Airwars assessment

According to news reports and local sources, between three and seven militants were killed in a series of five alleged US drone strikes close to the village of Kharama, between the towns of Azzan and Huta in Shabwa province on the evening of the 16th of April, 2012. The strikes were conducted within the mountainous region of Salb Al-Ain against a number of different Al Qaeda positions.

Whilst the Yemen Defence Ministry initially claimed that the attacks were carried out by Yemeni warplanes, two security officials and another from the Yemen Defence Ministry later told CNN that the strikes were conducted by US drones. CNN reported that the five different strikes were made against “hideouts, checkpoints, training facilities, and weapons warehouses,” and Barakish specifically referred to an Al Qaeda point at the Azzan Al-Houta junction as being hit in the strikes..”

These facts were supported by other news outlets such as Mareb Press and Sana News. Xinhua and local sources additionally reported that a car carrying Al Qaeda militants was hit by missiles launched from a US drone as the car travelled from Kharama to the town of Azzan. Local sources told “Al-Masdar Online” that the strikes occured at an agricultural area located between the city of Azzan and Kour Ahl Hadaj called “Salb Al-Ain Farms” belonging to the Badian Al-Numan tribe.

Mareb Press and several local sources also stated that the militants killed were specifically members of the al-Qaeda linked ‘Ansar al-Sharia’ group. On the 17th of April, Xinhua reported a statement issued by an al-Qaeda spokesman who acknowledged that three of their fighters had been killed in a “US drone raid”. However, multiple sources, including @binlznmalawlaqy, put the death toll at seven militants killed.

Xinhua further stated that foreign militants were killed in the strikes, including one Syrian and an Algerian, according to a Yemeni intelligence officer. The fact that foreign fighters were killed in the attacks was also supported by several different local sources. The ‘Long War Journal’ similarly stated that the ‘Madad News Agency’, the propaganda arm of AQAP (Al Qaeda on the Arab Peninsula) announced on the 25th of April that an Egyptian jihadist known as Abu Musab al-Masri was killed “a week ago in an American bombing between the cities of Azzan and al-Hotah in Shabwa province”, an indication that al-Masri may have been killed in the drone strikes on the 16th of April.

No civilians were reported to have been killed or injured in the strikes.

Due to the nature of both CIA and US military involvement in Yemen, and the lack of official acknowledgement by the CIA for their involvement, Airwars grades this event as “declared” due to the comments made by US government sources to media, in lieu of public reporting on CIA actions.

The incident occured in the evening.

Airwars assessment

Between 27 and 40 militants were reported to have been killed and “dozens” others were injured in a series of alleged U.S. drone strikes or Yemeni airstrikes in and around the town of Azzan in Shabwa governorate on the morning of the 13th of June, 2012. However, a a spokesperson for Ansar al-Sharia alleged that no deaths or injuries resulted from the strikes.

The total number of militants reported killed in the alleged strikes varied across a number of different media sources and news outlets. Wefaq Press quoted “local sources in Shabwa governorate” who claimed that at least “forty Al Qaeda terrorists were killed and number of others injured in raids carried out by U.S.drones on al-Qaeda sites in the Azzan region”. Wefaq Press also referred to comments made on the strikes by General Dr. Ahmed Al-Maqdashi, Director of Security in Shabwa Governorate. According to Wefaq Press, General Al-Maqdashi stated that 30 militants had been killed in three separate strikes and elaborated that “the first airstrike targeted a building housing a large group of terrorists, the second targeted another group at a point in the Azzan-Al-Houta junction, and the third strike targeted the yard of a house where cars and equipment belonging to Al Qaeda were located.” A report by Agence France-Presse (AFP) quoted a “local official” who, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated that the first strike, carried out against a building in Azzan, had killed nine militants. This is a claim also made by a report on the strikes written by the Associated Press (AP), and is further corroborated by several local sources. The specific numbers of deaths resulting from the second and third strikes (conducted against the Azzan-Al-Houta Junction, and a yard of parked vehicles, respectively) remain unclear.

Reuters quoted a senior Yemeni official who claimed that just two airstrikes had been carried out, resulting in the deaths of “at least 27 militants.” Reuters also reported that a local resident in Azzan had observed that “at least one strike was carried out by a drone.” It should be noted however, that the Yemen Post reported the airstrikes as having been carried out by “government warplanes”, rather than by U.S. drones. The Yemeni news outlet Aden al-Ghad provided additional details on the first of the strikes, stating that eyewitnesses had claimed that the house which was destroyed was “believed to be a weapons store” belonging to militants.

Several other individual local sources acknowledged and reported the strikes: @m123_4u stated that there had been seven separate “U.S. airstrikes in Azzan, Mayfa’a district, Shabwa governorate, killing 33 al-Qaeda members”, @WADEE_SHAIBANI reported that “twenty missiles from unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) fell in the areas of Azzan, Kharma Junction and Khalaf.” Additionally, @Salmanahomidy reported only two airstrikes, but specifically stated that the attacks were conducted against members of the Al Qaeda affiliated group ‘Ansar al-Sharia’ within the Azzan district.

