Airwars assessment

Multiple local sources reported that a family of four brothers and their uncle, as well as a man with his son, and a woman, were killed in Rifae neighborhood after missiles and airstrikes hit the area. The raids took place in the street near the Mufti Mosque, in front of the medical clinic, and near Al Talib mosque.

The woman killed was “the wife of Brigadier Hilal Sabah Al-Fakhri” and the mother of both the lawyer Mohammed and Dr. Sabah. She reportedly died after raids hit their house.

MNN news and several other local media furthermore reported that Professor Ismail Hamo Abu Abdullah (pictured below) died after an airstrike hit his house in Rifae neighbourhood. Yaqein said that his only son was also killed in the bombing.

Sawlf Ateka reported five other victims:

“Yesterday, Wednesday, the missile shelling targeted the house of Hossam Ahmed Hassan al-Dulaimi near Al Talib mosque in Al-Rifa’i neighborhood. The shelling led to the martyrdom of his four sons and the martyrdom of his brother Waddah Ahmad Hassan al-Dulaimi.” MNN mentioned the same information.

A local residents’ Facebook page and local press reported that Abdel Fattah Jassim Al-Sharifi died after a ‘random’ bombing on Khazraj district in Old Mosul. Al-Sharifi used to be the owner of the library Bassam in Najafi Street.

According to local sources said that civilians were killed or injured in alleged Coalition and Iraqi force airstrikes on Tal Afar city, west of Mosul.

Tal Afar news agency reported that the aerial bombardment has continued in Tal Afar for the third day in a row. Civilians were confirmed dead, and the source said that Coalition aircraft bombed IS sites and the streets of the city intensively. Madar Al Arab reported that the commander of Nineveh operations confirmed the continued bombing of Tal Afar by the government and international Coalition aircraft.

Ali Alazawi added that the bombing led to the killing of the so-called training camp officials of IS.

The incident was first reported on August 1, 2017 at 12:13 am by وكالة انباء تلعفر Tal afar.

It was alleged by sources that the strikes killed a number of owners of car maintenance shops after they targeted the industrial district. The US-led Coalition was not blamed for the attack, however, nor were any other faction.

A girl was reported killed and a man injured when an airstrike was carried on a house in Al-Oudan district, north of Rutba, Anbar province, Iraq. The airstrikes were believed to be carried out by American forces.

The other members of the family were reportedly arrested but the reason remains unknown.

In July 2019 the Coalition announced that it had assessed this allegation of civilian harm to be non-credible. An internal CENTCOM report identified concerns of civilian fatalities raised by local Nineveh MP Abd al Rahman al-Luwayzi.

According to the MP, “Arab families, fleeing the area of Aski Musil were targeted by coalition aircraft, killing or wounding ‘scores of civilians.” The town is situated on the banks of the Tigris River to the north west of Mosul, and is easily identifiable on most maps.

Despite the report, CENTCOM determined that there was “insufficient information to determine time and location of the incident.” As a result the claims were deemed “Not credible. No further inquiry required.”

There was no attempt by the Coalition to contact Mr al-Luwayzi at the time, the MP later told Airwars.

An airstrike on the village of Fadiliya near Bashiqa, north of Mosul, killed between 5 and 11 civilians according to reports.

NINA, citing a peshmerga source, said that three Daesh militants and 11 non-combatants died in a coalition strike. In contrast Arb-q cited a security source as saying that an unidentified airstrike had killed “five members of one family: the father and mother, and three children.“

BasNews, making no mention of civilian casualties, said that a coalition strike had killed a local Islamic State commander known as Abu A’isha, a Syrian national, and three of his men.

A day later Islamic State reportedly destroyed six empty Christian homes in the town, in what may have been a retaliatory act.

A single source, NINA, reported that a Coalition strike on a house at Hamam al-Alil, near Mosul “led to the martyrdom of all the family that inhabited consisted of nine members, including three children and a woman.“

As NINA noted: “Local residents told the National Iraqi News Agency that the international coalition aircraft bombed a rocket on a house in Hamam al-Alil, which led to the martyrdom of all the family that inhabited consisted of nine members, including three children and a woman. They added that the bodies were handed over to the forensic medicine department in Mosul.”

In its monthly civilian casualty assessment for October 2019 – published on December 5th of that year – the US-led Coalition assessed this event to be ‘non credible’, noting: “August 21, 2015, in Mosul, Iraq, via Airwars report. The allegation provided insufficient detail to identify a specific date, time, or location to search for corroborating Coalition action. 2812/CI094 38SLF294240”.

The Coalition also provided coordinates showing the area it had assessed, accurate to within 100 metres.

In the first of their March 2020 civilian casualty reports, the US-led Coalition again assessed reports that they were responsible for civilian harm in this strike as “non-credible”, stating that no Coalition actions were conducted in the geographical area at that time.
