December – a Reaper conducted attacks on two groups of terrorists in eastern Syria, and assisted a coalition air strike that destroyed a vehicle and mortar…Another Reaper flew a similar mission in the area on Friday 15 December. It spotted several terrorists occupying a compound and hit them with a Hellfire missile. A second group of terrorists then attempted to take up firing positions in the same compound, and were also struck with a Hellfire. Later in the day, the Reaper’s crew tracked a group of men acting suspiciously around a area of trees, and close observation identified a truck, carrying a mortar, camouflaged under the trees. The Reaper was able to pinpoint the position for coalition jets which delivered an accurate attack which destroyed the vehicle and mortar.

Cette semaine a été marquée par l’annonce par le premier ministre irakien de la libération de l’Irak et de la fin de la guerre contre l’Etat Islamique. Cette annonce fait suite à l’achèvement de la dernière opération d’ampleur dans le désert de Jézirah et à la reprise par les forces de sécurité irakiennes du contrôle de l’ensemble de la frontière entre l’Irak et la Syrie. La victoire militaire sur l’Etat Islamique ne signifie cependant pas la fin des opérations militaires ni strictement la fin des combats.

Des poches terroristes subsistantes en Syrie

En Syrie, le long de la frontière irako-syrienne, Daech contrôle encore quelques poches que les forces de sécurité syriennes s’attachent à réduire. Les combats y sont encore intenses, notamment dans le nord-ouest d’Abou Kamal, sur la rive orientale de l’Euphrate.

EFFORT DE LA COALITION

Poursuite du soutien aux forces locales

En Irak, l’effort de la coalition porte sur le soutien aux forces de sécurité irakiennes actuellement impliquées dans des opérations de sécurisation et de stabilisation.

En Syrie, la coalition poursuit son soutien aux forces démocratiques syriennes engagées dans des combats contre plusieurs poches terroristes restantes situées sur la rive orientale de l’Euphrate.

Préparation de la période hivernale pour les réfugiés

Avec l’arrivée de la période hivernale, la coalition s’attache à mettre en place les conditions permettant aux nombreux réfugiés et déplacés de passer l’hiver dans les meilleures conditions possibles. Ces opérations sont dirigées par le général Parisot, Senior National Représentative français, dont l’une des attributions est également de diriger la cellule en charge des actions civilo-militaires de l’état-major de l’opération Inherent Resolve. Dans ce cadre, trois C-17 américains ont récemment acheminé de l’aide humanitaire à Raqqa qui reste néanmoins infestée d’engins explosifs improvisés malgré les travaux de dépollution en cours.

ACTIVITE DE LA FORCE

la Task Force Wagram en appui des dernières opérations de sécurisation

La Task Force Wagram poursuit son appui aux opérations de sécurisation menées dans la vallée de l’Euphrate. Cette semaine, deux missions de tirs ont été réalisées au profit des forces de sécurité irakiennes (bilan du 6 au 10 décembre).

Depuis le début de sa mission, la TF Wagram, a réalisé 1589 missions de tirs.

Activité aérienne

Cette semaine, l’activité aérienne s’est concentrée sur des missions de renseignement au profit des forces de sécurité irakiennes et des forces démocratiques syriennes.

Elle a donné lieu à 20 sorties aériennes (bilan du 06 au 10 décembre). Au cours de ces sorties aucune frappe n’a été réalisée.

Bilan total depuis le 19/09/14 :

7561 sorties / 1422 frappes / 2209 objectifs neutralisés.

Military Strikes Continue Against ISIS Terrorists in Syria and Iraq

SOUTHWEST ASIA – Between Dec. 11 and Dec. 14, Coalition military forces conducted 42 strikes consisting of 53 engagements against ISIS terrorists in Syria and Iraq.

On Dec. 14 in Syria, Coalition military forces conducted 10 strikes consisting of 13 engagements against ISIS targets.

• Near Abu Kamal, nine strikes engaged six ISIS tactical units and destroyed six ISIS vehicles and a fighting position.

• Near At Tanf, one strike destroyed a weapons cache and two ISIS caves.

There were no reported strikes conducted in Iraq on Dec. 14, 2017.

