19 strikes were made by French aircraft in Iraq and Syria in the last week. Most of them were carried out in the battles of Mosul and Raqqah. These strikes were aimed at groups of Daech fighters. The other strikes were carried out in Syria and targeted regrouping and refueling areas used by jihadi fighters. Task Force Wagram carried out 16 artillery strikes in Mosul.

Location

Airwars assessment

On January 21st, 2024, US Africa Command (AFRICOM) conducted a drone strike against the Al-Shabaab militant group 35 kilometers northeast of the city of Kismayo in the Lower Juba region of Somalia, reportedly killing three militants. To date, there have been no reports of civilian casualties in connection to the strike.

Two days later, on the 23rd of January, AFRICOM released a statement on the strike: “at the request of the Federal Government of Somalia, U.S. Africa Command conducted a collective self-defense airstrike with two engagements against the Al-Shabaab terrorist group on Jan. 21”. The statement added that after an initial assessment, it was judged that “no civilians were injured or killed” by the airstrike and that three Al-Shabaab militants had been killed.

The Long War Journal published an online article, written by Bill Rodrigo and Caleb Weiss, dated January 23rd, which stated that the attack had specifically been a drone strike and observed that the attack was the first declared US drone strike in Somalia in 2024. The Long War Journal noted that “neither AFRICOM, the U.S. military command responsible for such strikes, nor Somalia itself have confirmed the exact coordinates” of the strike.

Additionally, a report from Associated Press (AP) written by Omar Faruk on January 23rd, reported that there had been “no immediate response” from Al-Shabaab concerning the strike. Furthermore, Garowe Online on January 24th, stated that the militants killed were “not notorious” but that the strike had been carried out “for defense purposes” in coordination with the Somali National Army (SNA).

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Federal Government of Somalia, AFRICOM target al Shabaab

At the request of the Federal Government of Somalia, U.S. Africa Command conducted a collective self-defense airstrike with two engagements against the al Shabaab terrorist group on Jan. 21.

At the request of the Federal Government of Somalia, U.S. Africa Command conducted a collective self-defense airstrike with two engagements against the al Shabaab terrorist group on Jan. 21.

The collective self-defense strike occurred in a remote area of Somalia, approximately 35 kilometers northeast of Kismayo.

The initial assessment is that the U.S. airstrike killed three al Shabaab terrorists and that no civilians were injured or killed.

U.S. Africa Command will continue to assess the results of this airstrike and will provide additional information as appropriate. Specific details about the units involved and assets used will not be released in order to ensure operational security.

Al Shabaab is the largest and most active al-Qaeda network in the world and has proved both its will and capability to attack U.S. forces and threaten U.S. security interests. U.S. Africa Command, alongside its partners, continues to take action to prevent this malicious terrorist group from planning and conducting attacks on civilians.

Somalia remains key to the security environment in East Africa. U.S. Africa Command's forces will continue training, advising, and equipping partner forces to give them the tools that they need to degrade al Shabaab.

U.S. Africa Command, headquartered in Stuttgart, Germany, with partners, counters malign actors and transnational threats, responds to crises, and strengthens security forces in order to advance U.S. national interests and promote regional security, stability and prosperity.

Up to four non-combatants, including two children, were killed and 10 injured in alleged Russian nighttime airstrikes on Benin.

The Syrian Network for Human Rights stated that phosphorous weapons may have been used in two strikes, which burned 500m of agricultural land. Additional strikes then targeted an olive pressing facility and a bakery in Bayneen. Nine civilian cars were also allegedly burnt out, and six others damaged.

One of the founders of the Human Rights Office for Violations Documentation in Idlib province, a lawyer was killed. Mr Abu Rawad’s son and one of his nephews also died, despite receiving treatment for their injuries at a field hospital.

Shaam News Network reported that Abu Rawwaddevoted all his time to collecting and documenting violations by the Assad regime and his security forces.”

An activist from Al Zawiya mountain added: “Abu Rawwad was a beacon of light who worked day and night documenting the regime’s violations and visiting with us on a daily basis in our office… He often couldn’t afford the fuel for his motorcycle and he had a poor family with several children… But this did not prevent him from  working even for one moment thanks to his morals and his love for the revolution and the revolutionaries.”

The Syrian Network said this was the first time it had documented the alleged use of phosphorous bombs by Russian forces. Upon analysing the remnants of shells, it believed white phosphorous was used. According to the Network, no non-combatants were reported injured due to the use of phosphorous bombs, but three were killed as a result of the subsequent shelling of the olive pressing facility and the bakery.

Khaled Nour, a local resident and eyewitnesses told SN4HR: “The warplanes launched two airstrikes on Bayneen town. The rocket exploded in the air and I saw a group of fireballs. When it reached the ground, it caused a great fire. Then the Russian warplanes conducted another airstrike on a nearby region with four vacuum rockets which destroyed the olive presser and the bakery. The shelling injured dozens of individuals. We did not hear the sound of the rocket that dropped the phosphorus bombs but we heard the sound of the warplane and we saw the fireballs and very thick white smoke.”

