Airwars assessment

Two civilians were killed as al Shifonya, eastern Ghouta, Damascus, was struck by explosive barrels and missiles, local media reported – though it was unclear who was to blame.

As the shelling of eastern Ghouta continued on its seventh day, Shifonya was again struck on February 24th, which according to HalabTodayTV and Step News Agency resulted in two civilian fatalities.

Though the streets were left in complete rubble, there are, as of now, no known reports of how many were left wounded.

Sources reported about both the launch of aerial missiles carrying phosphorus and explosive barrels.

Omar Madanieh, among others, tweeted that the town was struck by “Russian raids with phosphorus”, while others, such as HalabTodayTV, reported that it were explosive barrels, launched from helicopters, that had killed the two civilians.

Finally, reports were not clear in terms of culpability, as blame was appointed to either Russia, or to both Russian and Syrian regime forces.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Airwars assessment

One civilian was killed and others were left injured, local media reported following aerial shelling of Zamalaka, eastern Ghouta, Damascus, carried out by either Russia, the Syrian regime, or both.

al-Jazeera’s correspondent in eastern Ghouta reported how “raids of the regime and Russia targeted residential buildings with internationally banned cluster bombs, explosive barrels and napalm bombs in Zamaleka”.  Other reports merely mentioned that warplanes had struck the town.

According to Step News Agency and Smart News Agency, one civilian was killed by the shelling and “others” were left wounded.

Smart News Agency reported that the warplanes were “likely to be Russian”. However, the incident remains contested as others, such as al-Jazeera, pointed to shared culpability between the two belligerents.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Civilians were possibly killed and wounded as al-Marj, Damascus, was subject to aerial shelling, as reported by local media, who blamed both Syrian and/or Russian forces.

While several sources reported that al-Marj had been struck by air raids, no sources reported the scope of the civilian harm the strikes inflicted.

Only Step News Agency al-Jazeera, indicated that the strikes had caused civilian harm, as they in their general reporting from eastern Ghouta reported that the shelling “resulted in the deaths and injuries amid continued heavy shelling and flying of warplanes in the airspace” – including the shelling of al-Marj. However, no exact figures from al-Marj were provided.

Finally, sources were not clear in terms of culpability, as blame was appointed to either the Syrian regime, Russia, or both across the reports

Airwars assessment

One named civilian man was killed along with “tens” of wounded, local media reported as Hamouriya, like the rest of eastern Ghouta, continued to be under aerial shelling, carried out by Russian and/or the Syrian regime.

Besides from airstrikes, Baladi News reported the launch of explosive barrels, and al-Jazeera, citing local sources, reported how “the regime (Assad, ed.) bombed the towns of Hamouriya and Arbeen with internationally banned cluster bombs”.

Meanwhile, Sky News quoted the civil defense who said that missiles loaded with the internationally-banned Napalm also were used in Hamouriya.

One civilian fatality was reported by several sources. For example, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that “Russian warplanes carried out two raids targeting areas in Hamouriyah city, which resulted in the death of one person”, while adding that “tens of others” were left wounded.

The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SN4HR) identified the victim by name and informed that he was an ambulance drive  from al Abbada town in eastern Ghouta.

While few pointed either exclusive Russian or Assad culpability, the majority of reports, including LCCSY and SN4HR, identified both Russian and Syrian regime forces as responsible for the strikes.

The local time of the incident is unknown.
