Friday 26 May – Tornados cratered two roads in Mosul to hamper terrorist movements…The following day [May 26th] , Tornados used two Paveways to crater roads in west Mosul to hamper any attempt by Daesh to move truck-bombs against the latest Iraqi advance.

Thursday 25 May – a Reaper destroyed an armoured personnel carrier west of Raqqa, Typhoons bombed a radio station east of Palmyra, Tornados attacked five targets in Mosul, and a combined Tornado and Typhoon flight destroyed an armoured truck north-west of Bayji…Intelligence confirmed that Daesh were using a small radio relay station east of Palmyra to spread their propaganda. A pair of Typhoons attacked the site on Thursday 25 May and successfully put it out of action with Paveway IVs. Further north in Syria, a Reaper used a Hellfire missile to destroy an armoured personnel carrier near Tabqah, to the west of Raqqa. Two flights of Tornados patrolled over Mosul, where they conducted Paveway IV attacks on two medium machine-gun positions and three other Daesh-held buildings, whilst a mixed Tornado/Typhoon pair used a Brimstone missile to destroy an armoured truck some 30 miles north-west of Bayji.

Coalition removes ISIS leaders from battlefield

SOUTHWEST ASIA – Coalition airstrikes have removed senior ISIS military officials and planners from the battlefield.

The elimination of three senior foreign fighters represents a significant degradation of the ISIS planning and operational capability.

Mustafa Gunes, a Syria-based ISIS external operations facilitator from Turkey, was killed by a coalition airstrike near Mayadin, Syria, 27 April. He was identified as an ISIS recruiter in the central Turkish city of Konya. Gunes was linked to facilitating financial support for planning attacks outside Syria and Iraq against the West.

Abu Asim al-Jazaeri, an ISIS external operations planner and a Syria-based French-Algerian ISIS fighter, was killed by a Coalition airstrike near Mayadin, Syria, May 11. Al-Jazaeri was involved in training a new generation of ISIS youths, called the Cubs of the Caliphate, a high priority training program sanctioned by ISIS leadership.

Abu-Khattab al-Rawi, a senior ISIS military official, was killed during an operation near Al-Qaim in Iraq, 18 May. Al-Rawi was killed along with three other terrorists. Al-Rawi was an ISIS military official who operated in Iraq’s Al Anbar Province and provided direct support to ISIS leadership. Al-Rawi was responsible for coordinating UAV operations and procurement in Al Anbar Province in Iraq.

The deaths of these men eliminates senior foreign fighters, who had extensive experience and training, and degrades ISIS’s ability to plan and conduct attacks on civilian targets in Iraq and Syria, as well throughout the region and in the West.

The Coalition will continue to degrade, disrupt, and dismantle ISIS structure, as well as exert pressure on its senior leaders and associates across multiple networks throughout Iraq and Syria.

On May 24, Coalition military forces conducted 34 strikes consisting of 78 engagements against ISIS terrorists in Syria and Iraq.

Wednesday 24 May – a Reaper attacked near Raqqa, whilst Tornados prosecuted four Daesh targets in Mosul…A Reaper, conducting surveillance south-west of Raqqa on Wednesday 24 May, kept watch on a small group of terrorists and was able to conduct a successful attack with a Hellfire missile. In Mosul, when advancing Iraqi security forces found themselves facing two buildings defended by a Daesh heavy machine-gun, a sniper team and at least one individual in a suicide-bomb vest, they called for assistance from a flight of Tornados. Our aircraft delivered a very precise simultaneous attack with two Paveway IVs which destroyed both terrorist strongpoints. The Tornados then hit a third terrorist position, again with a Paveway, whilst a second flight bombed a fourth position.

On 24 May, Australian F/A-18 Hornets supported Iraqi forces during operations in Mosul. The Australian aircraft struck a Daesh fighting position and a Daesh heavy weapon site with guided munitions over several hours of support.

CHAMMAL

APPRÉCIATION DE SITUATION

En Syrie, les opérations de dépollution de la ville de Tabqah se sont poursuivies toute la semaine tandis que la population continue de regagner ses habitations. Dans le secteur de Raqqah les forces démocratiques syriennes (FDS) continuent leur offensive de façon méthodique contre le dispositif de défense Daech établi dans la profondeur autour de la ville. Ce dispositif a de nouveau été percé en plusieurs endroits, permettant aux FDS de se rapprocher de la ville et d’isoler plusieurs groupes de combattants.

En Irak, Daech poursuit ses attaques de diversions dans l’Anbar contre les positions des forces de sécurité irakiennes (FSI).

