Airwars assessment

On the afternoon of May 16th 2012 in Jabal (Mount) Yasuf in the Abyan province, Yemen, 16 militants, allegedly members of Al Qaeda, were killed and between five and 14 others were injured in two airstrikes allegedly orchestrated by the Yemeni air force and carried out by Yemeni fighter jets with possible assistance from the US Navy.

Nashwan News referenced an official military source in the Yemeni Ministry of Defense confirming strikes in the Abyan governorate. Fox News also referenced officials confirming the occurrence of Yemeni airstrikes in the Abyan province, which hit a farm in Moudia 40 kilometers east of the town of Lawder, killing 16 alleged militants including top local commander Samir al-Fathani. Samir al-Fathani’s brother Abdul Munim al Fathani was involved in the bombing of the USS Cole reported AP. He was killed in a drone strike in January 2012 (USYEM046-B).

The same source confirmed US assistance in coordinating airstrikes and assaults in the area according to local officials, but there is no confirmation of their involvement in these specific strikes. However, witnesses told AFP that the US Navy was also involved in the attacks although the naval bombardment was not confirmed by official sources.

A local military official told Xinhua news that fighter jets belonging to the Yemeni air forces hit two Al Qaeda squads, killing 16 alleged militants and injuring five. The official also said “[t]he Al Qaeda militants were attacked while they were gathering for lunch in a mountainous area, Hidaan, east of Lauder town.”

Multiple local and Western sources, local residents and local officials have confirmed the location of the strikes in Abyan province and the killing of 16 alleged militants as a result of those strikes. A spokesperson from the Popular Resistance Committees, a local militia, also confirmed the killing of 16 alleged militants in Abyan Province and the wounding of 14. It is alleged that between 5-14 belligerents were wounded by the strikes, with the majority of sources, such as AFP citing the number injured as 14.

The attack came amid a concerted offensive by the Yemeni armed forces in Abyan province. As many as 20,000 soldiers were reportedly involved in the push, with assistance from US special forces.

The incident occured in the afternoon.

Airwars assessment

An alleged US or Yemeni airstrike, naval bombardment, or drone strike killed 10 militants in an Al Qaeda hideout 70 kilometers away from Zinjibar in Shaqra, a southern town in the province of Abyan. There are currently no reports of civilian harm.

The Associated Press reported Yemeni warplanes bombed an Al Qaeda hideout 70km from Zinjibar, killing at least 10 militants, and that this is one of multiple strikes that occurred on the same day, allegedly killing a total of 16 militants stated in this incident and USYEM080-B. The Defense Ministry corroborated this total death toll on their website 26Sep.net. AFP reports that two of the alleged militants killed were from Saudi Arabia and one was Egyptian.

Due to the telephone lines being cut, AFP could not verify the death toll.

American drones have been involved in the campaign against Al Qaeda making it unclear whether the strike was carried out by Yemen or the US. Agence France-Press noted that the strikes against militants were undertaken with “U.S. logistical support”. Aden al-Ghad reported that US drones and missiles were launched in the area of Abyan from warships against prominent Al Qaeda leaders, specifying that a “one of the rockets landed at a checkpoint of the armed groups located at the top of Jabal Al-Arqoub, but there was no information about casualties”, although it is unclear if that references any of the incidents Airwars tracked on this day. It is therefore unclear whether the attack was an airstrike, naval bombardment or a drone strike.

A militant leader named al-Muhajir was named as one of the militants killed later on but it is unclear whether he perished in this incident or in USYEM080-B.

The incident occured in the afternoon.

Airwars assessment

Between 16 and 24 militants were killed in a series of alleged US or Yemeni airstrikes on Al Kawd village in the governorate of Abyan on April 8th, 2012, according to local sources. There were no reports of harm to civilians.

According to a tweet from @hbashrbash, 24 Al Qaeda militants were killed in naval missile strikes on the outskirts of Zinjibar. However, it seems likely that this total is combining the 16 militants killed in Al Kawd village and the eight militants killed in a vehicle in southern Yemen (USYEM057-B).

