Airwars assessment

At least 15 civilians, including a pregnant woman and at least nine children, were reportedly killed and up to 40 others injured in an alleged Israeli airstrike which hit several homes on Abu Khater Street in the Tal al-Zaatar neighbourhood of the northern Gaza Strip on October 25th 2023.

Whilst the Jordanian news agency, Roya News, citing the Gaza Interior Ministry, announced that 11 had been killed in the strike, @abeer, writing on Twitter/X, placed the toll higher, reporting that “more than 20” were dead. Meanwhile, 15 individuals were named by family and friends to be among those killed. Therefore, in line with Airwars’ methodology, the minimum number of people killed has been recorded as 15.

Multiple sources concurred that many were injured in the strike, with Roya News placing the number of injuries at “dozens” whilst Shehab Agency reported that 40 injured people had arrived at the Indonesian Hospital and Awdeh TV placed the injury toll at 32. Among the injured who were transported to the hospital, @Walaasawalmeh claimed on Twitter/X that one group was composed entirely of children, along with images of at least six children receiving treatment. Palinfo reported in a post on Twitter/X that three children were injured in the incident.

According to Palinfo, the al-Zuhairi family home was destroyed in the strike whilst neighbouring houses, such as that of the Aziz family, were heavily damaged leaving many of the dead and injured buried beneath the rubble. @Bisan_Shafri added that the Salha and al-Sulay family homes were also hit in the strike and that rescue operations were carried out.

Of the 15 people identified by family and friends to have been killed in the strike, 12 came from three generations of the Salha family and three were members of the al-Zuhairi family. Grandmother Manal Salha was killed alongside her five daughters Maha Hussein Mohammed Salha, 21-year-old Shaima Hussein Mohammed Salha, who was nine months pregnant when the incident occured, 17-year-old Jannat Hussein Mohammed Salha, 13-year-old Shatha Hussein Mohammed Salha, and 10-year-old Maria Hussain Mohammed Salha as well as her son Muhammad Hussein Salha. Maha Hussein Salha’s 2-year-old daughter Hoda Ahmed Jamal Jarad and Shaima Hussein Salha’s 1-year-old daughter Rana Majd Ramzi al-Muqayed were also killed in the strike. Additionally, 24-year-old Israa Jamil Abu Dan, Manal Salha’s daughter-in-law, was killed alongside her 1-year-old son Moamen Essam Salha and her 2-year-old daughter Rehab Essam Salha.

From the al-Zuhairi family, grandfather Khaled al-Zuhairi was killed alongside his 2-year-old granddaughter Batoul al-Zuhairi and his 1-year-old grandson Moaz al-Zuhairi.

Furthermore, @feraasemad claimed that five had been killed in the Aziz family home.

TRTArabi posted a video on Twitter/X of a paramedic attempting to resuscitate a child who had reportedly been pulled from the rubble after the incident that took place in Tal al-Zaatar.

Numerous family members and friends mourned the loss of those killed on social media. Majd.almogayad [Majd Ramzi al-Muqayed] paid tribute to his wife Shaima Hussein Salha and young daughter Rana Majd Ramzi al-Muqayed on Facebook, announcing their death and writing “My wife, by beloved, the apple of my eye, who is in the ninth month of pregnancy, and my little daughter, Rana, my beloved, the light of my eyes, the queen of my heart, my soul, and my life […]”

Issam Hussein Salha, who lost his mother Manal Salha, his wife Israa Jamil Abu Dan, his two children Maomen Issam Salha and Rehab Essam Salha, and six siblings in the strike also mourned on Facebook. “I ask God Almighty that you attain the highest paradise”, he wrote.

Meanwhile, Mohammedd.shawari posted on Facebook that October 25th was “A date that I will never forget as long as I live.” He continued, “My grandchildren, Batoul and Moaz [al-Zuhairi] and their grandfather, the deceased friend. May God have mercy on you and give us patience in your separation.” A tweet from @AlAYASHxs included graphic images of both of the children deceased.

