Between six and eight civilians, including a woman and up to three children, were injured by alleged Syrian Democratic Forces shelling of the city of Azaz of January 20, 2023.

The @SyriaCivilDefe reported that six people, including a child and a woman, were injured by artillery shelling coming from areas controlled by the Syrian regime and the Syrian Democratic Forces. The @SyriaCivilDefe later revised their toll to eight people injured, including three children and a woman. @mzmgr941 tweeted the same total of eight civilians injured, including a woman and two children.

The Syrian Observatory of Human Rights stated that six people were injured and that they were members of the Civil Police, while other local sources also referred to “police officers” being injured. The Syrian Network for Human Rights specified that of the seven civilians injured, four were civilian police officers.

@Obaida161999 provided an image with the names of the civilians wounded: 1- Fouad Hamdi son of Mahmoud 54 years old, leg injuries; 2- Mahmoud Al Ojeli 20 years old, shoulder injuries; 3- Thuraya Haj Hasan 40 years old (woman), shoulder injuries; 4- Mohamad Ahmad Khalaf 17 years old, neck injuries;
5- Louai Mohamed Meryamin, 31 years old, back injuries; 6- Mohamed Nour Faysal Idress, 21 years old, back injuries.

@alkhabour21 tweeted that the shelling occurred in the vicinity of the National Hospital in Azaz, and @Razak0000 referred to the shelling as having occurred in residential neighborhoods. Baladi News correspondent in Aleppo countryside added that the shelling affected the “Tal Rifaat” area and the southern neighborhood of the city, partially destroying some properties.

According to @mzmgr941, the shelling occurred to “prevent the revolutionary popular demonstrations in the city”.

All of the sources that reported on the incident attributed the strikes to the SDF or areas controlled by the SDF and regime forces. @AlTareek22 stated that artillery and missile shells were launched against the city of Azaz.

TAMPA, Fla. – U.S. Central Command forces partnered with Syrian Democratic Forces to conduct a partnered helicopter assault in eastern Syria on Jan. 18 capturing an ISIS Syrian provincial media and security operative. The individual was involved in the planning and facilitation of ISIS operations in and outside of the region as well as global recruiting efforts.

Extensive planning went into this operation to ensure its successful execution. Initial assessments indicate no civilians were killed or injured.

“This operation reaffirms CENTCOM’s steadfast commitment to the region and the enduring defeat of ISIS,” said Col. Joe Buccino, CENTCOM spokesperson. “The capture of this ISIS operative will disrupt the terrorist organization’s ability to further plot and carry out global attacks threatening U.S. citizens, our partners and innocent civilians.

“ISIS continues to represent a threat to the U.S. and partners in the region. CENTCOM maintains a sufficient and sustainable presence in the region and will continue to counter threats against regional security.”

Shaam News reported that a woman was killed by a sniper affiliated with the Syrian Democratic Forces in the village of Hazwan. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights stated that the woman was on her way from the village of Hazwan to the village of Abla.

@Sharqya_reporte provided the name of the victim:  Mrs. “Zahra Ali Al-Waheed”. The Syrian Network for Human Rights added that the woman was born in 1987 and that she was killed in her home village.

Baladi News reported that the incident occurred in the evening. All sources attributed the shooting to the Syrian Democratic Forces or areas controlled by them.

Nabd News reported that civilians, including children, were wounded when the SDF carried out shelling of civilian homes in the village of Hazwan. @Sharqya_reporte also referred to “several children” as being injured. None of the local sources provided an exact casualty count.

Euphrates Post was the only source that referred to “dead, including children” from the shelling.

All of the sources that reported on the incident attributed the injuries to the SDF. Sources including Euphrates Post reported that the SDF carried out heavy artillery while @Rian_almasri referenced “heavy machine guns” as being responsible for the casualties.

Two to three civilians were reportedly killed, and six to ten others were injured, two seriously, as a result of alleged PKK/YPG counterfire rocket artillery fire which hit Karkamış, Gaziantep, in Turkey on November 15th 2022.

@ConflictTR reported that the Minister of Interior for Turkey, Suleyman Soylu, said that one civilian that was killed was a teacher and another was a child. One of the injured was reported to have been a healthcare worker who was hit whilst attempting a rescue after the first rocket hit.

According to @AmRaadPSF, one of the seven rockets which fell on the village hit a primary school. The Daily Sabah reported that three schools were hit, alongside two houses and a truck.

The Daily Sabah also reported that the child who was killed was the nephew of Mahir Polat, deputy of the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP). Polat was reported to tweet, “Our nephew Hasan Karataş lost his life in the rocket attack organized by the treacherous terrorist organization in Gaziantep’s Karkamış district.”

The teacher who was killed was named Aysenur Alkan, and one of her loved ones tweeted, “I lost all hope that everything will be fine.” Her father also said, “I’ve been calling since nine in the morning but I can’t reach him. It was a daily commute. I don’t want to say anything. I’m burning inside…”  The child who was reported killed was identified as Hasan Karataş, aged five.

The attack was reported to have been a double-tap strike, as one of the wounded, health worker, Mehmet Goren, said that “there was a civilian under debris, we were helping them. At that moment another bomb came. With the quake, I found myself in the stairwell. Then I was brought to the hospital. I believe my leg is broken.”

Reported artillery shelling on the city of Azaz, in the countryside of Aleppo, Syria, on November 22nd 2022 resulted in between three and five civilians killed, according to @DeirEzzore.  The attack hit the market.  Five to eight civilians were reported wounded. Whilst most sources reported that this was an SDF strike, some sources mentioned that the shelling also came from areas controlled by the Syrian regime.

The dead were identified as from the city of Saraqib. According to @DeirEzzore they were: Ali Al Qabo, aged 17, Omar Musa al-Najjar,  aged 21, Ragheb Al-Khaled, and Shaaban Hilal or Shaaban bin Muhammad, aged 66.  The Syrian Civil Defense also reported that a young child was killed.  @Omar_Madaniah tweetd that the child was Saad al-Din Taftanazi.  He was also an internally displaced person from the city of Aleppo, who lived with his mother and brothers. A local source reported that “most of the time he slept in his workplace, looking for a livelihood for his family.”

Sources reported that Omar Musa Al-Najjar was an internally displaced person from Kafrouma, and his wedding was five or ten days previously.

@Qasemqt tweeted that “at the end of this street, there was a cafe showing the World Cup matches in the city of Azaz, many were watching, and many people were happening about what happened for a day and a moment. Every day turned into a bloody day for the entire city.”

Enab Baladi news correspondent in Azaz reported that the bombing hit a butchers shop in the marketplace. The news site also reported that a resident of the area, Nour Junaid, said that “the neighbourhood is a residential community that includes shops, and that there is no headquarters or military point in it.”

Airwars assessment

Two men were killed by a landmine allegedly placed by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the village of Al Alloush on November 15, 2022.

Shaam News reported that a landmine exploded in the village of Al Alloush as a civilian car was driving by, killing two civilians.

@manbij_today1 provided the names of the two civilians killed: Jamal Al-Attiyah from Aloush and a displaced person from Aleppo named Abu Ahmed. The Syrian Network for Human Rights added that Jamal was 37 years old while ASO Network News reported that Jamal was 28 years old and Ahmed was 24 years old.

ASO News Network identified the location as on an agricultural road and on the side of the road leading to Tishreen Dam.

According to Shaam News, the SDF was laying mines in the area near the frontlines with the Syrian regime to prevent smuggling. Multiple local sources including @sumudmedia1 attributed the landmine to the SDF.

The local time of the incident is unknown.