The Yemen Defence Ministry released a statement that “about 16 suspected Al Qaida militants were killed in the al-Kawd area near Zinjibar, the capital of Abyan province.” However, Xinhua referred to the airstrikes as Yemeni-US joint air raids.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Airwars assessment

According to local Yemen officials, three areas in Zinjibar were struck by alleged US drone strikes or Yemeni military strikes, killing 29 to 30 Al Qaeda fighters and wounding dozens others on March 22, 2012.

The website Arab Monitor stated that “dozens” were wounded in the attacks, which targeted alleged Al Qaeda bases. No other sources specified how many militants were wounded in the strikes. Witnesses also said that a “warplane also fired a missile at three vehicles of the Al Qaeda group in downtown Zinjibar carrying foreign fighters”.

Associated Press reported that 29 militants had been killed in a “rocket and artillery barrage, spread out over a 24-hour period” which ended on the night of Thursday March 22nd.

Naval vessels also allegedly took part in the extended bombardment, which some sources claimed were the work of the US Navy. The Pentagon later said that: “No American warships from the service’s Fifth Fleet or elsewhere in the region were involved in those operations.”

Akhbarelyoum reported that Yemeni military officials said that the strikes were carried out by the Yemeni Navy from boats in the Arabian Sea, and killed 29 Al Qaeda militants.

Xinhua reported that the strike was carried out by a U.S. drone, and killed “at least 30 fighters.” The source reported that the strike hit “two positions in Zinjibar city” as well as three vehicles in downtown Zinjibar. The source reported that the strike followed the suspected Al Qaeda killing of a Yemeni military officer.

Arab Monitor reported that US drones carried out the strike, and killed at least 30 people. This source also reported that both static positions and vehicles were struck. The vehicles were reported to be driving through the city centre. The source also stated that the strikes followed a killing of a “senior Yemeni Intelligence officer” the day before by armed fighters.

@Albaidanews tweeted that Ansar al-Sharia, the group that includes Al Qaeda’s arm in Yemen, denied that any fighters were killed in the strike.

While Arab Monitor reported that the strikes were carried out by US drones, Akhbarelyoum identified the Yemeni Navy as being responsible for the bombardment. The Associated Press put the death toll at 29 Al Qaeda fighters, while Xinhua reported 30 fighters killed. No source reported any civilian harm.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Airwars assessment

One civilian was reported injured and eight militants were killed in alleged Yemeni or US airstrikes carried out on the city of Jaar on March 18th 2012, in the governorate of Abyan. According to an Associated Press (AP) report published in the Washington Times, the civilian was injured when a post office being used as a temporary hospital was hit during the airstrikes.

The airstrikes on Jaar were part of a series of other missile strikes carried out against Al Qaeda positions throughout the province of Abyan including strikes on Zinjibar, the capital city of the governorate.

One witness told Xinhua that several residential buildings were damaged in the airstrikes, including four houses in the centre of Jaar which were “demolished”. However, Al Arabiya reported that while civilians in the city of Jaar were forced to flee their homes, “there were no immediate reports of people killed.”

Whilst the airstrikes were initially reported as having been conducted by Yemeni aircraft, an investigation by the Bureau of Investigative Journalism has cast doubt on this fact. The investigation found that the Yemeni Air Force (YAF) was decrepit and inadequate and “had not been functioning in ages” mainly due to endemic corruption, according to a Yemeni analyst. Additionally, at least one source, including a tweet from @sowtalthowra, referred to the strikes as coming from the sea, and we know there was reportedly at least one US warship in the region at the time.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Airwars assessment

Alleged Yemeni or US strikes on Al Qaeda positions in north-eastern Zinjibar, Abyan province, allegedly killed 14 to 18 belligerents and injured dozens of others on 18 March 2012, sources said. There are currently no reports of civilian harm, though one source, Xinhua, stated that an anonymous Yemen official stated that “it was not clear whether there were any civilian casualties.” Additionally, an unnamed witness told Xinhua that the shelling demolished more than four houses in the center of Jaar city, forcing many people to flee their homes.

According to Dawn News, a local official reported that “many bases of Al Qaeda were destroyed,” and 16 jihadists were killed while Xinhua provided a higher casualty toll, stating that “at least 18 terrorists” were killed and dozens were injured, without specifying exactly how many were injured.