Aerial images posted by Roya News showed the scale of the destruction as two buildings appear totally destroyed, only pillars remaining, while the surrounding buildings also sustained substantial damage.

Images posted by Raya FM further show the scale of damage as an entire block has been flattened and Civil Defense workers can be seen searching under blocks of rubble. Other images of the scene, posted by Shehab Agency, show civilians and a digger clearing the rubble of the destroyed house, while household objects and clothes can be seen scattered across the area.

Upsetting images posted by multiple sources showed the family mourning the victims who had been killed, a number of bodies can be seen wrapped in white shrouds. An image posted on Twitter/X by Shehab Agency showed a man gently holding a child’s body, wrapped in a white shroud, close to him. Other images showed some of the child victims arriving at the Indonesian Hospital, severely harmed.

The Ministry of the Interior in Gaza reported that the incident took place without warning.

The names of all victims except for Maha Hussein Salha and Mohammed Hussein Salha have been reconciled to the Palestinian Ministry of Health list of fatalities published on October 26, 2023. Khaled al-Zuhairi and Manal Salha have been partially reconciled but full reconciliation is not possible without further evidence.

Where sources identified the belligerent, all sources attributed the strikes to Israeli forces.

Whilst the exact local time of the incident is unclear, reports first emerged in the late morning.

Due to the scale and urgency of Airwars’ assessment process, all images have been automatically uploaded to each assessment with the graphic filter applied to protect users. We have also included all images identified from the sources, which may also include any imagery of combatants.

The incident occured in the morning.

Airwars assessment

Between seven and 10 belligerents, specifically member of the Iranian forces and their loyal militias, were killed and others were wounded in alleged Israeli strikes on Al sheikh Najar and near Aleppo airport around midnight between March 27/28, 2019.

Euphrates Post reported “Israeli planes targeted midnight on Wednesday with violent raids in the vicinity of Aleppo International Airport. Local media sources said that huge explosions were heard in the vicinity of Aleppo International Airport and Sheikh Najjar area, in conjunction with the escalation of the flames.” They added that according to the forces loyal to the regime, “the Israeli aircraft targeted some sites in the industrial area in Sheikh Najjar northeast of Aleppo, and limited damage to materials only.”

A tweet from @BabakTaghvaee identified the facilities struck as “a rocket manufacturing workshop at Sheikh Najar industrial zone, near the #Aleppo International Airport. It is reported that #IRGC was producing Fajr-5C precision guided rockets for #Syria Arab Army there. #Israel Air Force’s F-16D/Is & F-15Is dropped their SDBs on the #IRGC targets near #Aleppo from 45,000 to 51,000ft altitude.”

Syrian Arab News Agency also reported that “a number of industrial sites in Sheikh Najar industrial region” were hit with strikes and that damage was material only.

While various sources reported that the damage was material only, Step News Agency posted about “the sound of ambulances in several neighborhoods in Aleppo and news of casualties and casualties in the ranks of the regime and its militias as a result of the Israeli raids that touched the vicinity of Aleppo airport just before.” Syrian Observatory gave specific information that “at least 7 of the Iranian forces and their loyal militias have been killed, as a result of Israeli strikes against ammunition depots of the Iranian forces and their loyal militias, in Sheikh Najjar Industrial Area on the outskirts of Aleppo city, and the death toll may rise because there are some injured people.”

Jerusalem Post gave information that “according to the Syrian Human Rights Center, ten people died and the city of Aleppo in Syria is in chaos due to the “Israeli strike,” Maariv initially reported. The report is in contrast to official Syrian media reports that suggest Syrian air defenses defended the area.”

The Times of Israel reported that “Acting Foreign Minister Israel Katz on Thursday appeared to confirm that Israeli warplanes struck Iranian military targets outside the northern Syrian city of Aleppo overnight. In an interview with Israel Radio, Katz said that “as far as Iran knows, it’s Israel” that carried out the strike targeting a weapons depot, and went on to say that it was a “challenging” operation to perform.”

