Airwars assessment

A civilian woman was killed and at least two other civilians were injured by Russian shelling in the city of Zolochiv on April 25, 2022. The woman, born in 1949, was widely reported to have been killed in the middle of a local street by a blast. Local leader, Viktor Kovalenko confirmed that another woman born in 1960 suffered injuries to a leg and her chest while a man born in 1950 was reported to have been injured by a fragment hit to the stomach.

Suspline media updated this assessment at 10:22pm due a statement by the head of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, Oleg Synigubov, who stated that four in total had been wounded in the village as a result of the shelling. However, no details have been shared of the further two civilians wounded by the attack.

While early reports by Helsinki.org.ua claimed four private homes had been damaged by the shelling, this was updated by the Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office Facebook page to eight “residential buildings”. A pre-trial investigation into the violation of the laws and customs of war, combined with premeditated murder (Part 2 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine) by the SBU management in Kharkiv region found Russian servicemen to have carried out the shelling of the village.

This shelling was part of a wider attack which affected the neighbouring villages of Slatyne and Bezruky after their liberation by Ukrainian forces.

This assessment has reference to ACLED code UKR56546.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Airwars assessment

Three civilians, a woman and two men, local to the village of Bezruky were reported to have been killed and a further individual injured as a result of shelling allegedly by Russian service personnel on April 25, 2022. Villagers in conversation with Suspline News confirmed these casualties occurred around noon in light of shelling that had begun at 6 in the morning and continued until at least 4pm the same day.

It is unclear if the civilians were killed by the impact of the shelling or, as reported by @ICTV_fakly, by the fires caused by the attacks. An image posted by Suspline News which may detail the scene of the deaths details a collapsed building due to the shelling. The roof appears to have been completely demolished with debris littering the street outside; the building is part of a row of storefronts.

Local community chairman to Dergachiv, Vyacheslav Zadorenko, described the day’s events as “In the city of Dergachi and almost all settlements, they [Russian military] beat artillery, hailstones and mortars. Almost all over the community there are destroyed houses, they are burning now”. Widely reported by sources such as Hromadske news, TSN.ua, and Rayon the Russian forces had additionally hit gas pipes, leaving homes and businesses within 2500 yards of the impact without gas.

This assessment has reference to ACLED code UKR56477.

The incident occured around midday.

Airwars assessment

Two male civilians were killed in the village of Slatyno, Kharkiv Region by shelling in an attack suspected to have been carried out by Russian service personnel on a residential building in the early afternoon. Images shared online by the Ukrainian Independent Information Agency show a single story house to have been collapsed and destroyed by the shelling with fragments of the building littered across the surrounding land. No further information is known about the two men killed in this shelling at this time.

Though Russia has not claimed responsibility for the shelling, the attack has been widely reported by local twitter sources such as @black_cerber and @verkhovna_rada alongside news organisations including Interfax and LB as of Russian origin. As a result, the Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office launched a pre-trial investigation into the violation of the laws and customs of war combined with premeditated murder, represented by Part 2, Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. This investigation was conducted by the local SBU Office.

The attack came at the same as Ukranian forces had claimed Slatyno and the neighbouring villages of Bezruky and Prudyanka as “liberated” from Russian occupation. During this time however, Mayor Zadorenko of the Derhachi District noted that there had been non-stop shelling of civilian objects.