Dans la région de Mossoul, la semaine a été

marquée par la poursuite de la progression des FSI dans tous les secteurs de la ville. L’étau continue de se resserrer autour de la Médina. Daech oppose une défense âpre aux combattants irakiens, en cherchant à replier le maximum de ses moyens dans la Médina où ses combattants ont leurs positions défensives les plus solides.

ACTIVITÉS DE LA FORCE CHAMMAL

Appui feu – TF Wagram

La Task Force (TF) Wagram a poursuivi cette semaine ses missions en appui de la 15e division irakienne en charge la sécurisation des abords Nord Ouest de la ville de Mossoul et notamment du secteur de Badush.

Elle a réalisé 43 missions de tir en appui des unités irakiennes, essentiellement d’éclairement pour contrer ou interdire les actions de harcèlement et d’infiltration de Daech.

Appui aérien au Levant

Cette semaine, les aéronefs de l’opération Chammal ont réalisé 23 sorties aériennes dont 20 de reconnaissance armée ou d’appui au sol (CAS) et 3 de recueil de renseignements.

7 frappes ont été réalisées par les avions français en Irak et en Syrie. Elles ont toutes été conduites en appui des opérations au sol dans le cadre des opérations contre Daech à Mossoul et Raqqah.

Pilier Formation : une nouvelle promotion de stagiaires formés par la TF Narvik diplômée de l’Iraki Counter Terrorism Service Academy.

Après plusieurs mois éprouvants à l’école de formation de l’Iraki Counter Terrorisme Service (ICTS) une nouvelle promotion de recrues à officiellement rejoint cette semaines les forces spéciales irakiennes.

Le chef de l’ « Academy » a pris la parole afin de féliciter chacun d’entre eux, louant les mérites de ses jeunes soldats ainsi que la hargne et les succès de l’ICTS sur le terrain à Mossoul, qu’ils rejoindront bientôt.

A l’issue de ce discours il a remis aux instructeurs français invités à le rejoindre un diplôme irakien officiel d’instructeur des forces spéciales.

Monday 22 May – Typhoons struck a large Daesh-held building near Raqqa, Tornados hit two terrorist positions in western Mosul…

The RAF is continuing to support Iraqi forces in their effort to liberate western Mosul. While the operating environment in the city is very challenging, particularly given the closely-packed buildings, very narrow streets, and the density of the urban population, our aircrew have continued to deliver precision strikes in close support of Iraqi troops on the ground. Daesh’s current tactics, including the illegal use of civilians as human shields, and fighting from sites such as schools, hospitals, religious sites and civilian neighbourhoods, increases the risk to innocent life. While no military operations come without risk, particularly in dense urban environments and against such inhuman Daesh tactics, the RAF continues to take all steps necessary to minimise civilian casualties.

Royal Air Force aircraft have continued to provide close air support to the Syrian Democratic Forces, and to Iraqi troops fighting to liberate the remaining areas of west Mosul held by Daesh. On Monday 22 May, Typhoon FGR4s assisted SDF engaged in close combat with a group of terrorists defending a large building some eight miles south-east of Raqqa; two Paveway IV guided bombs struck the building and eliminated the threat successfully. Tornado GR4s patrolled over Mosul, where they also used Paveway IVs to deal with two Daesh positions which the Iraqi forces encountered.

Over the period 01 – 18 May 2017, Air Task Group strike operations focused on supporting Iraqi Security Force operations to clear and secure Mosul from Daesh forces, with a focus on the West Mosul area. The rate of effort has increased since the previous report to align with Iraqi Security Forces offensive operations.

Sunday 21 May – Typhoons destroyed a weapons stockpile on the outskirts of Raqqa, Tornados dealt with a sniper and a heavy machine-gun in Mosul… The latter hit a further pair of targets in Mosul on Sunday 21 May, eliminating a sniper and a heavy machine-gun team. On the eastern outskirts of Raqqah, Typhoons destroyed a weapons stockpile.

Friday 19 May – Tornados struck seven Daesh targets in Mosul, whilst Typhoons bombed a group of extremists east of Raqqah…The following day [May 19th] , Tornados provided further support to the Iraqi ground forces, despite very challenging conditions as a dust storm raged. Again, a mixture of Brimstones and Paveway IVs were used to engage seven Daesh positions within the city, including a sniper team and a mortar, despite the Iraqi forces being extremely close to the targets on occasion. In Syria, Typhoons supported the SDF and bombed a group of terrorists caught in the open a few miles to the east of Raqqah.