Aljazeera added that “the blasts caused an electrical blackout in Aleppo, the country’s second-largest city and a major industrial hub that bore the brunt of years of fighting and heavy Russian and Syrian aerial bombardment on its former rebel-held areas. Other attacks hit the vicinity of al-Nairab military airport on the outskirts of Aleppo in the second such attack on the installation used by Iranian troops in less than a year.”

The incident occured around midnight.

Airwars assessment

Between two and three civilians, including up to three woman, were killed and between three and eight others, including a child, were wounded in alleged Israeli artillery shelling and/or airstrikes on the Al Amal neighborhood in Khan Yunis on May 12, 2021.

Initial reports from @Alaqsavoice_Brk stated that “a martyr rose in Khan Yunis from the bombing of an apartment in the Al-Amal neighborhood in Khan Yunis”. Later reports from @SafaPs added that “the body of a second female martyr was pulled out from the bombed house of the Arafa family in the Al-Amal neighborhood, west of Khan Yunis governorate, in the southern Gaza Strip” and @AlGhadTV additionally reported “the body of a third martyr was recovered in the bombing of a house in Al-Amal”.

A tweet from @alkofiyatv named Hadeel Arafa as being killed in the strikes and noted that her body “arrived at Nasser Hospital after she was pulled out from under the rubble”. According to a post by Khan Younus Today, Hadeel was planning her wedding to be held after Eid and had planned out all of the details, including the dress she was going to wear. Thehir Hussein added on Facebook that she had just gotten engaged two weeks ago. Hadeel was killed alongside her mother, Miami Arafa.

Al Mezan included details that “at 2:30pm on the same day, Israeli air forces fired multiple missiles onto a 125-square-meter four-story house owned by Mahmoud Arafah and located in the Al-Amal neighborhood in Khan Younis. The attack led to the death of Miami Abdallah Mousa Arafah, 49, and her daughter Hadeel Khaled Mahmoud Arafah, 28. Three other residents of the house, one of them a child, were injured, while the house and nearby buildings were significantly damaged.”

Al Jazeera reported that “Bayan AbuSultan, 25, said her cousin Hadeel Arafa, 27, and her 50-year-old aunt, Miami, a mother of four, were killed while preparing for Eid in their house in the Amal neighbourhood”.

According to Al Jazeera, at the time of the strikes, “there was no prior warning of an imminent strike as Miami’s brother was on a call with her a few minutes before the bombing. AbuSultan said that she and Hadeel had been planning to go shopping together after Ramadan as she was supposed to get married a few days after Eid al-Fitr. The last that she had heard from her cousin was when she shared her Facebook status, praying for those killed. “Little did she know that soon after we’ll be wishing her exactly the same,” AbuSultan said. “I shiver every time I think of how terrified they were. I hope they didn’t feel anything.”

@ShehabAgency also identified “injuries by Israeli shelling targeted an apartment in Al-Amal neighborhood” and later added that “8 injuries were transported from the scene”.

Sources were conflicted as to whether the damage was inflicted by artillery shells or airstrikes. However, all of the sources that attributed responsibility for the incident blamed Israel.

An IDF statement on 12th May stated: “A short while ago, the IDF struck an additional Hamas internal security apparatus building, in Khan Yunis, used for counterintelligence.” It is unclear at this time if this event was included in this statement.

The incident occured in the afternoon.

Airwars assessment

A civilian was killed and up to 16 others injured in Israeli strikes targeting two houses in Gaza’s Al Bureij refugee camp, multiple sources reported.

The civilian killed was identified as Mahmoud Muhammad Ismail Al-Khalidi. Two sources said he was passing by the house of Ayman Nofal when it was hit by at least four missiles, while Al Haq said he was inside the house. The Times of Israel, citing Al Araby TV, described Nofal as commander of the Al-Qassam Brigades, which is Hamas’ armed wing. Fateh movement posted a memorial for Mahmoud but did not identify whether he was a member of any organizations.