Reiterating this news, the Yemen Times also reported that heavy shelling had targeted fields and badly damaged crops: “We are not sure whether Yemeni aircraft or US unmanned drones are responsible for the airstrikes,” one farmer told the Yemen Times.

Reuters called the strike a “naval bombardment”, and the Long War Journal surmised that “If missiles were indeed fired from the sea (and we have no confirmation of this, only the word of an anonymous Yemeni official), then they were most likely fired by US Navy warships. The Yemeni Navy does not possess the capacity to conduct such strikes; its missile boats and corvettes fire only anti-ship missiles.”

Xinhua reported a local Yemen official as confirming it was a joint US Naval – Yemen Air Force offensive, but placed the naval bombardment at nearby Jaar.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Airwars assessment

Up to five people, allegedly members of Al Qaeda, were killed in an alleged US drone strike or naval shelling on an extremist site in Bagdar neighborhood in the city of Zinjibar, the capital of Abyan province in southern Yemen on the evening of December 22nd, 2011 according to local sources and news outlets.

One of the casualties, Abdulrahman al Wuhayshi, was reportedly a relative of Nasser al Wuhayshi, a Yemeni who lead AQAP and was once Osama bin Laden’s personal aide in Afghanistan according to the sources. Local journalist Mohamad gad (@mohamadgad0) and other sources such as USA Today claimed that Abdulrahman was Nasser’s brother, however others such as Reuters reported that a security source said he was related to Nasser but “not a brother or a member of Nasser al-Wuhayshi’s immediate family circle”. According to the Long War Journal, the role of Abdulrahman in AQAP is unknown, and his death has not been confirmed by AQAP. Reuters also mentioned that “there was no word of any death of a leading militant on Islamist websites where al Qaeda often announces such news”.

Regarding the type of the attack, Almasdar online, Adengad and other local sources reported that five members of Al Qaeda organization were killed in a US naval shelling on a site near the city of Zinjibar. Whereas, other sources including Reuters and National Yemen who were reporting the death of Abdulrahman claimed that he was killed by a US drone strike. On the other hand, USA today said that according to AP “Yemeni security and military officials say a brother of Yemen’s Al Qaeda leader was among five people killed in the latest of a series of battles raging for days in the south of the country”.

The incident occured in the evening.

Airwars assessment

On March the 5th 2011, Gaddafi forces launched an air and naval bombardment on the city of Zawiya, resulting in the death and the injury of civilians. The rebels fought back and killed some Gaddafi soldiers and also African mercenaries.

According to Sayed Tawfik, Facebook post, said that “there was an air and sea bombardment in Libya on civilian targets in the city of Zawia and eyewitnesses from the field confirmed the destruction of tanks and that mercenaries soldiers were killed on this incident.”

@alalikhalid reported that “thirty people were killed, most of them civilians, in the fight in the Libyan city of Zawiya.”

According to Aljazeera, “a spokesman for the rebels in the city of Zawiya said that the Gaddafi Brigades launched a new attack and cordoned off the city from all sides, cut off phone calls, and violently bombed it from land and air for the second day in a row.

Journalist Ali Al-Mazdawi told Al-Jazeera that the outcome of the battles in Al-Zawiyah was 16 martyrs and 30 wounded.

CMS Aawsat reported that in the city of Zawya, “witnesses said the sound of artillery shelling and military helicopters shook the city, in an attempt by the forces of Gaddafi led by his son Khamis to control the city. The sources said all services were cut off from the city, the most important of which are medical services, water, electricity and telephones. The indiscriminate bombing left dozens of dead and wounded, causing unprecedented damage to the city’s history. The sources said leaders of the rebels «February 17» that there are bodies in the streets can not be reached, and that there are dozens of wounded who are killed by the forces of Gaddafi.”

Many buildings were set on fire in several buildings, including government buildings and a mosque. According to an eyewitness as a doctor at the medical centre “The Qaddafi forces attacked the medical centre, seized ambulances and killed three wounded people in the operating room.”

It was also added in CMS Aawsat that “the rebels killed about 37 Gaddafi soldiers, 13 African mercenaries.”
