Airwars assessment

One man was killed in an attack by an alleged Russian warplane in al Sukkari on July 10th 2016.

All sources reported that the attack was carried out by Russian; there was no mention of the Syrian regime.

“Others” were reported to have been wounded with no mention of numbers. Sinn News however published a photograph of a young injured girl who was caught in the attack.

Al Sukkari was not the only neighbourhood in Aleppo to be attacked on July 10th, according to several local and other sources. Syrian PC reported Russian raids to have been carried out in “Al Sukkari, Mash’had, Al-Sheikh Sa’eed and Ansari”.

The manager of Shahba Press Agency, Mamon Khateeb tweeted “Martyrs of Aleppo today: Ibyen 11, Kafr Hamra 2, Dahret Awad 1, Qaterji 1, Old Aleppo 2, Sukkari 1, Manbij 5.”

HalabNow, a pro-regime source, tweeted saying “Warplanes raids now in Sukkari, Ferdous and Marja target the armed rebels positions.”

Local media reported that four civilians died in an alleged Russian airstrike on Bashentra.

Burqa News reported “Russian warplanes carried out shelling with missiles and cluster bombs”.

Ara News placed the number of wounded at 10, whereas Step News said that as many as 50 were injured. It said that some of the injuries were serious and that some people “were sent to hospitals in Turkey.” Qasioun also reported that dozens of injured were sent to local hospitals and medical centres.

In what appears to be a separate incident from the two Manbij events for July 9th outlined above, up to five civilians reportedly died in a Coalition strike on Al Khafsa town.

As Syria News Desk noted, “A civilian source from inside Manbij told Syria news desk that 5 civilians were killed and 15 others injured, including some who are in a critical condition, following the targeting of coalition planes with more than 10 raids the garage of al Khafsa town and the area around the automatic bakery and al Sarab bridge west of Manbij which led to the destruction of the bridge and three entire residential buildings.”

The Syrian Observatory reported only one death, “of a child under the age of 18.”

In the second of their March 2020 civilian casualty reports, the US-led Coalition assessed reports that they were responsible for civilian harm in this strike as “non-credible”, stating that no Coalition actions were conducted in the geographical area at that time.

Heavy reported Coalition strikes on the al Hunaithal neighbourhood of western Manbij led to the additional deaths of five named civilians, according to reports. Al Hall described the location as al Rabita Street.

On March 10, 2022 in the CJTF-OIR Civilian Casualty Report, the Coalition reported this incident to be “non-credible”, stating that “After review of all available evidence it was determined that more likely than not civilian casualties did not occur as a result of a Coalition strike.”

In a separate incident, 17-year old Zaki al Mohammad died when the Aleppo Road [or Al Hajj Street] bridge was destroyed.

Lens Young Manbij also reported that “yesterday on Saturday one of the doctors at the general hospital in the city was killed when planes targeted the area around the hospital with two raids. We will give you his name as soon as we receive it.”

In the third of their September 2020 civilian casualty reports, the US-led Coalition assessed reports that they were responsible for civilian harm in this strike as “non-credible”, stating that no Coalition actions were conducted in the geographical area at that time.

Russian warplanes and Syrian Regime helicopters allegedly shelled a roundabout in Al Jandol killing three civilians, according to Halab News Network and Syrian Network for Human Rights.

Several local news sources including Step News, Halab Today and Sky News blamed Russian warplanes for the shelling. Additionally, local source syriapost1 reported the use of “phosphorous bombs”.

Four members of the Civil Defence Service were killed while traveling from Anadan to rescue civilians in Assiya, according to sources on the ground. The Step News Agency said that the Civil Defence team were specifically targeted with a missile.

Al Jazeera claimed that it was the Syrian regime who were shelling various areas of Aleppo on July 9th. LCCSY, however, reported that Russian warplanes had shelled the area. Syrian Network for Human Rights blamed both Russia and the Syrian regime for the “missiles fired on Assiya near Hraitan.”

Up to four civilians died and 10 more were wounded in an alleged airstrike on Al Shia’ar in Aleppo, according to local media – though sources were conflicted as to whether this was the work of Russia or the Syrian regime.

AMC reported that the Syrian regime killed four and wounded ten more. Other local news sources such as Aksalser News also blamed the regime for the raid.

The Syrian Network for Human Rights initially reported the attack to be Syrian regime, but in a later news brief it blamed Russia.

Some local news sources, including LCCSY, reported that Russian warplanes to blame for the airstrike.

Eldorar News reported that both “Russian and Syrian warplanes were shelling with missiles and bombs in various areas in Aleppo including Al Shia’ar which killed and wounded civilians.”

According to sources, there was shelling with the use of cluster bombs, explosive barrels and missiles.

Multiple sources including Syrian PC, put the death toll at four. However, Syrian Network for Human Rights and Orient News put the number of killed at two.

The number wounded was placed between five and ten with one child included.