B’Tselem provided testimony from Ahmad Khaled, 21, Mahmoud’s brother: “On Friday, 14 May 2021, around midday, I was at home. Our building has two apartments. One is mine and in the other, my parents live with my brother Mahmoud and his wife, who’s five months pregnant, and their daughter Ahlam, who’s a year and a half old. At around 1:30 P.M., Mahmoud came back from the bakery at the entrance to a-Nuseirat Refugee Camp where he’d been working for the last year. He wanted to have lunch quickly, so he could buy groceries at the market before he had to get back to work. A few minutes after he went out, I heard fighter jets bomb the camp. The sound was terrifying and very loud. The neighbors said the strike was aimed at the home of Ayman Nofal, who’s a Hamas operative, and at the home of the ‘Issa family, whose sons also belong to Hamas. I went outside immediately, because Ayman’s house is very close to ours. I saw that the house was in ruins. There were many civilians there searching for wounded people under the rubble. I joined them and we got several wounded people out, including an unconscious baby, an elderly man who had been injured in the head, a woman who was injured in her hands and face, and a guy who was injured in the chest. They were carried to Palestinian Red Crescent ambulances, except for one guy who was evacuated in a civilian car. I went back home. About two hours passed and my brother Mahmoud still hadn’t come back. We started worrying about him and I called the bakery where he worked, but they told me he hadn’t returned. At the same time, we heard on the news that there was an unidentified martyr from al-Bureij Refugee Camp at a-Shuhada al-Aqsa Hospital. I went with my uncle Khalil, 62, and his two sons, Isma’il and Zeid, to the hospital and we asked to see the body. When they opened the refrigerator, I saw a body that was completely mutilated, especially around the head and face. I looked at his pants and checked the left hand, because one of Mahmoud’s fingers was cut off at the tip. Then I recognized it was my brother. I blacked out and didn’t know what was going on around me. I woke up at home, surrounded by some of my friends. We later found out that the rescue teams had located Mahmoud while I was searching for wounded people under the rubble. They found him inside warehouses under a nearby house, about six meters away from the house that had been bombed. He’d probably been passing by the house as the missile hit it and was blown away by the force of the blast. The warehouse doors were completely destroyed. We buried my brother the next day, in the cemetery of al-Bureij Refugee Camp. His hobby was hand wrestling and he was a large, strong man. He’d been into bodybuilding since he was 14 and worked out regularly. Mahmoud provided for my parents. My father used to work as a driver, but a few years ago he got sick and stopped working. Mahmoud worked every spare moment to support the family. He didn’t belong to any faction or political organization.”

Al Mezan Centre for Human Rights and the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights also reported 15 injuries as a result of this, including four women and two children, which the latter said were minor to medium. Al Haq put the number of injuries at lower; it reported ten injured civilians, but included the same number of women and children who it said had been in a neighbouring house at the time of the strike.

A further injury was reported by a single source as result of an airstrike on the second house. This house reportedly belong to Marwan Issa, and was hit in the same camp five minutes after, according to the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights. He has been described as the deputy commander of Al-Qassam. This incident is also recorded here due to the close time and location proximity.

The Israeli military has not confirmed reports of airstrikes targeting Ayman Nofal or Marwan Issa. The reporting around this event does not indicate that either men were killed.

Nearby houses also reportedly sustained damage.

The incident occured at 13:40:00 local time.

The victims were named as:

27 years old male Sources put him at either 27 or 28 years old killed

Airwars assessment

Two people were reported injured in a strike on the Al-Jinnah neighbourhood of Rafah in the Southern Gaza Strip, in the early hours of May 16th 2021.

Various news outlets – including Al Kolfiya, SND Palestine, @News__Online – reported two injured in the Israeli strike on Awni Duhair Street, one of which was serious. Some English-language reporting – including @DaysofPalestine – noted that the location of the strike was a house on George Street in Rafah’s Al-Jinnah neighbourhood, with one source indicating that the house belonged to the Abdel-Al family.