On the 14th of June, the newspaper Yafa’a reported a statement made by a spokesperson for Ansar al-Sharia who was reported to have said that “the bombing dropped ten missiles without any casualties or injuries, praise be to God,” and further stated that “at 6:45 a.m. U.S. drones began launching five raids on separate areas of Azzan, with a time difference of about ten minutes between each raid.” The spokesperson said that the first strike had hit an empty house close to Al-Razi Medical Clinic on the main road of Azzan, destroying the house and damaging a nearby mosque. Aljazeera also reported the statement issued by Ansar al-Sharia, adding that several local sources specifically said that “American drone aircraft” had carried out the attacks.

These alleged drone strikes occurred as Yemeni military forces were making a concerted effort to force Al Qaeda linked militants from the town of Azzan, one of their final strongholds following their recent expulsion from the key cities of Zinjibar and Ja’ar.

The incident occured in the morning.

Airwars assessment

Two local-language sources suggested that at least one US drone strike had taken place in Hadramout governorate on February 20th 2019. There were no known associated reports of civilian harm.

Security sources told Aden 24 that a US drone flew low over the “first military zone in Sayyoun Hadramout”, and attempted to target two “terrorist elements”, including a senior leader. According to these sources, anti-aircraft fire targeted the drone, which responded by firing a warning shot in the area. It was unclear whether the drone killed anybody in the strike, or if it succeeded in targeting the mentioned “terrorist elements”.

A second local-language Twitter source, @VsQnjYon47ZepdJ, suggested that three alleged AQAP militants were killed by a US drone strike in Wadi Hadramout, which also wounded nearby soldiers. Airwars has therefore assessed that three belligerents were reportedly killed, and at least two were reportedly injured.

It is possible that these sources describe discrete events.

In a later press release, US Central Command did not assert that any US military strikes had taken place in February 2019.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Airwars assessment

Three US drone strikes reportedly targeted a convoy of alleged AQAP militants travelling through Aqaba Al Qandha area of Shabwa governorate, on the morning of September 2nd 2019. No known sources gave information on casualties of the strikes, and there were no known associated reports of civilian harm.

“Private sources” told Shabwa Press that US drones had targeted the militants as they travelled to support pro-government military operations in Shabwa, destroying three cars. Shabwa Press noted that Aqaba al-Qandaa is a key route in the area, linking Beihan with Bayda governorate.

Three local language social media sources, including @alsalahi_fahad, later indicated that there were “charred bodies” in the cars. Identical phrasing in these sources, however, indicates that they reflected one original post. Given the report of multiple bodies, minimum reported deaths has been set at two.

On October 4th 2019, a US Central Command spokesperson told New America that no US military strikes had been conducted in Yemen since June 24th 2019. It is, however, possible that an undeclared strike was conducted by the CIA, or was part of a clandestine US military action.

The incident occured in the morning.

US Forces

On October 4, 2019, United States Central Command (CENTCOM) replied to an email inquiry from New America confirming that “the last strike conducted by CENTCOM in Yemen was 24 June.” Per that statement, there were no CENTCOM strikes in Yemen in September 2019.

The lack of strikes in September makes it more than three months since the last U.S. military counterterrorism strike in Yemen, according to New America’s research. However, it is possible that the United States has conducted covert non-military strikes, and in recent years there have been a small number of strikes attributed by media reports to the United States that CENTCOM has denied conducting

Airwars assessment

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a civilian was killed and others injured in alleged Israeli airstrikes on Saboura village in Hama countryside on June 24th, 2020 after midnight.

The Observatory said “A civilian was killed and three others were wounded, as a result of the Israeli bombing of the village of Saboura in the eastern Hama countryside on June 24th.”

Around the same time a reported weapons factory was also targeted at nearby Salamiya, although there were no reports of civilian harm: “The Syrian Observatory learned from reliable sources that Russian forces had informed the director of the onion plant near Salamieh for evacuation before the Israeli bombing. And Israeli air strikes destroyed two of the buildings that were weapons depots, while the third one, which is used to manufacture crisps, remained.”

Nziv.net also reported that after the attack, “the sounds of ambulances rushing to the attacked site were heard. Confirmed reports confirm that there were casualties at the sites attacked.” In this specific strike, the cultural center was the alleged location of the strikes.

@SanaAjel tweeted that “SANA – Military source: At 00:45 pm, the Israeli enemy carried out a new air aggression targeting several locations of ours in Salamiya and Saburah in the countryside of Hama.”

In a special interview with News 13, the commander of the Ramat David base, Colonel III, did not confirm the attack, but agreed to say that “the goal is to reduce the Iranian military presence in Syria and all its elements that threaten the State of Israel.” They added they seven people were killed but did not specify if they were civilians or militants. A tweet from @yonibmen specified that of the seven killed were “5 Iranians and 2 Syrians killed in an Israeli attack in Syria, targets were attacked in the Hamat, a-Sahna and Swida areas in the south”.
