Reports that from 21 to 23 May 2016, Mirage 2000D have repeatedly hit Daesh, day and night. A dozen targets have been destroyed by two planned strikes and ground support missions conducted during the weekend. May 21, 2016, a patrol of two Mirage 2000D conducted a planned strike (Air Prohibition) about thirty kilometers south of Sinjar in northern Iraq. An armored vehicle manufacturing site loaded with explosives was destroyed (vehicle-borne improvised explosive device). During the same day, the air support mission (CAS – Close Air Support) have succeeded in the Mosul region of northern Iraq, but also of Fallujah in Anbar Valley. All day, the Mirage 2000D took turns in the Iraqi skies, ready to strike in favor of friendly troops who request it. Aircraft of Chammal operation thus struck four times on the enemy lines, destroying fighting positions, heavy weapons and vehicles of the terrorist organization. Finally, on the night of May 22 to 23, 2016, four Mirage 2000D equipped with SCALP missiles (long-range cruise autonomous system) hit and destroyed a weapons production site and explosive in the Fallujah area. The planned mission was conducted jointly with four other units of the international coalition (IRO).

Thursday 19 May – Tornados and Typhoons conducted attacks on multiple Daesh targets in northern Iraq, including a tunnel, ammunition stockpiles and rocket launchers…Royal Air Force Tornado GR4s and Typhoon FGR4s have continued to fly armed reconnaissance, strike and close air support missions over Syria and Iraq, destroying two Daesh headquarters in Syria and assisting the Iraqi ground forces as they commence operations to liberate Fallujah.

Tornados from RAF Akrotiri patrolled the Mosul area on Thursday 19 May. North of the city, they used a Paveway IV guided bomb to destroy a tunnel in which a group of Daesh extremists were based, then moved to the east of Mosul where 15 rocket launchers had been stored by the terrorists. Three Paveway IVs were used against ammunition stockpiles, before three Brimstone missiles were used to destroy the rocket launchers. The small warhead and high precision of the Brimstones avoided any structural damage being caused to the surrounding buildings.

Typhoons were also active over northern Iraq that day, operating north of Tall Afar where they employed a pair of Paveways to demolish a large weapons store, then two more Paveways against two other Daesh-held buildings.

IRAK / SYRIE : CHAMMAL
