Airwars assessment

On October 20th 2023, between 18 and 22 civilians – including women and children – all members of the ‘Abu Al-Naja’ family were killed, and between 79 and 114 others were injured after an alleged Israeli airstrike on their residential home in the Abu-Shahla neighbourhood in east Khan Yunis, Gaza. It has been reported that the house was subject to an airstrike whilst the residents were asleep.

@ShehabAgency reported that the Abu Al-Naja household was one of six residential homes struck by the Israeli military in the Khan Yunis Governorate. Ambulance and civil defence crews were on-site to take those killed and wounded to Nasser Medical Hospital. The grandparents of the family, Khaled Mahmoud Abu Al-Naja, and his wife Muzain Musa Abu Al-Naja were killed during the alleged strike, along with their five children: Hani Khaled Abu Al-Naja (son), Khalil Khaled Abu Al-Naja (son), Jana Khaled Abu Al-Naja (daughter), Nancy Khaled Abu Al-Naja (daughter) and Hanaa Khaled Abu Al-Naja (daughter). The alleged strike also killed the husband of Hanaa Abu Al-Naja, Suleiman Mahmoud Abu Rock, and the wife of Hani Abu Al-Naja, Israa Al-Muzain.

There were also nine grandchildren of Khaled Abu Al-Naja and Muzain Abu Al-Naja killed during the alleged strike. Six children of Hani Abu Al-Naja and Israa Al-Muzain were killed: Khaled (son), Ahmed (son), Muhannad (son), Rand (daughter) Rawand (daughter) and Raghad (daughter). Two children of Hanaa Abu Al-Naja and Suleiman Mahmoud Abu Rock were killed: Remas (daughter) and Mahmoud (son). The daughter of Nancy Khaled Abu Al-Naja, Toleen (daughter), was also killed during the alleged airstrike.

Since the incident, family members have posted tributes online. Marwa Mohammed Naja, the great niece of Muzain Musa Abu Al-Naja, commiserated the death of her great aunt, and Khaled Mahmoud Abu Al-Naja along with the other “22 people in the house”. These sentiments were echoed by Waam Younes Abu Al-Naja, the niece of Muzain Musa Abu Al-Naja, in a Facebook post that states that more than 20 members of the Abu Al-Naja family were killed during the alleged airstrike. However, the @AbuAl-NajaFamilyGatheringOfficial Facebook post states that 18 members of the family were killed during the alleged Israeli airstrike.

There has also been an outpouring of tributes via Facebook from the cousins of Suleiman Mahmoud Abu Rock, among whom include Ahmad Abu Rok, Ola N. Reck, Deya Abu Rouk and Raed Rouk, Zakrua Haesan Rok. The former neighbour of Suleiman Mahmoud Abu Rock, Wael Abdelaziz Alnaka, expressed his regret at the death of Suleiman and his wife Hanaa along with their two children.

@ShehabAgency initially reported that 34 injuries resulted from the recent attacks on Khan Yunis, then raised the number to 51, and ultimately reported the number of 79 injuries. However, it is unclear how many injuries occurred amongst this incident. @PalinfoAr put the number of injuries at 114, and images posted by @ShehabAgency show at least three children being treated for injuries in a medical facility.

At least 20 members of an “Al Naja” family were also reported killed in an incident three days prior, recorded in Airwars’ archive in ISPT0298.

Where sources identified the belligerent, all sources attributed the strikes to Israeli forces.

Where possible, Airwars has matched names with the Palestinian Ministry of Health list of nearly 7000 victims’ names and ID numbers released on October 26th.

Due to the scale and urgency of Airwars’ assessment process, all images have been automatically uploaded to each assessment with the graphic filter applied to protect users. We have also included all images identified from the sources, which may also include any imagery of combatants.

The incident occured during the night.

Airwars assessment

On Thursday October 5th 2023, artillery strikes allegedly perpetrated by the Syrian regime and/or Russian military on the city of Sarmin injured between 10 and 15 civilians, including 3 children and 2 women.

