Airwars assessment

On July 5th, 2011, at least 11 were killed and 57 were wounded in bombings on Misurata by Gaddafi forces. It was unclear how many were Libyan rebel forces and how many were civilians, and no detailed information were provided on the casualties.

BBC wrote that “Libyan opposition sources said that at least 11 people were killed and 57 wounded Tuesday in the bombing of the Gaddafi Brigades on the city of Misrata in western Libya.”

Multiple sources reported the bombings, while @AJABreaking reported “at least 5 rebels were killed in the Qadhafi Brigades’ bombings.”

Airwars assessment

On June 29th, 2011, rockets on Misurata from Gaddafi forces killed one thirteen year old and injured six others. The shelling was primarily aimed at the Doufan neighborhood. The deceased thirteen year old was identified as Moftah Muhammad Jalwal, while three out of the six injured were identified, but their ages were not provided.

Multiple sources confirmed the shelling, as well as civilian casualties. A video from Al Smood Libya showed an interview following the shelling, and showed several images reported to have been a result of the bombings.

A Facebook post by Farag Akwadir stated “The brigades were concentrated in the Dofan area south of Misrata. The shelling and bombardment were directed at civilian neigborhoods and distroyed several homes and other civilian properties.”

Missiles from Gaddafi forces allegedly struck Misrata in Zawiyat Al-Mahjoub and near the coastal road at 10 in the evening and killed one young man named Muhammad Al-Kabayli and injured two others. According to a Facebook post by Free Misrata 4 ever, Muhammad died because there was a shortage of medical supplies due to a bombing of Ghiran earlier.

The areas struck by the rockets were residential areas. A video posted by Free Misrata on Youtube showed the physical damage caused by the airstrike, including a crater in the ground and cement and metal debris. A video posted by Al Somood showed damage to the roofs and walls of residential buildings.

The incident occured at 22:00:00 local time.

Up to four civilians were reported killed by Gaddafi regime forces artillery shelling on Misurata.

Al Jazeera reported: “On the Misurata front, Reuters reported that three people were killed and 12 wounded in an artillery bombardment by Gaddafi forces on the Dafiniyah area.

More rockets fell on Wednesday in a suburb close to the port, and residents said no one was hurt, while a Reuters reporter said many dead sheep were lying in a field after the attack.”

February 17 Revolution of the Liberals of Libya said: “One of the city’s northeastern neighborhoods was shelled by long-range missiles by Gaddafi’s criminal battalions. About three rockets landed in one of the neighborhoods, causing material damage and wounding four civilians. The shelling killed about 35 sheep.”

Aisha Mansurey and Libya Alahrar TV said no human casualties occurred but the latter tweeted that six sheep were killed.

A child was allegedly killed and his mother severely injured by Gaddafi forces artillery shelling on the Roiussat area of Misurata.

Al Somood reported: “The missile that fell yesterday evening in the Roiussat area was at the house of the Abu Shaiba family. A child was killed and his mother was seriously injured and she is now in the intensive care room.”

Libya Alahrar TV and @RanimMoh wrote he was 16 years old, Al Zawiya said 14.

Al Aan said the father was also injured.

On June 17th 2011, pro-Gaddafi forces shelled the city of Misurata, killing ten including eight named victims and wounding 40, according to Reuters. The status of some of those harmed was unclear.

The news agency said: “In Misurata, opposition spokesman Ahmed Hassan said 10 civilians were killed and 40 others wounded when pro-Gaddafi forces bombed the city. The news could not be verified immediately.”

Libya Al Salam wrote: “Halima Dabour, about 55 years old, was martyred in her house, specifically in the Habara area.”

Another Facebook post confirmed ten dead, although no other were able to confirm injuries. At least one civilian woman and two rebels men were among the dead, with the other seven having unclear status.