On 19 May, Australian F/A-18 Hornets supported Iraqi forces during operations in Mosul. The Australian aircraft struck Daesh fighting positions with guided munitions over several hours of support.

On May 18, Coalition military forces conducted 27 strikes consisting of 65 engagements against ISIS terrorists in Syria and Iraq.

Thursday 18 May – Tornados and Typhoons attacked three terrorist positions in west Mosul…Both Typhoon and Tornado flights operated over Mosul on Thursday 18 May, and between them conducted three attacks, successfully using Paveway IVs and a Brimstone to target terrorist positions.

Coalition statement on At Tanf garrison

SOUTHWEST ASIA – The coalition struck pro-regime forces that were advancing well inside an established de-confliction zone northwest of At Tanf, Syria, May 18, and that posed a threat to U.S. and partner forces at At Tanf.

This action was taken after apparent Russian attempts to dissuade Syrian pro-regime movement south towards At Tanf were unsuccessful, a coalition aircraft show of force, and the firing of warning shots. Coalition forces have been operating in the At Tanf area for many months training and advising vetted partner forces engaged in the fight against ISIS.

The agreed upon de-confliction zone agreement remains in effect.

APPRÉCIATION DE SITUATION



En Syrie, après la prise de la ville de Tabqah et de son barrage, les forces démocratiques syriennes (FDS) mènent des opérations de sécurisation de la zone, afin de la nettoyer des nombreux pièges et engins explosifs improvisés (IED) laissés par Daech, alors que la population revient dans la ville. Plus près de Raqqah, les FDS ont poursuivi leur progression vers la ville en s’emparant de plusieurs positions défensives occupées par Daech.

En Irak, Daech poursuit ses actions de diversion et de harcèlement dans le pays. Celles-ci continuent de se concentrer contre les forces irakiennes dans l’Anbar.

Dans la région de Mossoul, l’offensive des Forces de sécurité irakiennes (FSI) a été marquée par des gains territoriaux quotidiens. Au nord, la 9e division poursuit son avancée le long du Tigre. Les autres unités resserrent l’étau autour de la médina en continuant d’avancer depuis l’ouest. Les trois quarts de la ville sont désormais libérés, mais la progression des FSI est freinée par un réseau d’habitations toujours plus dense à mesure qu’elles se rapprochent de la Médina où Daech est toujours solidement retranché.

ACTIVITÉS DE LA FORCE CHAMMAL

Appui feu – TF Wagram

La Task Force (TF) Wagram appuie désormais la 15e division irakienne, qui a repris en charge la sécurisation du secteur de Badush à la suite de la 9e division, profondément engagée dans les zones urbaines de Mossoul.

Elle a réalisé 80 missions de tir en appui des unités irakiennes, essentiellement d’éclairement pour contrer ou interdire les actions de harcèlement et d’infiltration de Daech.

Appui aérien au Levant

Cette semaine, les aéronefs de l’opération Chammal ont réalisé 38 sorties aériennes dont 30 de reconnaissance armée ou d’appui au sol (CAS), 2 de ravitaillement, et 6 de recueil de renseignements.

8 frappes ont été réalisées par les avions français en Irak et en Syrie. Elles ont toutes été conduites en appui des opérations au sol, principalement à Mossoul, mais également près de Tabqah et Palmyre en Syrie.

*Near Raqqah, 11 strikes [1 British?] engaged eight ISIS tactical units; destroyed five fighting positions, three mortar systems, three vehicles, two ISIS fuel trucks, and an ISIS headquarters; and damaged an ISIS supply route.

In Iraq, Coalition military forces conducted 10 strikes consisting of 69 engagements against ISIS targets.

On 17 May, Australian F/A-18 Hornets supported Iraqi forces during operations in Mosul. The Australian aircraft struck several Daesh fighting positions, ground lines of communication and a Daesh heavy weapons site with precision guided munitions over several hours of support.

Wednesday 17 May – Typhoons attacked terrorist mortar teams in Syria, whilst Tornados destroyed a tank in north-west Iraq and a Daesh position in Mosul…Two Typhoons assisted the Syrian Democratic Forces on Wednesday 17 May. Their first attack was on a mortar which a coalition surveillance aircraft had spotted north-west of Raqqa. Having eliminated that threat, the Typhoons then headed to the east of the country, where they bombed two buildings near Al Ulwah which were being used by another Daesh mortar team and their spotters. A Tornado flight meanwhile patrolled over Mosul, where they used a Brimstone missile to strike a terrorist position. Another Tornado flight later struck a Daesh tank loaded on the back of a heavy transport vehicle in north west Iraq, hitting it with a Brimstone.