Most sources, including Syrian Civil Defence (SCD), reported that 10 civilians, including three children and two women, were injured and shared photos and videos of children receiving treatment within ambulances run by their teams. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported that 15 civilians were injured in this incident, which was a part of dozens of shelling, artillery and missile incidents across the Idlib countryside. None of the injured victims have currently been named.

SCD also shared that the artillery damaged Sarmin’s residential neighbourhood infrastructure and two schools, one which was named as Hussein al Hajj Abboud. Syria TV posted that the strikes had caused civilians to be displaced from Sarmin as a result of the continuous shelling.

SOHR, alongside numerous local news sources such as Idlib Media Center, attributed the attack to the Syrian regime. The Coordination of the Syrian Revolution also suspected the involvement of the Russian military, however there have been no official statements taking responsibility from either suspected belligerent.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Location

Shabeelow village, Mudug, eastern Somalia, Somalia

Airwars assessment

More than 30 Al-Shabaab militants were killed in an airstrike declared by Somali forces on Shabeelow village, located in the Mudug region of central eastern Somalia on the 23rd of September 2023, according to the Somali Ministry of Defense.

Whilst an exact number of casualties was not given, the Ministry of Defense statement reported that the attack had been carried out against “Khawarij centers, resulting in heavy losses for the Khawarij. Over 30 neutralized, including leaders and militiamen”. Khawarij is the preferred term currently used by the Somali government to refer to Al-Shabaab militants. The statement added that the operation had dismantled key “gathering points” used by the militant group.

Middle East Monitor News, on the 24th of September, reported on the attack, noting that “the airstrike came hours after a suicide truck car bomb in the central town of Beledwayne killed more than 18 people and wounded 40 others”.

On the 23rd of September, independent journalist Zakeriye Axmed commented on X/Twitter regarding the statement released by the Somali Ministry of Defense, acknowledging that, other than the statement itself, there was “no independent confirmation” of the attack.

While no sources directly implicated the US in the operation, the Somali government’s reference to airstrikes has in the past indicated US involvement.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Airwars assessment

French commandos failed to a rescue a French spy held hostage by al Shabaab since 2009. Paris claimed the militants executed the captured secret service agent, known by his alias Denis Allex, during an assault by 50 Special Forces troops. However al Shabaab’s media wing said the hostage survived.

Seventeen alleged militants were reportedly killed and eight civilians died, including a child and both his parents. Four civilians were killed when they were woken by helicopters landing. They were reportedly shot when they turned on flashlights. Survivors allegedly warned the militants of the advancing French force.

AFP gave the most detail regarding the civilian casualties: “‘Four civilians, including three from one family, are among the dead. They were all killed outside Bulomarer, where the French commandos landed before entering the city,’ resident Adan Derow said by telephone. The victims were a couple, their son and another man, other residents said. ‘We don’t know why those civilians were killed’ outside Bulomarer, where the raid took place, added another resident, Ali Moalim Hassan.

“‘Four other civilians were also caught in the crossfire and died in the town of Bulomarer” during a pitched battle between French commandos and Islamist fighters. The four included a woman, her child and a local market guard, according to residents.”

Al Shabaab claimed they had moved Allex to a new location before the attack although French and Somali government sources said he was killed by his captors during the attack. The militant commander Shiekh Ahmed was reportedly killed in the gunfight. One French commando was killed and another was wounded. The injured soldier was taken by al Shabaab who said he subsequently died of his wounds.

At least five helicopters ferried the commandos from the amphibious assault ship Mistral to Bulo Marer. The French force underestimated the resistance they would face, reported AFP. An anonymous Somali aid worker told the agency: “We were told there were about 40 of them against more than 100 heavily armed Shebab fighters. Their mission was impossible and not very professional.”

The US provided “limited technical support” to the French operation. US Air Force strike fighters entered Somali air space but did not fire their weapons. The operation was reportedly timed to coincide with a French air and ground offensive in Mali. Paris denied the two African operations were connected.

The local time of the incident is unknown.
