Airwars assessment

In a second alleged Coalition event in Mosul for the day, between 7 and 13 civilians reportedly died with 35 or more injured, after the Tamatim food distribution building was hit in the city.

NRN, which published graphic photos, reported the fall of more than 48 civilians in the bombing by the Coalition in Mosul. NRN’s reporter says the morning Coalition strike hit a number of restaurants and commercial markets in the cultural area. He said the target appeared to be an office building used by Daesh, but the bombing was pretty violent. Around six rockets led to the collapse of some buildings and shops nearby. The Iraqi Spring Media Centre placed the death toll lower, at seven.

One of the victims has been named as a young girl, whose father and brother were reportedly injured. Another name published as a young man who killed in the same event.

In the second of their March 2020 civilian casualty reports, the US-led Coalition assessed reports that they were responsible for civilian harm in this strike as “non-credible”, stating that no Coalition actions were conducted in the geographical area at that time.

Five civilians were reported killed in an alleged Coalition strikes in the Lylan area south of Kirkuk.

The Baghdad Post cited a local source as saying that an air strike carried out by international coalition aircraft near the village of Lylan killed five civilians. Iraq Amsi said the strikes took place in the evening.

Shelling killed and wounded civilians in eastern Mosul, according to local sources.

Iraq News Center reported shelling from both ISIL and government forces affected civilians in eastern Mosul. Zyaad Al Senjary posted that the mutual bombardment had resulted in a massive number of casualties among civilians.

Rudaw TV meanwhile reported that ten civilians were killed, including a mother and her four kids in the exchange of shelling.

@othmanmhmmadr named one of the dead in Mosul who was identified as a professor of electrical engineering at the University of Mosul. The report blamed Coalition raids for his death.

Airwars assessment

More than 40 civilians were reported killed or injured due to shelling inside Mosul.

Naynawaalghad TV cited what it said were medical sources in Mosul, who told the outlet that 41 civilians were killed or wounded as a result of artillery fire from an unknown source. The outlet noted that residents were forced to bury victims in a public park, as the cemetery was full.

Yaqein reported that more than 40 civilians were killed or wounded on Saturday night, and blamed the government or Coalition. ISIL-linked al A’Amaq posted a video showing rubble and rescue workers. It included a shot of what is purported to be a bomb fragment left at the scene, on which English lettering can be seen.

In an emailed response to a report submitted by Airwars on this and other incidents in December 2016, Coalition officials requested additional information concerning the alleged event.

Airwars assessment

Local sources and relatives of victims said that Coalition airstrikes targeted a family house in Muthanna neighborhood northeast of Mosul. The raids reportedly killed a named civilian (53) with his mother (81) who could not leave her house due to her sickness while the son refused to abandon her.

Alaraby named Omar Abdel-Hamid al-Hamdani and his mother. Hamdani’s wife told Alaraby: “We wanted to go out, but his mother failed to move, my husband tried but the weight was too heavy, she did not leave her room for nearly two years. And we tried to seek help from neighbors, but everyone was preoccupied with himself and his family.” Rescue teams reportedly found the two at dawn on Tuesday, in the ruins of the house where “Hamdani was hugging his mother, aged 81 years, in one of the rooms.”

According to an Iraqi security officer quoted in the account, “planes bombed areas where armed activity [took place] in order to pave the way for the Iraqi forces.”

A local source said that a child was killed and his parents were injured in Coalition airstrikes on Farouk neighbourhood at the right side of Mosul.

A government source told Yaqein that a four-year-old boy was killed and his parents seriously injured after an explosive missile was dropped from an aircraft near the al-Farouk neighbourhood, west of Mosul. The source had added that one could see “a clear movement of the aircraft, heading towards the neighborhoods east of Mosul.” The same report was published by Iraq News.

Local sources said that a number of civilians were killed or injured, mostly children and women, when airstrikes struck the Shula kindergarten in Mansour neighborhood, at the right side of Mosul.

According to press sources, the warplanes had targeted an ISIL headquarters. None of the sources identified the warplanes.

Wadi Hajar (Facebook) posted a photo of a young girl (see below), saying that she and her father, as well as all of their family members, died in the airstrikes on Al Mansour. In a second post it showed a photo of a young man, stating that Mohammed Jadou was among the victims.

In what may be a related incident, Amnesty field assessors noted the following: “On 4 March, in the afternoon, another house in our al-Mousour apartments neighbourhood was destroyed by mortars. There was a car bomb in front of the house, and the ISF tried to hit the car bomb. There was a huge explosion. The attack killed three people. Two people were buried under the rubble, and we couldn’t dig them out. My cousin, XXXX – 45 years old – died from a piece of shrapnel in his back. We buried him in the garden. The grave is still there.”

Airwars assessment

Local residents and press sources said that a family of seven was killed after an airstrike hit their house in Dur-al Resala neighbourhood, West Mosul.

Hani Abu Obeida was named by @n_iraq67 as one of the victims. It was reported that his son Musab was the only survivor. The rest of the family reportedly died.

Only one source said it was the work of the Coalition. Other sources did not specify who carried out the raids.