Ahmad Abdel-Al, to whom the house may have belonged, has been designated as a Hamas military operative by the IDF. The IDF admitted to striking his house in the Rafah area on this date: “the home of Ahmad’ Abd al-‘al in Rafah, a leader in smuggling and holding a Hamas military portfolio, [was] attacked.” There is no evidence that Ahmad Abdel-Al was himself a casualty.

A single source – Omar Ashkar, who purportedly lives in Rafah –  contested both the strike and the reports of civilian casualties, denying that there had been any targeting of Awni Duhair Street. In addition, those sources reporting the strike differed on the mode of delivery, with Al Kolfiya describing it as a reconnaissance missile, and Days of Palestine noting the use of drones, but both identifying Israel.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Airwars assessment

A young girl between 9 and 12 years old, Dima Saad Asaliya, was reportedly killed in an alleged Israeli missile strike on Al Sikka street in Shasha neighbourhood of Gaza on May 19 2021. Another five other civilians were also reportedly injured in the attack.

Dima Asaliya’s father, Sa’ad Asaliya, a taxi driver in northern Gaza, posted an image of his daughter on Facebook after the incident. He told local sources that he had seen the missile hit the area from where he was standing on the roof of his building. He called an ambulance immediately, and only discovered the body of his daughter after the dust had cleared. Mr. Asalyia commented to Wafa news outlet: “What did my child do to make a missile turn her into pieces? Didn’t the occupying country, which possesses the technology, recognize that she is a child?”.

B’Tselem also collected testimony from Dima’s father: On Wednesday, 19 May 2021, at around 8:00 P.M., my daughter Dima, 10, went to her sister Irina’s, 26, to get a baking pot. My wife was making pita bread and needed the pot. Irina’s house is 50 meters away from ours. I was standing on the roof and saw Dima coming back with the pot. Just then, there was a loud explosion behind our house. I thought the missile had hit farmland about 20 meters away. There was a huge ball of dust and fire, and the force of the blast knocked me down. I didn’t think for a moment that the plane had struck my little girl. I immediately called the Civil Defense services and told them there’d been a bombing by my house and there might be people wounded or dead. I looked out at the main street to give them instructions where to go to, and then I saw a body lying on the ground. I still didn’t understand who it was. I told the ambulance driver that there was a body down below and asked him to wait a moment so I could climb down from the roof and check who it was. I went down and walked towards the body. Then I found it was my daughter Dima. I saw her lying dead, motionless. Meanwhile, my brothers and neighbors arrived, but I got to her first. I was in shock. I stood there and didn’t know what to do. I picked her up, but still didn’t know what to do. My brother Sa’id took her, put her in my brother Fathi’s car and drove her to hospital. After he drove off, I went inside to evacuate my family, because I was afraid there would be another bombing. Meanwhile, the ambulance arrived, but there were no more dead or wounded so he drove away. My brother Sa’id called me from the Indonesian Hospital in northern Gaza and told me that Dima had arrived at the hospital lifeless and that she was dead. I started crying and screaming and reciting verses from the Quran. Why did they hit Dima? She was just a young girl holding a pot. It’s a horrifying crime against an innocent girl. Dima was my life and the flower of the house. She was the youngest. My home has become dark. Every child who comes into the house reminds me of Dima. Everyone loved her, family, neighbors, friends.”

Andalou Agency reported on the event after interviewing Dima’s father: “The little girl, “Dima Asaliya”, took a short way to her married sister’s house, to borrow a small electric oven, which her mother requested, so that she could cook bread before the power cut. The 11-year-old girl, Dima, went on her way to her sister’s house, which is only 50 meters away from her house, and in the middle is an empty plot of land. It was only moments until the Israeli fighters launched a missile at the empty plot of land, leaving it stained with blood.”

In her home, east of Jabalia refugee camp, in the northern Gaza Strip, a tent of sadness covered the sky, where everyone was shocked by the horror of what had happened.”

Sa’ad Asalyia described his daughter to Andalou Agency as the “angel of the house”. Speaking to the New York Times, Asalyia wondered if Israeli soldiers mistook the electric oven Dima was carrying for a weapon: “Maybe their alarms went off because of the stove… but did they not see how small she was?”.

