Airwars assessment

Six to 17 civilians were reportedly killed and as many as hundreds more wounded in the villages of Ya’rob and al Sakhoura in the western Raqqa countryside. However sources were conflicted as to whether they died in a Coalition airstrike or artillery shelling by YPG forces.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the only source thus far, alleged that the Coalition was responsible for airstrikes, but reported that there was also shelling by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) which could have been responsible for the deaths also. Most sources blamed YPG shelling.

24Raqqa put the death toll at nine but said that hundreds more were wounded.

Madar Daily put the death toll as high as 17.

Airwars assessment

Multiple local sources reported that dozens of civilians were killed or injured as a result of heavy airstrikes in Shifa neighborhood, in West Mosul.

Yaqein said that the Coalition was responsible for the raids, and that they also led to the destruction of houses of civilians.

Sawlf Ateka and Mosul Ista (two local Facebook groups) said that a number of houses and buildings had been hit by airstrikes, targeting a booby-trapped caravan (containing a car bomb) near the Republican Hospital in Shifa neighbourhood.

A single local source reported to Yaqein Agency that five children and their mother were killed after Coalition airstrikes hit their house in Zanjili neighborhood in West Mosul.

The source had added that “heavy and continuous indiscriminate shelling makes the task of recovering the bodies and transporting the wounded very difficult, as well as [getting] the necessary medical supplies.”

Local sources said that more than 300 civilians were killed during two days of fighting in Zanjili and Shifa neighborhoods, in West Mosul. The loss of life was reportedly caused by ISIL shooting on fleeing civilians, as well as by airstrikes carried out by Iraqi Forces and the international Coalition.

Sawlf Ateka Facebook page quoted the Iraqi Observatory for Human Rights, which had reported that 250 civilians had died.

Eyewitnesses and a doctor from the Nineveh Department of Health told Al Araby News that “at least 300 civilians were killed in the past two days during the shelling on the city, and because of executions and ISIL snipers.” The doctor furthermore said that “the streets of Zanjili, Shifa and the Old City are scattered with bodies of civilians of different ages, and the medical teams have not been able to pull them [from the streets] so far, because of continued fighting and shelling and because the army leadership prevented the entry of medical teams and civil defense to recover the bodies of the victims.”

The news site also cited local media who were accompanying the Iraqi security forces in the battle of Mosul. They had reported that US aircraft had launched missiles containing toxic white phosphorous in the bombing of Shifa. A military spokesman of the Joint Operations Command, however, denied the use of White Phosphorous.

Sources had also told Yaqein that “dozens of bodies were scattered around as they [civilians] had tried to flee the Zanjili neighborhood of Mosul, while bags with their belongings were spread on the street on the way out of the neighborhood.” Yaqein spoke of more than 100 bodies.

In a later report, Alaraby spoke to a doctor, who reported over 30 bodies had arrived at the hospital he works at, and dozens of others in various field hospitals. He said some of the bodies had been hit by gunfire from a close distance. Others had died from shrapnel as a result of “Iraqi” bombing and artillery shelling, according to the newspaper.

Survivors had told the doctor that dozens of bodies were still under the rubble of destroyed houses. “One of the survivors who managed to escape spoke of the presence of seven members of her family under the rubble of her demolished house in Zanjili district.”

Journalists around the World and Enlib posted drone images on Facebook showing the aftermath of the destruction in the neighbourhood.

Naqa Al Yasimin said on Facebook that Mullah Walid Khaled was among the dead. He used to be the owner of a famous shop, called Tarshi Smak. Moreover, a local citizen, Yasin Mahmood, posted a handwritten list on Facebook with the names of 106 civilians that were reported wounded in Zanjili.

Airwars assessment

An August 2017 Amnesty International report documented a civilian casualty incident in Raqqa, in which 9 members of the same family were killed on June 8th, 2017. The neighbour of the family had told the organization’s field researchers that in the early evening, Abdallah Allawi, his wife Muntaha, and their seven sons, aged between three and 18, were killed when their home was shelled and destroyed.

Amnesty mentioned that the house could have been targeted by either air or artillery strikes. The interviewed neighbour had stated that the family’s house had been hit by an airstrike, but this was based on the presumption that only an air bombardment could have completely destroyed the building.

Airwars researchers have so far identified no known public allegations of civilian casualties with the same first or last names.

An entire family of six civilians – including three women and two girls – was killed in alleged Coalition air or artillery strikes or possible SDF mortar fire in the Qasir al Banat area in the south-east of Raqqa city, local sources reported.

On the 15/6-17, the French MoD reported: "In the past week, France reports his 31 sorties, 28 of which were Armed Reconnaissance or Ground Support (CAS) and 3 were intelligence gathering. Two strikes were conducted by French planes in Iraq and Syria, one in the west of Raqqah city, and the other in the Al Qaim region, both against ISIL fighters. Task Force Wagram carried out 80 artillery strikes in Mosul."

Airwars assessment

Four civilians, including one woman, died and two more were wounded in artillery strikes on Raqqa’s Al Badu neighbourhood, according to local media.

All sources said that ‘heavy artillery strikes were responsible. Sharqiya Voice blamed “YPG militia”, while Orient reported that “the Syrian Democratic Forces committed a new massacre”. However, only the Coalition was using artillery on the city.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

For June 14th-15th, the Coalition reported: “Near Raqqah, 11 strikes engaged eight ISIS tactical units; destroyed nine fighting positions, three ISIS boats, and a vehicle; and suppressed an ISIS tactical unit.”

For June 15th-16th the Coalition reported: “Near Raqqah, 20 strikes engaged 14 ISIS tactical units and a sniper and destroyed nine fighting positions, four vehicles, three mortar systems, two supply caches, two ISIS headquarters, a heavy machine gun, and a home-made explosives factory.” It also additionally reported that “On June 15, near Raqqah, Syria, six strikes destroyed eight fighting positions, an ISIS headquarters, and a tunnel, and suppressed two snipers.” And that “On June 15, near Raqqah, Syria, one strike destroyed six fighting positions, five ISIS staging areas, two command and control nodes, an ISIS headquarters, and a supply cache, and damaged 10 fighting positions and two VBIED facilities.”

For June 14th-20th, 19 strikes were made by French aircraft in Iraq and Syria. Most of them were carried out during the Battle of Mosul, in support of the Iraqi fighters engaged in the fighting to drive ISIL out of its positions in the North of the Medina. The other strikes were carried out in support of the fighting for the capture of Raqqah, and against flows of arms and fighters in Iraq and Syria.

Thursday 15 June – A Reaper destroyed a terrorist vehicle in eastern Syria. Typhoons struck three targets in Raqqa, while Tornados and Typhoons hit a mortar near Tal Afar and six targets in Mosul…The following day [June 15th], a Reaper remotely piloted aircraft conducted armed reconnaissance in eastern Syria, some 35 miles north-east of Dayr az Zawr, and used a Hellfire missile to destroy a terrorist truck. Two Typhoons also struck three Daesh positions in Raqqa in support of the offensive by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
