Airwars assessment

Alleged Russian or Syrian regime airstrikes targeted several areas in the village of Al Hawija, which is located on the Al Ghab plains in Hama province. An unknown number of civilians was reportedly injured.

Step News Agency reported that “several people were injured as a result of Russian raids targeting the village of Hawija west of Hama”. Other sources reported that there had been no casualties.

Twitter user @Abdalrhman_ma94 said there was a cemetery among the targeted areas.

Enab Baladi wrote that the Syrian regime with support of Russia was responsible for the airstrikes, while most sources pointed at Russia as the belligerent.

At least two civilians, including a woman, were injured in alleged Turkish shelling of al-Dardarah village on August 23, 2021.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, “a young man and a woman were injured due to Turkish bombardment on al-Dardarah village”.

Nabd News provided the names of the civilians injured: Amena Al Faris (21 years), and Khidr al-Fars (39 years)”.

In addition to the injuries, houses in the village sustained material damage.

Nabd News added that the two civilians were “lightly wounded” and that their health condition was stable following treatment and discharge from the hospital they were being treated at, the Martyr Legarin Hospital in the town of Tel Tamr.

All of the sources attributed the strikes to Turkey.

At least nine civilians, including two children, were killed in alleged Russian and/or Syrian regime air and artillery strikes on the city of Harasta on March 20th, 2018, according to local sources. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights suggested that the death toll could be as high as 20, including 16 children and four women. An unknown number of civilians was injured.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights initially reported the death of nine civilians, including two children, before noon on March 20th, adding that some injured civilians were in critical condition. Later, the SOHR monitored the deaths of 20 civilians, including 16 children and four women due to the result of Russian airstrikes.

Harasta city posted the names of eight killed victims, Harasta Jaree7a later added the name of another killed man to the list.

@HossamDamascene reported that “Russian aviation targeted residential neighbourhoods in Harasta city in Eastern Ghouta with four airstrikes loaded with internationally prohibited incendiary phosphorus missiles.” @N_workMediaHoms spoke of many injured civilians in more than 13 Russian air raids and dozens of artillery shells.

Whereas most sources blamed Russia for the incident, the Local Coordination Committees of Syria pointed at both Russia and the Syrian regime.

Two people were killed in alleged Israeli strikes on Al Ba’th city on June 24, 2017. Sources were conflicted as to whether the people killed were civilians or members of the Syrian army.

Khabar Agency reported that Israel struck Syrian army facilities after 10 shells were fired from the Syrian side of the border toward the Golan Heights. Khabar also wrote that the Israeli military said that they had struck a tank that was preparing to fire a shell. However, according to a Syrian army source, an Israeli missile fell on a residential building, resulting in a number of civilian deaths and damage to the building.

Syrian Arab News Agency, the Syrian regime controlled news agency, accused the Israelis of supporting al-Nusra with their strikes and of firing rockets at “the Governorate parking lot and a residential building, claiming a number of lives and causing material damage”.

RT News reported that “the Israeli army instructed farmers and civilians near the Quneitra border crossing into Syria to avoid open fields”, according to Jerusalem Post, and that the Israeli retaliatory strikes came less than an hour after the spillover fire from Syria.

France 24 quoted the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights as reporting that the Israeli raid resulted in the death of two Syrian soldiers. However, Haaretz News quoted the Al-Mayadeen Network as identifying at least two Syrian civilians as being killed in the attacks.

Financial Express described the fighting on the Syrian side of the border as being between rebel groups, including Islamist factions, and the Syrian regime, and the Israeli military referred to the shells the landed in Israel as “errant fire” that wasn’t intentionally launched at Israel.

The Israeli Defense Forces posted a statement on twitter that “in response to over 10 projectiles launched from Syria, IAF aircraft targeted origin of launches & 2 Syrian tanks”, acknowledging the strikes. They also published a video showing that they described as being “a site containing automatic weapons and two tanks being targeted and destroyed”.

Several civilians were reported injured and/or killed in alleged Russian forces or Syrian regime forces airstrikes on Hass in Idlib, Syria on March 27th, 2018 according to local sources. The sources reported that the area was targeted at least with two raids while others reported that four raids were launched.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said “raids targeting areas in the town of Hass, caused material damage with news about injuries due to the bombing.”

@omargen919 and @wateen_media mentioned that Hass hospital was put out of services after it was targeted with those raids.

Edlib Media Center, @HalabTodayTV, @omargen919, @wateen_media, @RFS_mediaoffice @GenevaUpdates, @mohanadalshekh ,and @blaas083 blamed Russia for the raids, while @IdlibPlus and @abo22yazed blamed the Syrian regime.

At least one civilian was injured in alleged Russian or regime shelling on Josef village on November 23, 2021.

According to the Syrian Network for Human Rights, a civilian was seriously injured and a house was damaged in an attack on Josef village. An Al-Jisr reporter stated that the civilian was seriously injured.

Syrian Civil Defense also identified one civilian as being injured, adding that the volunteers took the injured person to a hospital for treatment and put out a small fire that was caused by the shelling.

Sources were conflicted as to who was responsible for the strikes, with @IdlibPlus and Syrian Civil Defense attributing the “laser-guided artillery shells” to both the regime and Russian forces while Alaraby and Nedaa Post blamed only the regime.