According to a tweet from @same76335451, the victims of the strikes were taken to the Indonesian Hospital for treatment.

Sources described the weapon used as a missile launched from a weaponised Israeli reconnaissance drone. The incident took place the day before a ceasefire was agreed.

The incident occured at 20:05:00 local time.

The victims were named as:

10 years old female killed

Airwars assessment

On October 9th 2023, between five and eight civilians, including up to three children and four women, were reportedly killed and several others injured when Israeli forces allegedly struck the home of the Abu Al-Omrain family in Al-Qarara in southern Gaza. According to available reports, the bombing destroyed the home and caused significant damage to nearby buildings.

Detailing these events, the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR) stated, “At approximately 2:00 a.m. on the same day, and without prior warning, Israeli warplanes bombed a two-storey house belonging to the Abu Al-Omrain family, located in the town of Al-Qarara, northeast of Khan Yunis, which resulted in its complete destruction on top of its occupants.” Elaborating further on the damage caused by the bombing, the PCHR reported, “A serious damage to a number of neighboring houses. (5) martyrs were recovered, including (2) two women and two girls. Civil defense crews are still searching for missing persons and victims under the rubble.” This conforms with an account offered by the Al Mezan Center for Human Rights. Both organizations reported that the bodies of five people had initially been recovered from the destroyed home, and that further work was carried out to locate additional missing persons.

According to available reports, this incident resulted in numerous injuries. While no outlet has provided a number of those who were wounded, SHMS News Agency has stated that alongside those killed, “several others were injured.” Hani Abu Mura provided the highest casualty toll of eight members of the family killed on Facebook.

On October 9, a Facebook user named Alaa Younis Abo Al Omarein who is a relative of those killed shared a post claiming to be a relative of those killed. They identified those who lost their lives as “My beloved mother, Hayat Khalil Al-Desouki, 67 years old,” “My dear aunt Howaida Khalil Al-Desouki, 60 years old,” “My beloved sister, Aya Younis Abu Al-Omrain, 29 years old,” “My brother Muhammad Younis Abu Al-Omrain, 39 years old,” “My brother’s wife, Ibtihal Khader Abu Al-Omarin, 33 years old,” “Hayat Muhammad Abu Al-Omrain, 12 years old,” “ Habiba Younis Abu Al-Omrain, 9 years old,” and “Younis Muhammad Abu Al-Omrain, 4 years old.” The family member Alaa Younis was interviewed by the Associated Press a few days later as she was staying in a UN school after her home was destroyed and eight members of her family were killed.

Cairo24 News reported that two of the women that died in the strike were Egyptian: Howaida Khalil Al-Desouki and her sister Hayat Khalil Al-Desouki, 67 years old. Howaida was a pension supervisor at the Educational Administration in Ain Shams in Cairo and was visiting her sister Hayat who was married 40 years ago to the Palestinian Younis Abu Al-Omrain, and has lived there since then. Ahmed Al-Sayyid Khalil Al-Desouki, a nephew of the two women, told Cairo24 that Mrs. Howaida Khalil Al-Desouki, his aunt, was visiting her sister Hayat Khalil Al-Desouki two weeks ago to offer her condolences to her husband, Younis Abu Al-Omrain, who died after suffering from illness.

@samahpal23 added that the victims were taken to Nasser Medical Complex. Following this incident, Radio Al Zaytouna shared four photographs on Facebook showing a destroyed building surrounded by rubble and debris.

Where possible, names have been matched with the Palestinian Ministry of Health list of fatalities in Gaza released on October 26th, 2023.

Where sources identified the belligerent, all sources attributed the strikes to Israeli forces. Multiple sources accused Israeli forces of using internationally banned phosphorus during airstrikes in Al-Qarara.

Due to the scale and urgency of Airwars’ assessment process, all images have been automatically uploaded to each assessment with the graphic filter applied to protect users. We have also included all images identified from the sources, which may also include any imagery of combatants.

The incident occured at approximately 2:00 am local time.
