Airwars assessment

Local sources reported that up to 200 civilians were killed and dozens wounded after airstrikes hit their houses in Zanjili neighbourhood (West Mosul) at dawn.

Omar Al Halbusi said on Facebook that the victims were mostly women and children, and that their bodies were still under the rubble.

@NinevehIraq reported on Twitter that Mohammed Bassil Tamimi Abu Yusuf was killed in the raids on Zanjili. He was married and had three children. The same was reported by a friend, Noble Al Ubeidy, who said that Mohammed had died as a result of shelling on his house.

Yaqein Agency said that both the Iraqi army and the international Coalition had bombed the area heavily, and said the counting of the victims was difficult due to the intensity of fighting and the ongoing shelling.

@Othmanmhmmadr said on Twitter that “horific testimonies come from Mosul”. He said “bodies are everywhere” and spoke of “a large massacre”.

Abu Alaa Wael Saimeh reported that as many as 200 civilians died, blaming the Iraqi government and the Coalition – the US in particular. This number was also mentioned by Alaraby news.

Alaraby spoke with an officer in the Iraqi army, who said that is unclear whether the strikes were carried out by the Iraqi government or the International Coalition. But “it is certain that dozens of houses in the neighbourhood were destroyed to the ground” and “the estimates speak of at least 200 victims, and these may be low estimates compared to reality.” He went on to say that “the streets of Al-Jadeed, Al-Naseem and the old school are filled with smoke, and a number of houses have been leveled.”

A member of the Mosul District, Mohammed Hassan, told the newspaper that the aircraft had chosen for this strategy after the army was unable to make progress and advance in the neighbourhood, resulting in “hysterical bombing”.

It furthermore reported that it saw hundreds of residents leaving the neighborhood after the air strikes, including dozens of wounded. They had left “through the corridors identified by the Iraqi Federal Police, which had announced that through loudspeakers after the bombing, which took several hours.”

A survivor told the newspaper “that he had buried his wife and then went out, while another [survivor] said that the people in the alley where they all lived had died because of the bombing. Residents who came out of the neighborhood seemed to be experiencing signs of extreme hunger and severe injuries.”

The newspaper concluded by saying that journalists had not been allowed to enter the area. Those that were given access, did so “with the requirement not to bring cameras, or even smart phones, into the neighborhood, indicating the commission of major crimes within the neighborhood.”

At least two civilians died when the Coalition allegedly struck their vehicle as they attempted to escape from Raqqa towards Hitteen Farms, according to local media.

According to Syrian Mirror, “The aircraft of the International Alliance launched air raids on the neighborhoods of the city of Raqqa, which is under the control of the state organisation [IS], one of which targeted a car carrying the civilian family of Bassam Al-Khattab out of the city, resulting in the deaths of all of them.”

The Smart News Agency said “activists reported that a whole family was killed by a possible coalition raid on their car while attempting to flee the city.” The Syrian Network for Human Rights was alone in reporting that the incident occurred on June 4th.

Airwars assessment

An August 2017 Amnesty International report documented the death of 27-year-old Kuteiba, who was killed in the Dir’iya neighbourhood in Raqqa city on June 9th.

Intissar, who had already told Amnesty researchers about the killing of her father the day before (see above), stated that her brother was killed “in the street near the mosque in our neighbourhood. He was going around telling neighbours that the Daesh checkpoints had gone and so there was an opportunity to escape.”

The report stated that several strikes, both air and artillery, hit the area on June 8th and 9th.

Airwars researchers have so far identified no known public allegations of civilian casualties related to this incident.

Local sources reported that a civilian male was killed in an alleged Coalition airstrike on ISIL members which killed three of its fighters in Al Mayadinn, Deir Ezzor.

The victim, Mubarak Khader al Shweiti, was reportedly driving near Al Tayba roundabout when the alleged strike targeted a nearby car carrying the ISIL members, killing all three.

The man was said to have worked as a driver for Al Bassam Forwarding Office, according to Euphrates Post which also obtained a picture of the deceased.

Three separate sources alleged that the Coalition was responsible for the airstrike.

For June 14th-20th, 19 strikes were made by French aircraft in Iraq and Syria. Most of them were carried out during the Battle of Mosul, in support of the Iraqi fighters engaged in the fighting to drive ISIL out of its positions in the North of the Medina. The other strikes were carried out in support of the fighting for the capture of Raqqah, and against flows of arms and fighters in Iraq and Syria.

Thursday 15 June – A Reaper destroyed a terrorist vehicle in eastern Syria. Typhoons struck three targets in Raqqa, while Tornados and Typhoons hit a mortar near Tal Afar and six targets in Mosul…The following day [June 15th], a Reaper remotely piloted aircraft conducted armed reconnaissance in eastern Syria, some 35 miles north-east of Dayr az Zawr, and used a Hellfire missile to destroy a terrorist truck. Two Typhoons also struck three Daesh positions in Raqqa in support of the offensive by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

Locals reported the deaths of 35 civilians during fighting for control of the Farouk area of Old Mosul.

Yaqein blamed the deaths on the assaulters, citing an Iraqi commander: “‘Our military operations in the Old City resulted in the killing of 32 people,’ the commander of the federal police, Raed Jawdat, told a news briefing.”

Iraqi Spring Media Center, citing agency reports, posted that 35 civilians had died as the result of a government attack on Farouk.

For June 18th-19th: “Near Mosul, four strikes engaged three ISIS tactical units; destroyed 30 fighting positions, five medium machine guns, three mortar systems, two supply caches, and a rocket-propelled grenade system; damaged six ISIS supply routes and a tunnel; and suppressed two ISIS tactical units.” It was additionally reported that “On June 18, near Mosul, Iraq, two strikes engaged an ISIS tactical unit; destroyed 30 vehicles, two fighting positions, a rocket-propelled grenade system, and a medium machine gun; and damaged 18 ISIS supply routes.”

Airwars assessment

At least two civilian males were killed and six others were injured in alleged Coalition airstrikes on Al Soussa in the east of Deir Ezzor governorate, a number of local sources reported.

Some sources reported that as many as six people died while JP News alleged that 15 people were killed. However, they were the minority among a large number of reports from the incident. Two male victims were identified by name and another six injured were identified.

From the 12 sources that reported the incident, 11 alleged that the Coalition was responsible.

For June 24th-25th, the Coalition reported: “Near Dayr Az Zawr, six strikes engaged three ISIS tactical units and destroyed three ISIS-held buildings, two command and control nodes, an ISIS staging area, a mortar system, a tactical vehicle, and an ISIS oil refinery.“

For June 25th-26th, “Near Dayr Az Zawr, three strikes destroyed six ISIS oil storage tanks, four ISIS pump jacks and two ISIS facilities.” It additionally reported that “On June 25, near Dayr az Zawr, one strike destroyed an ISIS-held building.“