On Dec. 13 in Syria, Coalition military forces conducted 14 strikes consisting of 17 engagements against ISIS targets.

• Near Abu Kamal, nine strikes engaged nine ISIS tactical units and destroyed three ISIS vehicles and an ISIS headquarters.

• Near At Tanf, five strikes engaged three ISIS tactical units and destroyed three ISIS vehicles, four cave entrances and a tactical vehicle.

On Dec. 13 in Iraq, Coalition military forces conducted two strikes consisting of two engagements against ISIS targets.

• Near Rutbah, one strike engaged an ISIS tactical unit and destroyed an ISIS vehicle.

• Near Tuz, one strike engaged an ISIS tactical unit and destroyed two ISIS tents and a bunker.

On Dec. 12 in Syria, Coalition military forces conducted seven strikes consisting of seven engagements against ISIS targets.

• Near Abu Kamal, seven strikes [1 British?] ngaged seven ISIS tactical units and destroyed two ISIS vehicles and a heavy weapon.

On Dec. 12 in Iraq, Coalition military forces conducted two strikes consisting of two engagements against ISIS targets.

• Near Al Baghdadi, one strike engaged an ISIS tactical unit.

• Near Rutbah, one strike destroyed two ISIS-held buildings.

On Dec. 11 in Syria, Coalition military forces conducted six strikes consisting of seven engagements against ISIS targets.

• Near Abu Kamal, six strikes engaged five ISIS tactical units and destroyed three heavy weapons.

On Dec. 11 in Iraq, Coalition military forces conducted one strike consisting of five engagements against ISIS targets.

• Near Hawayjah, one strike engaged an ISIS tactical unit and destroyed two ISIS meeting facilities.

Tuesday 12 December – a Reaper struck a group of terrorists firing on the Syrian Democratic Forces in the east of the country…The Syrian Democratic Forces have continued to clear a number of villages held by Daesh along the Euphrates in eastern Syria, between Abu Kamal and Mayadin. Royal Air Force Reapers have provided significant support to these operations, their very long endurance, precision weaponry and advanced surveillance equipment allowing them to maintain effective overwatch for the SDF advances on the ground. On Tuesday 12 December, a Reaper identified a small group of Daesh extremists firing on the SDF. The Reaper’s crew kept very close watch on a number of civilians, including women and children, who were evacuating the village, and waited until they were clear of the area before conducting a successful attack on the terrorists with a Hellfire missile.

SOUTHWEST ASIA – Between Dec. 8 and Dec. 10, Coalition military forces conducted 14 strikes consisting of 27 engagements against ISIS terrorists in Syria and Iraq.

On Dec. 10 in Syria, Coalition military forces conducted eight strikes consisting of 13 engagements against ISIS targets.

• Near Abu Kamal, eight strikes engaged eight ISIS tactical units and destroyed two fighting positions, a mortar system, a tactical vehicle and an ISIS headquarters.

There were no reported strikes conducted in Iraq on Dec. 10, 2017.

On Dec. 9 in Syria, Coalition military forces conducted three strikes consisting of five engagements against ISIS targets.

• Near Abu Kamal, two strikes engaged two ISIS tactical units and destroyed an ISIS vehicle and an ISIS line of communication.

• Near Al Shadaddi, one strike engaged an ISIS mortar team.

On Dec. 9 in Iraq, Coalition military forces conducted one strike consisting of six engagements against ISIS targets.

• Near Tuz, one strike engaged an ISIS tactical unit and destroyed an ISIS truck.

On Dec. 8 in Syria, Coalition military forces conducted two strikes consisting of three engagements against ISIS targets.

• Near Abu Kamal, two strikes engaged an ISIS tactical unit and destroyed a tactical vehicle and a fighting position.

There were no reported strikes conducted in Iraq against ISIS targets on Dec. 8, 2017.

Sunday 10 December – a Reaper conducted a strike in eastern Syria, and supported multiple attacks by coalition aircraft whilst supporting the Syrian Democratic Forces…On Sunday 10 December, a Reaper provided further support to the Syrian Democratic Forces in eastern Syria. Our aircraft tracked various groups of terrorists which allowed them to be struck by a series of attacks by coalition fast jets, and conducted one attack using its own Hellfire weaponry.