Moustafa Ghareeb, a local activist who examined the shelled region told SN4HR: “I went to the first location and saw remnants from phosphorous shelling spread over a wide area. Almost 500 meters of agricultural lands were burned as well. The bombs left remnants of molten iron which became watery fluid due to the heat as well as the black viscous substance that smelled like sewage water. The residents in the region told me that a rocket targeted the olive presser where 15 cars were present next to it; all of which belonged to civilians since we are harvesting olives these days.

Then the warplanes targeted the people who escaped the shelling on the olive presser and it shelled the square where the cars had been parked. A few minutes later, it targeted a bakery with three rockets. I saw great and massive destruction to the oil presser, the bakery and the flour storage house. In addition to the human casualties, the shelling damaged the olive crops which the residents rely on to earn a living. I believe that Russian reconnaissance planes monitored car movements to and from the olive presser which made it a target for the warplanes. Russian warplanes not only kill us, they destroy our crops and livelihoods.”

Mohamad Thakara, head of a local civil defence team which went to the shelling location, told the Network: “When we arrived there, the grove was burning and we put [the fire] down. We also collected bomb remnants… Later, Russian warplanes targeted the region with rockets thought to be vacuum rockets and targeted the olive presser, the nearby square and the bakery. We pulled out victims’ bodies from under the rubble and transported injured people. During that time we were shelled again and two members of our team were injured, and our ambulance was damaged. I took my teammates, the rest of the injured people and the victims to the hospital. The shelling caused great destruction to the agricultural lands and civilians’ cars. The Russian warplanes conducted more than 9 airstrikes on a purely civilian region. They did not only target civilians but civil defense members as well”

Smart News published a video showing the alleged bombing, which it claimed killed four civilians, and injured 10.

Airwars assessment

Local press and resident sources said that dozens to hundreds of civilians, including the bodies of ‘hundreds of children and women’, were under the rubble in various areas in Old Mosul. Heavy shelling and air strikes had allegedly hit their homes. Local media provided striking accounts of streets filled with dead bodies, and called for help to save the families under the rubble.

The Nineveh Media Center and mutliple other sources said that “hundreds of bodies of civilians [were] under the rubble in the areas of the Great Mosque and Sargkhana and Ras al-Kor and Bab Laksh and in the vicinity of Khalid Bin Al-Walid Street.” It said that most of these civilians died in air strikes.

Mosul Eye (local press) reported the same information on Facebook, launching the following appeal: “We urge the Coalition to immediately intervene in rescuing tens of families who are still under the rubble as the civil defence teams are not capable of rescuing them. There are tens of children and women who still alive under the rubble at those locations. Those areas are already liberated .. they must be rescued immediately now. All the area around this: 36.343166, 43.121770.”

Iraqyoon Agency also said that Iraqi civil defense teams were no longer able to do the rescue work, given the “magnitude of the disaster”.

In a striking account, Alaraby News said on Friday June 30th that: “In the streets, the bodies of civilians fill the sidewalks, and inside the destroyed houses there is evidence that dozens of bodies are beneath [the rubble], where smells are emitted and dogs are barking around, amid reports that hundreds of civilians have been hit by shelling in their homes during the past two days.”

A rescue worker had furthermore told Al Jazeera news that “the area around the [Grand Nuri] mosque has dozens of bodies that are still under the rubble and have not been removed for days.”

According to Al Jazeera, the Iraqi Observatory for Human Rights spoke with eyewitnesses who had managed to flee the Old city and said that heavy shelling killed dozens of civilians. The witnesses could not say what the exact source of the bombing was.

BBC Arabic published video material and interviews with eyewitnesses who were still trapped in Old Mosul. One woman in the reportage said that her son was killed by an air strike, and she only needs to bury his body.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Airwars assessment

A husband and wife were killed and four others injured after an alleged Israeli bombardment on Block 12 of the al-Bureij camp on October 22nd, 2023.

65-year old Arif Ahmed Al-Nabahin was killed with his wife, 59-year old Mona Abdel Rahman Al-Nabahin.

The strike was initially reported by Safa News at 10:36am, and has been described as both an aircraft bombing and an artillery strike. Other sources such as Al-Sharq News and Urgent Now corroborated the strike, reporting a “number of casualties and injuries.”  A Facebook post by Muhammad Jaber further alleged four people were injured; this has not been confirmed elsewhere. The same post also noted that it was difficult for ambulances to gain access to the site of the strike, and appears to have had to withdraw after thirty minutes of trying to reach the site.

Friends and relatives posted on social media to pay tribute to the victims. A post by Facebook user “Made in Gaza” remembered the couple, describing Mona as “virtuous” and asking for God to “have mercy on them.” A photo attached shows a smiling Arif.

A tribute by Arif’s childhood friend, Abu Basil Azara, included a photo of a young Arif standing with two friends.

Facebook user “Abu Ajwa’s assistant” wrote that the pain of such losses was a “sadness that does not stop.”

Where possible, names have been matched with the Palestinian Ministry of Health list of fatalities in Gaza released on October 26th, 2023.

Where sources identified a belligerent, all sources attributed the strike to the Israeli forces.

Due to the scale and urgency of Airwars’ assessment process, all images have been automatically uploaded to each assessment with the graphic filter applied to protect users. We have also included all images identified from the sources, which may also include any imagery of combatants.
